COVID-19: an update, and planning considerations

Peter at Bayou Renaissance Man - 16 hours ago
Last week I wrote about preparing for the economic impact of China's coronavirus epidemic. It now looks certain that it's going to cause major disruptions to world trade, and probably to the social fabric of many (perhaps most) countries - including the United States. COVID-19 is showing a very rapid infection rate, far faster than might be expected. South Korea went from zero reported cases to (at the time of writing) 1,146 infected and 11 dead in less than a week. Italy has gone from zero to 229 infected and 7 dead in a similar period. The USA now has 53 confirmed cases, inc... more »

Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent

Norma at Collecting My Thoughts - 16 hours ago
This morning at 6:30 I’ll go to our Lytham Road campus of UALC for the imposition of ashes. Merriam-Webster explains: Lent *“Lent* traces back to Old English with the meaning of "springtime." In the Christian church, the word refers to a period of spiritual preparation for Easter, a feast that commemorates Jesus' resurrection. In Western churches, it begins on Ash Wednesday, six and one half weeks before Easter, and is, traditionally, a time of penance and of a 40-day fast (excluding Sundays); the duration of the fast is patterned on Jesus' praying and fasting in the wilderness ... more »

Foolishly, McConnell Ramps Up The Republican Party's War On Women Again

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 16 hours ago
Why would McConnell get the GOP war against women rolling again, juts as the election season is moving into high gear? Who gained and who lost yesterday when he forced the Senate into a no-win situation with two abortion votes. McConnell's no fool and he knew there was no possibility the already-rejected bills would pass. So why move away from his strategy of no votes on policy, just on Trumpist confirmations of judges and other characters sent over by the Regime? Do the culture war bills to sharply restrict access to late-term abortions and threaten doctors who perform them with ... more »

Closed System Philosophy: The Village Idiot

Unknown at The Verma Report - 16 hours ago
A closed system is the ultimate village idiot philosophy because it exists in an environment that resembles a closed or isolated village. Since the village idiots have been brainwashed into believing that the world that lies outside their village is their intellectual enemy, they cannot venture out to learn new values and possibilities, or seek new allies for the cause of their own philosophy. Because of their self-imposed isolation, they develop an intolerant intellectual hierarchy which is obsessed with preserving their philosophy in its puritanical purity. This hierarchy demands ... more »

How the universe could possibly have more dimensions

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 19 hours ago
My key take home from my own work is that I can describe is all using only a 3D manifold to imagine the Space Time Pendulum which upon creation naturally creates TIME itself. We can nicely discard the mathematics of n dimension and rely solely upon 3D space. My published paper provides the 3rd and 4th order metric and by natural extension the n metric able to handle 2n vertices produced by n fundamental particles modeled by the Space Time Pendulum. String theory has to confront the problem in physics in which empirical infinity is a large number meaning that the inverse is not ... more »
