Trump-- Already Making America Less Safe With His Adderall-Fueled Twitter Feuds
Wednesday, Mexico's president, Enrique Peña Nieto, announced he was thinking about canceling his meeting with Señor el Presidente Trumpanzee in Washington next week, as a matter of Mexican national pride. Within hours, Thursday morning, he tweeted that he canceled the meeting with the deranged, Adderall-addicted orange orangoutang. Trumpanzee, a pathological liar unable to control himself even at this high a level, claims the idea to cancel the meeting was his own since Peña Nieto was once again refusing to pay for Trump's foolish and absurd wall. Chet Raymo, "Soul"
"Soul" by Chet Raymo "There is a moment early in Stefan Zweig's "The Post Office Girl" when the eponymous heroine has a moment of illumination: "In this instant, shaken to her very depths, this ecstatic human being has a first inkling that the soul is made of stuff so mysteriously elastic that a single event can make it big enough to contain the infinite." Two interesting thoughts here. First, that the soul is elastic. This is a rather different notion of the human soul than the one I was raised with. We were taught that the soul- the essential self- is created fully formed at the... more »

WAS STEVE BANNON'S LITTLE TEMPER TANTRUM AIMED AT THE MEDIA -- OR AT WHITE HOUSE RIVALS?
It's easy to take Steve Bannon's "The media should be embarrassed and humiliated and keep its mouth shut" hissyfit at face value -- i.e., as a dominance challenge on behalf of his boss -- but this bit of shameless flackery by Mike Allen at Axios suggests that something else is going on: White House and Hill GOP leaders are astonished by the unambiguous, far-reaching power of Steve Bannon and policy guru Stephen Miller over, well, just about everything. * They wrote the Inaugural speech and set in fast motion a series of moves to cement Trump as an America-first Nationalist. *They... more »

Mental illness is a terrible thing. It robs people of their ability to do good things in the world. Is it possible that our new president is some species of mentally ill? Student visas don't guarantee permanent residence
*The self-confidence of illegal immigrants and visa holders is sometimes over the edge* Trump is changing the U.S. immigration policies which the victorious half of the voters considered too dangerous for the American safety and its job market. Trump has stopped issuing new visas for the citizens of Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen at least for a month but maybe much longer than that. It will be investigated whether the system may be reformed to be appropriately improved. Also, he wants to build a 10-meter precast [concrete] wall on the Mexican border within "mon... more »
#SoFar
It looks as if #DespiteBrexit might be about to be displaced by #SoFar. This tweet from the BBC's Norman Smith, for example, comes from deep inside the #SoFar camp: As did Kamal Ahmed's report on last night's BBC One *News at Ten*. Yes, the economic news has been good and the experts confounded *but* there's still what Kamal called "the shadow of Brexit". And, spoken with a dying fall, his report ended with these ominous words: The nation of shoppers forges on. Britain's growth last year was the highest of any of the major Western economies. Trump To Launch "Major Investigation Into Voter Fraud"
Hello suckers!! It took the media mere minutes to rise to Trump's bait. Notice he did not just issue an executive order here. He stated the basic claim regarding voter fraud which was well reported and even bragged about by democrats during the election. Thus the media gets to raise the controversy as if there is no problem and then tries to blame Trump for getting it wrong. This immediately allows Trump to announce a major investigation and the inevitable cleaning house and tightened laws. Just to clear the air folks. Not my doing at all. The bad news is in all the in... more »

A Horrific Crime Runs Rampant in Cambodia. Is Foreign Aid to Blame?
A perverse exercise in losing sight of the objective by going along to preserve what appears as positive cash flow. There must also be a serious lack of internal cultural rejection as well. Solving this does mean disturbing the present situation and finding a way to bridge the real transition. It should be obvious that universal education and factory building will turn it all around and rather quickly as well. Right now the nation is been shunned instead. .. . *A Horrific Crime Runs Rampant in Cambodia. Is Foreign Aid to Blame?* * Pradyot Sharma * * Tuesday, January 17,... more »
Labor Flexibility Beats Unemployment
This is well worth reading and its adds wonderfully to my own thought experiments regarding the creation of a natural bid point for the labor market that would integrate well with the system described here. Having a standby bid for labor consisting of a four hour shift of light duty paying sufficient to allow bed and board as a given community standard would massively improve overall economic efficiency as idle hands are no longer wasted. Otherwise this set of protocols are far closer to a superior system than any other i have seen. . *Labor Flexibility Beats Unemployment: A Cl... more »
How David Ricardo Became Wealthy and Wise
This is an excellent item that captures the early historic emergence of fiat currency and controversy surrounding it. Yet that innovation allowed Britain to underwrite the whole conflict for thirty plus years. This also naturally inspired an industrial expansion as well. SmallSat revolution: Tiny satellites poised to make big contributions to essential science

Tiny CubeSats are ready to be our eyes in the skies. Earth Background: NASA; HARP Spacecraft: SDL; Montage: Martins, UMBC, CC BY-ND Tiny satellites, some smaller than a shoe box, are currently orbiting around 200 miles above Earth, collecting data about our planet and the universe. It’s not just their small stature but also their accompanying smaller cost that sets them apart from the bigger commercial satellites that beam phone calls and GPS signals around the world, for instance. These SmallSats are poised to change the way we do science from space. Their cheaper price tag means w... more »

This is Why China Deployed Nuclear Missiles Near The Russian Border (Hint: To Target The U.S.)
*Stratfor*: *How Far China's Nuclear Capabilities Stretch* China has had a nuclear missile capable of reaching the United States since the early 1980s, the Dongfeng-5, but it has issues that have recently limited its effectiveness as a deterrent. Its liquid fuel propellant means that it must undergo a lengthy fueling process before it can be launched, and its lack of mobility renders its silos vulnerable to strikes by increasingly accurate munitions. Those threats to its survivability reduce its value as a minimum credible deterrence. China needed to upgrade to a more survivable ... more »

About 2,100 light-years away and 3 light-years across, NGC 1579 is, like the Trifid, a study in contrasting blue and red colors, with dark dust lanes prominent in the nebula's central regions. In both, dust reflects starlight to produce beautiful blue reflection nebulae. But unlike the Trifid, in NGC 1579 the reddish glow is not emission from clouds of glowing hydrogen gas excited by ultraviolet light from a nearby hot star. Instead, the... more »

2017 isn't '1984' – it's stranger than Orwell imagined

A week after President Donald Trump’s inauguration, George Orwell’s “1984” is the best-selling book on Amazon.com. The hearts of a thousand English teachers must be warmed as people flock to a novel published in 1949 for ways to think about their present moment. Orwell set his story in Oceania, one of three blocs or mega-states fighting over the globe in 1984. There has been a nuclear exchange, and the blocs seem to have agreed to perpetual conventional war, probably because constant warfare serves their shared interests in domestic control. Oceania demands total subservience. I... more »
