How cutting speed limits could slow climate change

In this week's issue of our environment newsletter, we look at
how speed limits affect emissions and examine how many countries have
net-zero targets.
( Saskatchewan's minister of highways once asked me - a commercial traveler at the time years ago - for my thoughts on cutting speed limits. I mentioned that congestion would result from mandating longer periods of time on the roads, resulting in greater fatigue ( and shorter tempers ) , increased numbers of accidents, and more variation in speed coinciding with more scofflaws - less regard for the law. In short, the flow dynamics would suck. BTW The thrust in car design for years has been to achieve higher speeds with greater safety. Frankly, limiting emissions should already have been achieved with fuel efficiency targets: not that current practice of loading vehicles with breakable frippery looks sustainable from either an insurance affordability or maintenance viewpoint.)
