The Liberal Distaste for Steve Bannon
Trump's former right hand man has bothered the pages of *The Observer* again. In comments published last weekend, he praises Dominic Cummings as a skilled practitioner of the dark arts, endorses his coming assault on the civil service, and predicts Boris Johnson will go down the road of economic nationalism. In other words, what we're seeing in the UK is Bannonism without the grand poobah himself. But this post isn't really about Bannon, it's about why he is a bogeyman for the liberal and centrist sections of the establishment. Naturally, there are degrees of opposition and antipa... more »

Could The Navy Have Beat Japan Faster With World War II Battlecruisers?
*Robert Farley* *Security, Asia* The Dreadnought Revolution changed the equation. *Here's What You Need To Remember: *The USN prioritized slow, well-armored battleships that could operate together in a line-of-battle. Had the Navy paid more attention to European trends in shipbuilding, it might have gone ahead with the Lexington-class battlecruisers, which would have offered U.S. commanders in the Pacific better tools for fighting the war. Well, this is an interesting piece of research. A new paper in the *Journal of Experimental Psychology *suggests that overconfidence can be transmitted socially, that being around overconfident people rubs off on other folks.
