“What's happening to this spiral galaxy? Just a few hundred million years ago, NGC 2936, the upper of the two large galaxies shown, was likely a normal spiral galaxy- spinning, creating stars- and minding its own business. But then it got too close to the massive elliptical galaxy NGC 2937 below and took a dive. Dubbed the Porpoise Galaxy for its iconic shape, NGC 2936 is not only being deflected but also being distorted by the close gravitational interaction. Don't Be Surprised That The Resistance Is Musical Too-- Green Day, Moby, Arcade Fire, Gorillaz...
I haven't really kept up with the music business since retiring from Reprise. But I'm still a music fan and I was excited, about a month before the election, to hear the new Green Day album, *Revolution Radio*. The first single was the anti-gun nut song, Bang Bang and when they performed it at the American Music Awards a couple weeks after Trump won the election, Billie Joe inserted the lyric/chant, "No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA." The response was electric and downloads went crazy immediately. It's a funny thing about downloads... after the first single on an album comes out,... more »

"Memory, Meanings, Moments and Madness: Wanderers In No Man's Land" by Chris Floyd "Zachary Mason's remarkable novel, "The Lost Books of the Odyssey," is based on a grain of fact. Before the stories of the Iliad and the Odyssey were crystallized and canonized in the books of Homer sometime in the 8th century B.C., various (and often conflicting) tales of the Trojan War and its heroes had floated around in various forms for hundreds of years. Some of these variants survive in fragments of other ancient works, like ghostly echoes of alternative universes. Mason's intriguing fictional c... more »

Why I Demonstrated Today at My State Capitol
I demonstrated today against the Trump presidency, but not because I think Russians stole the election on his behalf. I don't believe the Russians stole the election. Rather, I think Trump was the Archie Bunker candidate for many Americans. His populist promises resonated with white, middle-America, but I think its clear from his political appointments that Trump's allegiances are to Wall Street, especially Goldman Sachs. Jan. 21: No. I didn't watch Trump's inauguration.
There was no need to. Some years ago, I saw a video of Hitler's inauguration. Why repeat myself? Is it an exaggeration to compare Trump to Hitler? No. Hitler rose to power on fear and anger, and he focussed it on Jews, Gypsies, gays. There's nothing new in Trump except for his willingness to talk to Russia. But I suspect the kind of talk he has in mind won't help in the long run. American business has very little time to establish the world dominance it has been seeking for over a century. But fighting both Russia and China at the same time is not really a very practical idea. Ente... more »

All Hail The Gaslighter-in-Chief
Thursday night-- in a bizarre Adderall-fueled rant-- Señor Trumpanzee falsely claimed his inaugural concert was the biggest success in history. Unprecedented. People wondered if he was drunk. There were about 10,000 people. Obama's inaugural concert had drawn 400,000. Trump's a compulsive liar. PolitiFact has fact checked 358 controversial statements of his. Only 15 (4%) were rated true, although another 40 (11%) were rated "mostly true." Everything else-- basically 85% of what he's said to the public is a lie. Do it! Do it! Do it!
Last night's *Newsnight *was probably my personal lowlight of yesterday's Trump inauguration coverage. Even Katty Kay's often snide and biased presentation of the Inauguration coverage and Nick Bryant's loaded reports betrayed BBC bias less than this edition of *Newsnight*. Yes, it interviewed two Trump supporters (Michelle Malkin and Walid Phares) but... How many problems were fixed by the inauguration?
First, off-topic. Google Maps have finally adopted the short name "Czechia" as the primary country name on their maps. The frequency of usage of "Czechia" has tripled since early 2016 but it's still a factor of 50 below the "Czech Republic". I am not dreaming about the *eradication* of the term "The Czech Republic". I just want many people with common sense to understand that it's so much meaningful to use a standardized official short name when it makes sense – e.g. on the maps where the room is often insufficient. Former President Obama famously suggested in a 2016 interview that he questioned a set of orthodox assumptions about American foreign policy that he labeled “the Washington Playbook.” That orthodoxy, widely accepted among American political elites since 1945, includes an unending national commitment to employ America’s financial resources and military forces in opposition to any challenges to global peace and stability. The dominant assumption has been that America’s broader, enlightened self-interest is best served by a system where peace rules and free trade flourishes. Obama ... more »

Data should smash the biological myth of promiscuous males and sexually coy females

Victorian mores influenced ideas not just about men and women but animals too. Joseph Christian Leyendecker, CC BY That males are naturally promiscuous while females are coy and choosy is a widely held belief. Even many scientists – including some biologists, psychologists and anthropologists – tout this notion when interviewed by the media about almost any aspect of male-female differences, including in human beings. In fact, certain human behaviors such as rape, marital infidelity and some forms of domestic abuse have been portrayed as adaptive traits that evolved because males ar... more »
