Forget Nuclear Weapons: These Big North Korean Guns Have Kept The U.S. Military At Bay
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, Asia* South Korea is in their sights. *Here's What You Need To Remember: *The presence of huge guns along the border underscores that a conflict between North and South Korea would involve a terrible cost in civilian lives. However, the threat posed by the Koksan needs to be kept in chilling perspective: the huge guns could inflict terrible suffering if turned on civilian targets, though not on the scale that Pyongyang boasts, due to limitations on range, logistics and the need to survive counterattack. The 1937 Battle of Shanghai: China's Alamo-Like Stand Against Japan
*Warfare History Network* *History, Asia* [image: Wikimedia Commons] The defense of Sihang Warehouse would rivet the attention of the world, with the American press quickly dubbing it “the Chinese Alamo.” On October 27, 1937, the Zhabei district of Shanghai began to burn, an enormous conflagration that stretched for five miles and filled the northern horizon from end to end, almost as far as the eye could see. The orange-yellow flames greedily consumed buildings and their contents, finishing the destruction already begun after three months of intense fighting between the Chinese... more »
A New 'SR-71' Spy Plane Could Soon Return To the Skies (At Hypersonic Speeds)
*Sebastien Roblin* *Technology, Americas* Lockheed is talking up a possible new Blackbird. *Key Point*: "Speed is the new stealth." Hypersonic weapons—those capable of flying over five times the speed of sound—are the hot new buzz word of defense industrial complexes across the globe. China, Russia and the United States have all vigorously and relatively openly pursued a diverse array of hypersonic weapons programs, adding fuel to the fire of a growing arms race. While long-range ballistic missiles could already attain hypersonic speeds, they travel in predictable arcs and can b... more »

Russia’s Su-57 Stealth Fighter Can Spoof Missiles
*David Axe* *Security, * Is that a big deal? *Key Point*: Unless Russia builds and deploys missile-spoofing in meaningful numbers, new defensive systems hardly matter. Russia’s stealthy Su-57 is the only fighter in the world that features a Directed Infrared Countermeasures system, or DIRCM. The presence of the missile-spoofing DIRCM turrets on the Su-57’s spine behind and underneath the cockpit point to a novel approach by Sukhoi designers to protect the fighter from infrared-guided missiles. It’s not clear it will work. But the DIRCM is the least of the Su-57’s problems. Co... more »
Douglas B-23 Bomber: The World War II Bomber That Barely Bombed
*Peter Suciu* *Security, Americas* [image: Wikimedia Commons] After the United States entered World War II in December 1941 the B-23 Dragon was relegated to use as a patrol aircraft on the west coast and later for training duties. In the late 1930s, the Douglas Aircraft Company developed a new bomber to address and even rectify the shortcomings of the unloved twin-engine B-18 Bolo Bomber. Initially, Douglas had proposed a number of modifications for the B-18, and the United States Army Air Corps saw the potential of an upgrade and this evolved into the Douglas B-23 Dragon. Police Use Violence On Protesters Against Police Violence
A group of protesters gathered again Wednesday evening at the Point Breeze home of Pittsburgh mayor Bill Peduto to protest the snatching of a protest marshal off the street over the weekend by heavily armed police officers in an unmarked white van. This was the second consecutive night of protests. On Tuesday evening, an even larger crowd showed up at Peduto’s front door and spent the night until they were ordered by Police to leave at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning. A different scene unfolded Wednesday evening though, as the group was met by Peduto sitting on his front porch, waiting ... more »

Dorothy Day Found Her Calling Fighting The 1918 Flu Pandemic
In 1917, having dropped out of college and moved to New York with her family, Dorothy Day took her first New York job, with a daily Socialist news paper, The Call, and settled into her own one-room apartment on Cherry Street. She was 19 years old and quickly overcome by the poverty she encountered and the smell of that poverty inside the tenements she frequented. At this point, she mentions, for the first time, in her major autobiography, “The Long Loneliness,” that she could feel “the spell of the long loneliness descend” on her. The report discusses findings in four key areas of investigation into deepened political repression of the uprising at the state and societal level: a surge in mass arrests and a significant rise in political imprisonments; an increase in arbitrary detentions and the militarization of streets; deaths caused by use of lethal force; and deaths caused by the ignition of racist violence an... more »

Dead Silence: Meet the Russian Akula-Class 'Stealth' Submarine
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, Eurasia* The Akula-class attack submarines continue to make up the larger part of Russia’s nuclear attack submarine force. *Key Point*: The Akula was nearly as stealthy as the U.S. Navy's Los Angeles class. The Soviet Union produced hot-rod submarines that could swim faster, take more damage, and dive deeper than their American counterparts—but the U.S. Navy remained fairly confident it had the Soviet submarines outmatched because they were all extremely noisy. Should the superpowers clash, the quieter American subs had better odds of detecting thei... more »

About 8 in 10 (79%) say they are angry about the way things are going in the country today, including a horrifying-- for GOP candidates-- 51% who say they are *very* angry. The core of Antifa's and BLM's problem is Marxism
Brandon Smith does a great job of putting fundamental reality into words, and summing it up concisely. He's just done that, IMHO, for Antifa and Black Lives Matter. Their fundamental issue isn't racism at all - it's Marxism, the ideology that informs and underpins all their efforts. Leftists in particular have always had a problem with competition and it stems from the Marxist roots of their philosophy. There is this notion among lefties that the world is supposed to be “equal”. Now, there are different types of equality, and I think the majority of Americans agree with the idea ... more »
DNC Finale: As Snug As a Bug On a Smug Repug Mug
The Democratic confab is finally dead and buried, save for the bounty of stale takeaways and sugary leftovers and touchy-feelies still being peddled by the party's corporate media propagandists. I want to know if those were real tears in Obama's eyes, designed to augment the long-perfected catch in the voice for the projection of performative sincerity. Or, whether the shiny moisture was really a drop of glycerin exp... more »
