*Missing the mountains of Pingtung.* On Sunday afternoon I dropped by the Taichung Thinkers Corner to listen to Freddy Lim and Hung Tz-yung, sister of the Corporal Hung whose death at the hands of his military masters provoked massive protests in Taipei, speak about their new political party, the New Power (時代力量) Party. The 15 Most Miserable Economies In The World
*Bloomberg:* *The 15 Most Miserable Economies in the World* *Consumers in Venezuela are expected to suffer the most in 2015Inflation is a disease that can wreck a society, Milton Friedman, the late Nobel laureate economist, once said. That affliction this year will be most acute in Venezuela, Argentina, South Africa, Ukraine and Greece — the five most painful economies in which to live and work, according to Bloomberg survey data that ... more »
Is somebody finally doing something about the horror that is Monday?

Ground Water Contamination Rising at Daiichi

"What Life Requires..."
“Life does not require us to be consistent, cruel, patient, helpful, angry, rational, thoughtless, loving, rash, open-minded, neurotic, careful, rigid, tolerant, wasteful, rich, downtrodden, gentle, sick, considerate, funny, stupid, healthy, greedy, beautiful, lazy, responsive, foolish, sharing, pressured, intimate, hedonistic, industrious, manipulative, insightful, capricious, wise, selfish, kind or sacrificed. Life does, however, require us to live with the consequences of our choices.” - Richard Bach, "Running From Safety"
Stephen Levine, “Half Life”
*“Half Life”* "We walk through half our life as if it were a fever dream, barely touching the ground, our eyes half open, our heart half closed. Not half knowing who we are, we watch the ghost of us drift from room to room, through friends and lovers never quite as real as advertised. Not saying half we mean or meaning half we say, we dream ourselves from birth to birth seeking some true self. Until the fever breaks and the heart can not abide a moment longer as the rest of us awakens, summoned from the dream, not half caring for anything but love." ~ Stephen Levine

Would The Republicans Really Run Presidential Candidates Who Aren't Natural Born Citizens?

Second place was more interesting-- Koch puppet and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker came in with 21.4%. Third place went to Ted Cruz-- CPAC is his kind of crowd and he should have done a *lot* better than the 11.5% he took. But, then again,... more »

How Modern Money Production Worsens Income Inequality
*Guest post by **Jörg Guido Hülsmann* [image: Bridging the gap]The starting point for any serious reflection on the subject of money production is the fact that the creation of new money does not bring about uniform and simultaneous changes. An increasing money supply tends to entail a higher money price level1, but the individual prices change at different points of time and each to a different extent (i.e., Cantillon effects). As a consequence, money production creates winners and losers. The winners are those who can use the new money first, because at this point in time the ... more »

The closing words of tonight's *Panorama *were "Love at the heart of politics can only make for a better democracy". They were spoken, perhaps inevitably, by Fergal Keane. There was sad music and hopeful music. And love. Lots of love. Plus Fergal cooing over a baby (belonging to a struggling single mum, naturally). And then more love. If Netanyahu Speaks Before Congress, He Will Likely Win Reelection in Israel
*Manufactured image, but speaks the truth (source)* *by Gaius Publius* Howie has been covering the upcoming (perhaps) Netanyahu speech before Congress in light of (1) the relationship between Israel and the U.S., (2) the relationship between people like billionaires Sheldon Adelson and Haim Saban and our two political parties, and (3) the relationship between the Netanyahu speech and the upcoming (for sure) Israeli general election. Of Adelson, for example, Howie quotes Uri Avnery in Counterpunch saying this (my emphasis throughout): Who is the ruler of Israel? Prime Minister ... more »

The whole of BBC News today is about Mohammed Emwazi. Everyone who ever came into contact with him since the day he was born has been interviewed on the television. He was quiet and hard-working you know (apart from the occasional paroxism when walking past the house of a Jew.) The BBC is mystified. It's trying to get to the bottom of where and how the studious young man was radicalised. Along the new trail, built by no one I knew, acorns had fallen by thousands, more than enough to leave creatures dazed by too much fortune. Conkers have tumbled among them, each experimentally chipped and then rejected by some set of tiny teeth. Hazel nuts were better, it seems. Should an adder pass en route to denning, amid this rich mast, amid this late fall of goldened leaves of ash and beech, I might merely step aside, unalarmed as any fattened squirrel. Across the pasture, I remember, past the partly shaded ferns, cowslips, bluebells, buttercups of spring and summer, where f... more »

