Art And Science In Venice
Last month the Museum of Natural History of Venice hosted, in the last room of the exhibit called "room of the cetaceans" (where a large skeleton of a whale hangs from the ceiling), an exhibit of artwork produced by high-school students from the Venice area. The event, which belongs to the "Art and Science across Italy" project, was the culminating point of a series of lectures on particle physics, on science in art, and related topics which involved the students and INFN personnel from the Padova section. read more
U.S. Says Russian Air Defenses Near The Libyan Capital Shot Down An Unarmed American Drone Last Month
*Reuters: **Exclusive: U.S. says drone shot down by Russian air defenses near Libyan capital* The U.S. military believes that an unarmed American drone reported lost near Libya’s capital last month was in fact shot down by Russian air defenses and it is demanding the return of the aircraft’s wreckage, U.S. Africa Command says. Such a shootdown would underscore Moscow’s increasingly muscular role in the energy-rich nation, where Russian mercenaries are reportedly intervening on behalf of east Libya-based commander Khalifa Haftar in Libya’s civil war. Haftar has sought to take the ... more »

"When confronted ... they ran towards it and saved lives. "Panem et Circenses"
*"Panem et Circenses"* by M.N. Long "Give them bread and circuses and they will never revolt…" so said Juvenal, reportedly. The transfer of wealth from workers and savers to governments and big banks continued this week with Swiss-like precision. The process is both mechanical and subtle. Here in the USA the automated elegance of this ongoing operation receives little attention. NFL football. EBT card acceptance at Del Taco. Adam Schiff’s impeachment extravaganza. You name it. Bread and circuses like these – and many others – offer the American populace countless opportunities for... more »
Nirvana Contest-- Pramila Jayapal
Our two favorite things about Seattle: grunge rock pioneers Nirvana and congressional progressive champion Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal. So, when former Nirvana manager Danny Goldberg offered Blue America a super-rare 1991 *Nevermind* Canadian gold record as a way to raise campaign funds for Pramila, we jumped at the chance. Pramila is probably best known as the co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and as the author of the 2019 Medicare-For-All bill and as a relentless advocate for humane immigration policies. She's been very different than most candidates in that she... more »

THE REAL NEWS IN THAT TRUMP SPEECH IS NOT THE ANTI-SEMITISM
This won't matter in the long run: US President Donald Trump told a pro-Israel conference Saturday night that some American Jews don’t love Israel enough. He also noting that he did not have to worry about getting his audience’s votes, because they would cast ballots with business interests in mind. Those comments, to the Israeli American Council advocacy group in Florida, drew quick criticism from opponents and were derided as anti-Semitic. How do I know it won't matter in the long run? Because this didn't: The comments were reminiscent of remarks he made in August when he said th... more »

The United States' New 'Ninja Missile' Chops Targets to Bits (We Have Questions)

While such strikes are typically carried out by drones and not so unusual, this particular strike used a new type of "ninja" missile. These missiles have been reportedly been used only a few times. Designed to minimize civilian casualties, the ninja missile is a specially modified Hellfire—without a warhead. On Vaiśeṣika Ontology
Kanada is regarded as the founder of the *Vaiśeṣika School* (one of the six Hindu schools of philosophy). His exact dates are unknown, but it is believed that he composed the *Vaiśeṣika Sutra* around 3rd century BCE. His focus was on the nature of reality, which he understood as *dharma*. In the Vedic tradition, the word “*dharma*” stands for the cosmic order as a whole. In this sense, all that is there in the universe is part of *dharma*. When there is a breakdown of the cosmic order, then there is “*adharma*,” which is a negation of *dharma*. The *Vaiśeṣika Sutra* opens with these... more »

There is a way to lead a political party after a defeat. Robin Sears writes that Tommy Douglas was a master of the art: Having lost more elections than any other contemporary political leader — 1962, 1963, 1965, 1968, and his own riding twice (!) — it is a little staggering to reflect that Tommy Douglas never endured a leadership challenge until 1971. His success was grounded in an evangelical skill at persuasion, but even more importantly, his ability to rebuild confidence and conviction even on a losing election night. His election night speeches became a cliché, but to hear him... more »

Sig Sauer's 516 AR-Style Rifle Is A Real Killer
*Charlie Gao* *Security, * We have the details. *Key Point:* The tendency for Sig Sauer to promote a new rifle every few years is probably disconcerting to potential users. When the HK released the HK416 in the early 2000s, it rapidly became a hit with elite military and police forces worldwide. Driven by a slick marketing campaign and favorable (albeit disputed) test results from the U.S. military, the HK416 represented a “better mousetrap” version of the AR-family of rifles for many users.
