Once upon a time...in Iowa with Don Imus!
*MONDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2020Iowa caucuses explained:* Long ago and far away, Don Imus tried to explain the Iowa caucuses. It was January 2000. Candidate Gore had just vanquished Candidate Bradley in the Hawkeye State. Imus, who was huge at the time, had no earthly idea how the Iowa caucuses worked. Adhering to the rules of the game, he fell to belittling Gore. Leslie Stahl came on as a guest; she was clueless too. Our big stars have always been like this! This wholly inescapable fact helps explain how we got here. To enjoy our own award-winning consistency, you can just click here... more »
What's Worse-- Biden's Sincere Belief In Austerity Or Trump's Belief In Nothing But Personal Corruption?
Trump's a monster, no doubt about it. He's a grifter who has not an ounce of patriotism nor the will towards public service in his bloated orange body or his misshapen shriveled soul. That said, unlike Joe Biden, Trump is not driven-- the way his party is-- to destroy Social Security and Medicare. And it isn't just the Republican Party that is eager to destroy the social safety net; it is also the Republican wing of the Democratic Party, faction of the party that has largely rallied behind Biden, one of the worst pro-Austerity warriors in our lifetimes, worse on that count than Tr... more »

BREAKING: Why did black voter turnout decline?
*MONDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2020Princeton professor tries to explain in the New York Times:* Has the liberal intelligentsia ever been so unable to function? We've been seeing it in the heavily scripted Oscar commentary of the past few weeks. We've been seeing it in the remarkably unhelpful election punditry. Tomorrow, we'll return to full-time discussion of this existential dilemma. For today, consider what happened when the New York Times published the opinion column by the Princeton professor. The professor sought to explain a deeply puzzling point. She sought to explain the decline... more »
Plaza Suite
This weekend, I had the pleasure of seeing the revival of the Neil Simon play Plaza Suite, starring Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker. It is in Boston for a few weeks before heading to New York. The play, which is really three short plays in one, was terrific. Broderick was very good, as expected, though he stumbled over his lines occasionally (once causing him to ad-lib to recover, to great humorous effect). Parker was absolutely great. She was energetic and consistently funny. Highly recommended if you are in Boston over the next few weeks or in New York over the next fe... more »

Can Bloomberg buy the US presidency?
There's a very interesting analysis of election spending at Axios, titled "Bloomberg's big bet on the power of money". (Click the image below for a larger view.) Why it matters: Bloomberg is betting that enough exposure — through a $300m+ ad campaign and a non-traditional run that looks past the early four states — will make him competitive in Super Tuesday, and make all Democrats stronger in the general election. - He’s blowing through cash to create a parallel (or bigger) unofficial, uncoordinated party infrastructure in case the DNC can’t help the eventual Democratic... more »

*Berkeley Weeded Out Job Applicants Who Didn't Propose Specific Plans To Advance Diversity* The university's litmus test is a lawsuit waiting to happen. The University of California has been requiring prospective faculty members to affirm that they support diversity. This was Orwellian in its own right—reminiscent of the university system's 1950s loyalty oaths, which required faculty to attest that they were not members of the Communist Party. It now appears that at one campus, UC-Berkeley, the diversity initiative goes much further than previously understood. Whether a candidate... more »