Violence Down In Iraq In February 2015
There was a short spike in violence in December 2014 and January 2015, which ended in February. Both attacks and casualties went down last month to the lowest levels since May 2014 despite major operations by the Islamic State in Anbar, Ninewa and Salahaddin. This was part of a larger trend, which has seen security slowly improve across Iraq since the summer. The press reported 655 security incidents in February 2015. That was lower than January’s 815 and December’s 689. For a short period it looked like the Islamic State was ramping up operations for another major push in the ne... more »

Two First Amendment Rights, Only One Protected: Last Man Standing (Sort Of) Gets It Right
One of my guilty pleasures is watching Tim Allen's show Last Man Standing. Guilty because, unlike the very apolitical Home Improvement, Tim Allen uses his new vehicle to take some slaps at President Obama and liberals in general. Just How Furious Is The US Surveillance State At Russia Over Ed Snowden's Asylum?
Early in the third season of *House of Cards*, Russian President Victor Petrov has the Russian security police arrest American gay rights activist Michael Corrigan in Moscow, which causes a disturbance in U.S. domestic politics (and international relations). It would have been far more complex for Beau Willimon to write Ed Snowden's sojourn to Russia into the series instead. The numbers of nuclear safety events involving nuclear propulsion, rose from a total of 57 in the year 2012-2013 to 99 in the last year available 2013-2014 . Faslane is the base for the UK’s nuclear deterrent Trident submarine fleet on the Clyde, close to Scotland’s main centres of population. Read more
Britain is becoming a friend who can't be trusted, says top US general
[image: General Raymond Odierno]Ever since the Cold War ended more than two decades ago, America has never entertained any serious doubts about Britain’s ability to fulfil its commitment as a vital military ally when tackling threats to the Western alliance. Until now. For the dramatic cuts to Britain’s defence budget implemented since the Coalition took power in 2010 have led to a number of senior US military officers and politicians openly questioning whether, when it comes to fighting the wars of the future, Britain has the capability to be an effective ally on the battlefield. ... more »
Japan sub talks well advanced before glitches ended deal
[image: Soryu class SSK]For several months last year, the federal government single-mindedly pursued a plan, driven largely from Tony Abbott’s office, to buy the navy’s new submarines from Japan. The Australian has been told that process reached the point where media releases were prepared but were never sent out. Senior Defence officials made a number of trips to Japan to discuss the possibility of Australia buying a fleet of submarines evolved from Japan’s successful Soryu-class boats. Read more
Chinese Submarines Not As Good As Ours, Says US Navy Official; Expresses Concerns Over South China Sea Activities
[image: Ohio class SSBN]China’s aggressive expansion of its submarine fleet has been commented upon by a U.S defence expert. Vice Admiral Joseph Mulloy, deputy chief of naval operations for capabilities and resources, told the House Armed Services Committee on sea power that China has been expanding the number and geographic areas of operation for its submarines. However, from a quality point of view they are not at par with the U.S submarines. Mulloy said China is building some “fairly amazing submarines” and has more diesel and nuclear-powered vessels than the United States. Howe... more »

All this leads to the neocortex managing the emotional machinery as a matter of course. It is proven to be difficult but totally necessary. Heart of Earth's Inner Core Revealed
[image: Earth layers graphic] This is interesting and adds a little new information to tease us. However, i do want to say something. This is very preliminary, but i no longer wish to discount the possibility of physically sinking a shaft using gravity control tools and exotic heat management. I still do not know how, but i do know that the possibility can no longer be discounted with our initial discoveries regarding the nature of gravity. The key is the simple removal of gravitational influence a short distance into the rock itself. This allows the rock to popcorn... more »
Who 'Parked' the Moon in Perfect Circular Orbit Around Earth?
This outlines all that is clearly unnatural about our moon and includes the fact that the moon is apparently hollow. They even found metals in the rocks that are not explainable at all. Right now the most convincing explanation is that the moon was hollowed out to make a space habitat and that this object then was moved into an appropriate Earth orbit. That makes all the oddities and coincidences totally plausible. The same argument obviously supports similar building programs on most other planets and moons. Local gravity can be controlled at will in order to make such s... more »

A prime example is the word 'communism'. Most people (including most journalists and politicians) have no idea what the word means. To them, its evil. That's it. To them, Stalin was a communist.
