Good news; Chinese defaults are rising rapidly

Scott Sumner at Econlib - 21 hours ago
No, this headline does not reflect any ill will toward the Chinese economy, rather I am celebrating a rare victory in the war on moral hazard. In the US, the problem of moral hazard seems to be growing worse over time. It began with FDIC insured bank deposits. Then the doctrine of “too-big-to-fail “was added. "Pandemonium"

*"Pandemonium"* by Jason Wiskerchen "The only thing nearly as enlightening as reading David Collum’s epic 'Year In Review' is listening to him and Chris Martenson riff about its highlights. Strap in, grab some eggnog, and listen to this year’s recap: "We are so close to a financial crisis now that we may be way, way past the fail-safe. We’ve got all these unfunded liabilities that we have to pay or face the consequences of - and they are fantastically enormous. The pensions are all underfunded - at the top of a financial asset price bubble, mind you. Social Security is a disaster. ... more »

Chet Raymo, "On Saying 'I Don't Know'"

CoyotePrime at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 21 hours ago
*"On Saying 'I Don't Know'"* by Chet Raymo “Johannes Kepler is best known for figuring out the laws of planetary motion. In 1610, he published a little book called “The Six-Cornered Snowflake” that asked an even more fundamental question: How do visible forms arise? He wrote: "There must be some definite reason why, whenever snow begins to fall, its initial formation is invariably in the shape of a six-pointed starlet. For if it happens by chance, why do they not fall just as well with five corners or with seven?" All around him Kepler saw beautiful shapes in nature: six-pointed s... more »

India's Arjun Tank Took Decades to Make. Why?

Kyle Mizokami at The National Interest - 21 hours ago
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, Asia* What was the issue? *Key point:* Russian state media has reported that India is interested in the Armata as the basis of a new, localized tank. In the mid-1970s, India began development on a totally new, advanced main battle tank that would satisfy the needs of the country’s Armored Corps. An impressive combination of firepower, armor protection and mobility, the tank was to be India’s first indigenously produced tank—and one of the best in the world. The service date for the tank, known as Arjun, was confidently set for 1985. Instead, the Arju... more »

Home Alone: With Donald Trump

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 21 hours ago
Home Alone is one of the typical Christmas films on TV – in Czechia but apparently also in Canada. Canada's leading TV channel CBC has censored a scene with Donald Trump in Home Alone 2. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The Trump derangement syndrome is a real thing. Trump has personally blamed Justin Trudeau for the censorship. The censorship was apparently motivated by some fanatical leftists' desire to hide the fact that Trump was pretty much a popular figure already in the 1990s. But CBC claims that someone made the edit already in 2014 and for apolitical reaso... more »

"Life, In Short..."

CoyotePrime at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 22 hours ago
"It is easy to overlook this thought that life just is. As humans we are inclined to feel that life must have a point. We have plans and aspirations and desires. We want to take constant advantage of the intoxicating existence we've been endowed with. But what's life to a lichen? Yet it's impulse to exist, to be, is every bit as strong as ours - arguably even stronger. If I were told that I had to spend decades being a furry growth on a rock in the woods, I believe I would lose the will to go on. Lichens don't. Like virtually all living things, they will suffer any hardship, endure... more »

The Air Force Chose The GAU-5A Rifle To Protect Its Downed Pilots For A Good Reason

Charlie Gao at The National Interest - 23 hours ago
*Charlie Gao* *Security, * The countries that use Glock 17s as standard sidearms are in the minority. *Key point: *Sidearms are practically inconsequential on the battlefield. Despite the near-ubiquity of the Glock 17 in police forces around the world, surprisingly few nations have adopted the Glock 17 as a standard sidearm for their military forces. On the surface, this may seem surprising: the Glock was first adopted in the early 1980s, at a time when many militaries were replacing their 1940s or 1950s vintage sidearms with modern, high capacity double stack 9mm.
