Toxins are everywhere ... in body care products, foods, clothing, new cars, and even water. They float in the air, settle in the earth, and pollute the environment in countless ways. They also harm us! Did you know that BPA (used in food packaging) has been linked to heart disease? Triclosan, a common ingredient in anti-bacterial products, is causing increased rates of allergies. C8, the stuff in Teflon, is being linked to all kinds of medical problems including cancer, thyroid disease, and high cholesterol. *“A Life Sentence”* by Chet Raymo “’We each only really speak one sentence in our lifetime. That sentence begins with your first words, toddling around the kitchen, and ends with your last words… in a nursing home, the night-duty attendant vaguely on hand.” Where did that come from? A review by David Kirby of poet Mary Ruefle's new book, quoting Ruefle on a thought that Ezra Pound learned from Ernest Fenollosa... "I Pity You..."

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 31 minutes ago
"Said a philosopher to a street sweeper, “I pity you. Yours is a hard and dirty task.” And the street sweeper said, “Thank you, sir. But tell me, what is your task?” And the philosopher answered saying, “I study man's mind, his deeds and his desires.” Then the street sweeper went on with his sweeping and said with a smile, “I pity you too.” - Kahlil Gibran

"Fate..."

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 43 minutes ago
“Sooner or later, fate puts us together with all the people, one by one, who show us what we could, and shouldn’t, let ourselves become. Sooner or later we meet the drunkard, the waster, the betrayer, the ruthless mind, and the hate-filled heart. But fate loads the dice, of course, because we usually find ourselves loving or pitying almost all of those people. And it’s impossible to despise someone you honestly pity, and to shun someone you truly love.” - Gregory David Roberts, “Shantaram”

Do the American people, and the people of Europe, want and support a US-NATO war with Russia?

When President Obama says "We tortured some folks," Hickman provides at least three cases -- in addition to many others we know about from secret sites around the world -- in which the statement needs to be modified to "We murdered some folks." Of course, murder is supposed to be acceptable in war (and in whatever you call what Obama does with drones) while torture is supposed to be, or used to be, a scandal. An earlier post may have unintentionally misled you into thinking that most Twitter comments about Nicola Sturgeon's interview with Andrew Marr this morning were about the ever-burning issue of BBC bias. They were not. They mainly focused on Miss Sturgeon's split skirt and legs. Some swooned, some complained about being put off their breakfasts, but all were united in the belief that the First Minister of Scotland's frock was *the* thing to tweet about. And quite a lot of them were women. [One for Dame Jenni Murray, methinks.] I thought I'd share that with you in the interests of... more »

As *The Andrew Marr Show *neared its close, the programme cut briefly (as it always does) to the presenter of the following programme: Nicky Campbell, flamboyantly rapping his notepad while waiting to preview today's *The Big Questions*. And then came the 'big question': "Is the time coming to lay the Holocaust to rest?" It took a few seconds to recover from the shock of hearing such a distasteful-sounding question in the wake of recent events, but Nicky went on to say, thankfully, that the programme would discuss the Holocaust, hear from survivors "and keep the memories alive".... more »

The proposal was a fairly modest advance on the current ceasefire, calling for both sides to withdraw heavy artillery away from combat areas, and into areas where they wouldn’t be so conveniently used. I have gotten into the habit now of using Saturdays as my "down time" and to spend the day on catching up on personal and family matters.... I had a load of different articles prepared to post yesterday, but instead I figured that I would cover the material in my Sunday rant.... So here it goes...... more »

"Poorly-phrased questions"

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 14 hours ago
Just to amplify a point made earlier in the week at *BBC Watch*... Tim Willcox isn't the only BBC presenter to give the impression of holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the State of Israel whilst interviewing a Jewish woman on the subject of anti-Semitism in Western Europe. BBC Radio 2's Jeremy Vine showed that such thinking (far from being merely a matter 'poor phrasing' during an interview) appears to be shared by others at the BBC. Journalist Angela Epstein was describing the fears of Jewish people in Western Europe. She was saying that Jews are targets of Mu... more »

And talking about checking things and avoiding confirmation bias... I saw some comments early this year on one of Owen Bennett-Jones's "right-wing, media-monitoring blogs" noting that Labour's election agenda was being heavily promoted (that day) by the *Today *programme, the BBC News website,* BBC Breakfast,* and the like. A few commenters went on to make the claim that this was likely to keep on happening right up till the general election in May. So I thought I'd start checking it out by finding something easy to monitor and then focusing on it for a while. Would it bear out th... more »

The electrification of Earth and Thorium

Charles Barton at The Nuclear Green Revolution - 15 hours ago
I have been looking at the ThorCon business plan. It is hugely ambitious. Their goalo appears to be nothing less than the electrification of the planet with molten salt technology by 2050 or so. This hugely ambitious goal would not be possible to reach without building thorium cycle breeders or one to one converters. The benefits would be enormous, but as this discussion has identified, there are risks. There are perhaps worse risks if we don't stop global warming, and deal with the massive scale of human poverty that exists today.

The Incremental Dictatorship

Rural at Democracy Under Fire - 16 hours ago
*A guest post by Pamela Mac Neil* In order for a government to be all powerful, it must dominate all of the major democratic institutions in a society and it must be very adept, when seeking to change the democratic nature of these institutions, at hiding its inner workings while making that change. The Harper government is a fundamentally anti-democratic entity that caters to the agenda of the corporate elite. The decisions that shape all aspects of Canada's democratic institutions are made largely in private behind closed doors. Underlying the rise of Harpers authoritarian state is... more »

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 16 hours ago
The BBC's favourite defence against charges of bias - that it gets complaints from all sides, so must be getting it about right - has always been based on a dubious premise. It assumes that the complaints from each side are of equal validity - or, from the BBC's perspective, equal invalidity. It doesn't help that so many accusations of BBC bias *are* invalid (for whatever reason). Look into most of them and they simply fall to pieces. The world of Twitter is particularly rife with invalid assertions of bias. Just look at this morning's Twitter coverage of the Nicola Sturgeon inte... more »

Neo-Liberalism: The Undying Monster

Two sides to every story

In assessing whether the BBC is especially biased it's often a useful exercise to compare its coverage of stories with those of other broadcasters. Taking the latest UKIP story then, do we see any substantial difference between the way the BBC News website is reporting the story and the way Sky News is covering it? You can judge for yourselves by reading the two articles (copied and pasted below the 'Read more' fold). My take is that the Sky article is a remarkably balanced piece, giving almost equal numbers of paragraphs to UKIP and the Conservatives' side of the row. The BBC ... more »

The empirical evidence continues to stack up and create a seriously useful picture of ayahausca therapy. Best though is that it appears to the mind to take control over the damaged brain sufficiently to counter the problems themselves well enough to allow successful functioning fro the victim. In many cases a physical cure may not be possible but the mind is able to do work arounds that dampen the negative effects. We really cannot expect a better result short of high risk surgical intervention. All this is extremely promising and the sooner science gets serious about this and ... more »

No, I'm not exaggerating. And Canada is not the only democracy that is dead. Let's take a look at it's last breath. When Britain declared war in 1914, under the law of time Canada was at war, too. That is not as dramatic as it might sound because while the law required Canada to be officially at war, it did not require Canada to take any part in that war. In fact, it was a pretty good deal for Canada, but not so hot for Britain. Canada did not have to go to the help of Britain but - if Canada were attacked, Britain automatically was required to go to war for the defence of Canada. ... more »
