COVID-19: Myths And Reality About Weather And Seasonality
You've probably gotten a summer cold, perhaps even the flu, even though the weather is warm. SARS-CoV-2, the 2019 form of coronavirus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic, is in the same family as the common cold, so it is correct that heat will kill it, but just like colds and flu, weather is not a magic bullet. Some do believe that with summer heat social distancing means less but that isn't reliable. False confidence can have adversely shaped risk perception and put people you know in the .03 with devastating risk factors in greater jeopardy. read more

What's My Take On The Republican Convention
*WNU Editor*: This is Trump's Republican party. It is no longer the party of the Bush family, Romney, McCain, or anyone else. This was also the most diverse convention that I have ever seen. Democrat conventions included. This is definitely no longer the party of old white men behind closed doors. The best line that I liked was when Ivanka Trump's said that Washington DC did not change her father, her father has changed Washington. That is a line that I think all sides will agree upon.

Death by a thousand cuts
Others are rightly pointing out that we have a strong precedent as to what the Saskatchewan Party's version of austerity actually means, in the form of the disastrous 2017 budget which saw massive and cruel cuts made with no regard for their devastating impact on the province. But there's an even more instructive example as to the Moe government's cut-first mindset in its treatment of education funding this fall. Right now, parents across Saskatchewan are wrestling with questions as to how to handle the start of the school year. Our choices have been made far more difficult by the S... more »

Joe Biden endorsed China's involuntary abortion policy in 2011
For decades China had a one child rule. A woman who was pregnant with her second child was forced to have an abortion. The pro-choice movement in America didn't seem to have any problem with that since they were near universally silent about it. Joe Biden, pseudoCatholic, said the following at a Chinese University in 2011: "As I was talking with some of your leaders, you share a similar concern. You have no safety net. Your policy has been one which I fully understand — I'm not second-guessing — of one child per family," So Joe was cool with women being forced to kill their babies.... more »

Try As He Might
Erin O'Toole has won the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada. But, to achieve that victory, he tied his fortunes to the party's social conservatives. Alan Freeman writes: In the 2017 Tory leadership race, O’Toole ran as a moderate against a pretty right-wing roster of candidates. He came in third. Scheer won by hoovering up social conservative votes and capturing support in Quebec by promising to defend supply management for dairy farmers. Realizing that being a moderate wasn’t going to work in 2020 against the equally moderate MacKay, O’Toole took on a harsher, more be... more »

They only want us to think within the boundaries they define. The moment you start thinking for yourself- really thinking- so many things stop making any sense. And if you keep thinking, the whole world just falls apart. Nothing makes sense anymore. All rules, traditions, expectations- they all start looking so fake, so made up. Library books and Covid
Browsing the new rules and guidelines for OSU Libraries for the autumn semester 2020 I see there’s not a lot of agreement on how long the virus lives on books. The guidelines say a book will be quarantined for 5 days when returned to service. I’ve checked various websites, and at least in the recent (yet ever changing) rules and research nothing is that draconian. It will push faculty and students even more to on-line use. I know when I was employed there (retired in 2000) the library was absolutely dependent on our student staff; I assume it is still that way and they will have... more »

Sniper-Proof: Meet the Body Armor That Can Stop .50 Caliber Bullets
*Charlie Gao* *Security, * Would you trust it? *Key Point*: While .50 caliber resistant body armor exists, it’s impractical for the average infantryman. Heavy machine guns and sniper rifles in .50 caliber are some of the most feared weapons for the infantryman on the battlefield. As the .50 caliber round was originally meant to pierce armor and take down aircraft, a hit is practically guaranteed to incapacitate a soldier. Most body armor is useless against .50 caliber rounds, as they are only meant to protect against cartridges with less than 1/3 of the energy of the .50 caliber... more »

The Rational Mind Thrives On Irrationalities
Paradoxically, the people with a rational mode of thinking are often the believers in the most outrageous irrationalities. This is because the more rational people are, the more susceptible are they to the irrationalities which come packed in a language that might seem scholarly and profound.

The Zero Sum Game
I'm feeling a little dumb at the moment, because a light bulb just went on that should have gone on a while ago. I was having the same conversation I've had many times. "Charters and vouchers and public schools could absolutely coexist. There's no reason it has to be a zero sum game," said someone. And I agree, sort of. There are some things that can't help being zero sum, like having enough students to run certain programs. But financially, it's absolutely true that we don't have to make it a zero sum game. We don't have to be forced into the ridiculous attempt to finance multiple ... more »
