Michael Snyder Why would the government want to punish people that are just trying to work hard, become more self-sufficient and take care of their families? Beware of multiple measures
I predict there will be lots of discussion about testing in connection with "rewriting" the federal education law. And some of this will be a call for multiple measures, which seems to be a step in the right direction, especially when proponents mention seemingly reasonable assessments, eg student feedback, classroom observations. Watch out: Anthony Cody points out that these measures are considered valid by the Gates Foundation only if they correlate with higher test scores (chapters 2 and 3, The Educator and the Oligarch, 2014, Garn Press).

At that point, all the European nations went off the gold standard because they didn't have enough gold to fight the war. Under the gold standard, gold was money. So you had to pay for things with gold. You couldn't have big trade deficits with other countries because you'd have to pay with your gold. Graphs at a glance: 22 million eligible voters didn't vote in 2010, twice the number of Tory voters. Who has the guts to rouse this army of undead votes?
The main political parties try desperately to seduce supporters away from UKIP and the SNP. Famous politicians cover up their extensive blemishes, prepare their little speeches, and go out to campaign with all the insincerity of teenage Lotharios collecting kisses. They chase the national flags relentlessly. But they leave undisturbed a far larger untapped reservoir of votes: all the people

The Dirac roundtable
The latest Dirac medal went to string theorists Gabriele Veneziano, Ashoke Sen, and Andrew Strominger. See TRF, August 2014. This October 2014 roundtable with the winners was hosted by Atish Dabholkar, a physicist at the Abdus Salam Institute for Theoretical Physics. At the beginning, Veneziano is fighting the myth that he found his formula by randomly searching through mathematical books in the library. Just to be sure, this is no straw man. For example, go to 1:02:10 of the TV documentary with Brian Greene, The Elegant Universe, and you may check that it's routinely said that... more »

Mobile Phones Cause Cancer
[image: cancer] The problem continues to not receive proper attention. We have posted several times mostly voicing our disquiet. Today we all live in a sea of microwave radiation and this is clearly deleterious to our health and promotes cancer formation. More worrisome, closeness to microwave towers is a far more serious risk than expected. Worse than all that, it is almost impossible to know how close you happen to be and 300 meters is a huge radius. It tells me that in the city, we are all exposed far more than desirable. So even if you do not use a cell phone at all... more »
India’s Geographic Challenge
[image: west-bengal-india-map-205] It needs to be recalled that India has a land mass similar to Europe to the Urals. The maps fool you. for whatever reason India failed to develop effective nation states prior to the European consolidation under the British. Truth is, it was only in Europe that and truly only in England that a functioning Nation State emerged with a sorted out political system that was no longer dynastic. Both the USA and France was inspired by this rapidly evolving framework. England's unique system was then supported by a rapidly expanding mer... more »
The Disunited States: A French Writer Navigates 1930s United States
This snapshot from eighty years ago opens a door on the present. A nation and I mean all nations must promote a narrative on inclusiveness. The USA has been actually quite good at this, not least because they insist on the adoption of an idea of Americanism. The difficulty as always has been that every citizen feels a sense of alienation from such an ideal. This can come about because of economic advantage or lack thereof, ethnic or racial pride and a sense of misgovernance. This has been the agenda of all domestic politics for two centuries. A long stint of economic ... more »
Disrespecting professional judgment
Sent to the Washington Post, Jan 9 Several experts claim that without annual standardized testing, we don't know if students are progressing ("Education Secretary Arne Duncan to outline education priorities and defend testing," January 9.). They are telling us, in other words, that teacher evaluations of students mean nothing: We should value scores on a single test constructed by distant strangers more than the judgments of professionals who work with students every day. "A Look to the Heavens"
"Here lie familiar shapes in unfamiliar locations. On the left is an emission nebula cataloged as NGC 7000, famous partly because it resembles our fair planet's continent of North America. The emission region to the right of the North America Nebula is IC 5070, also known for its suggestive outlines as the Pelican Nebula. Separated by a dark cloud of obscuring dust, the two bright nebulae are about 1,500 light-years away.
