Hearing from a Russian citizen
I interviewed Tanya Bukharina yesterday on my public access TV show that has been playing on local stations across Maine for the past 16 years. Tanya is from Yalta, Crimea, Russia and we talked about the 2014 referendum where about 97% of voters said they wanted to leave Ukraine and return to Russia. (About 81% eligible citizens voted in the referendum.) I asked Tanya if Putin and Russia want to recreate the former Soviet Union and take over the world as the US and NATO have repeated claimed. She of course laughed at the suggestion and reminded me that when she took me around C... more »

OF COURSE THE KING OF "TRUTHFUL HYPERBOLE" WOULD EVENTUALLY LEAD THE "TRUTHFUL HYPERBOLE" PARTY
Here's a well-known quote from Donald Trump's first book, *The Art of the Deal*: The final key to the way I promote is bravado. I play to people’s fantasies. People may not always think big themselves, but they can still get very excited by those who do. That’s why a little hyperbole never hurts. People want to believe that something is the biggest and the greatest and the most spectacular. I call it truthful hyperbole. It’s an innocent form of exaggeration—and a very effective form of promotion. You could argue that if it's hyperbole, it's not truthful, and you'd be right, of cour... more »

Not a bad attitude towards money, IMHO
From Pearls Before Swine yesterday (click the image to be taken to a larger view at the comic's Web site): I approve. I've met a number of fairly wealthy people in my time, some during my business career, others as a pastor or chaplain. The one trait most of them had in common was that they didn't own their money . . . *their money owned them*. They spent so much time worrying about how to keep it, and how to make more, that they forgot to sit back, relax, and enjoy what they had. I don't *ever* want to be like that. Peter

Homocysteine, vitamin B and me
About eight years ago I examined the evidence (in recent articles at a level I could understand) that high levels of homocysteine (>15 micromole/L and the threshold is about 10-11) were linked with cognitive decline in the elderly and that supplements of B6, B12 and folate (folic acid) could slow the decline. Big Man, Small Brain
Doug Ford has taken an axe to education spending in Ontario. He has killed Ontario's new French university. He's ended free tuition to students of limited means. And now under the banner of "free speech," he has made student fees at universities optional. But "free speech" was always a fig leaf. Yesterday, Ford's real reason for optionalizing student fees stepped out in the open. Robert Benzie and Kristen Rushowy report in *The Toronto Star:* The Progressive Conservatives ended mandatory ancillary student fees to tackle the red menace. That’s the message of the governing party’s... more »

IS GLOBAL WARMING THEORY SCIENTIFIC?
A fundamental principle of science is that a theory, to have any significance, must be falsifiable. Science proceeds by proposing a hypothesis, and figuring out what the hypothesis implies. Scientists then make real-world observations to determine whether the theory’s implications do, in fact, obtain. They look for implications that are specific to the theory, so … Continue reading "IS GLOBAL WARMING THEORY SCIENTIFIC?"

NY: Parents Call For Charter Pause and Evaluation
NYC school district's parent board has come out in opposition to raising New York's charter school cap. Will Governor Cuomo hear them? The New York City schools are under mayoral control (never, ever, an ideal system), so they have no school boards. What they do have is thirty-six Community Education Councils composed of elected parents. Those CECs in turn have an Education Council Consortium, composed of representatives from each of the CECs. Their stated purpose is "to address issues that affect schools and communities throughout all the boroughs and meets regularly with the Chanc... more »
THIS IS WHY IT WAS POINTLESS FOR DEMOCRATS TO CONSIDER DUMPING PELOSI
During the 2018 midterm campaign, several Democratic House candidates pledged not to vote for Nancy Pelosi as speaker of the House. Many commentators who claimed to have the Democrats' best interests at heart agreed that Pelosi should go. Pelosi is speaker now, and what are Republicans doing? The Republican Party has a new trio of Democratic villains: Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.... The NRCC has sent out thousands of emails trying to tie vulnerable Democrats to Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib and Omar. And the committee's website makes it appear as if these backbenc... more »
European, U.S. Governments Are Paralyzed: Crisis Is a Time for Big Ideas, of LaRouche
[image: UK Prime Minister Theresa May travelled to the Berlin to have a bilateral meeting with German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, at the Chancellery. Dec 11, 2018 (flickr/number10gov)] A crisis, of the failed British elite's making, has seized the governments of the "major powers" of Europe, emphatically including that of the UK itself, eliminated their credibility, and robbed their power to govern. It has left stable only Italy, because of its new government's rejection of British geopolitics. The British insistence on a NATO war confrontation with Russia, and the stubborn impositi... more »

On Skepticism, Atheism, and Dogmatism
Atheism means skepticism about the existence of God, but if this position is taken seriously, then it necessarily leads to a dogmatic belief in God’s nonexistence. Therefore every utter atheist is essentially a dogmatic believer in a negative, which is God’s nonexistence. Here’s a perspective from Stephen C. Pepper’s *World Hypothesis *(Page 4-5): "What can the utter skeptic himself mean? Does he mean that all facts are illusory and all statements are false? But this position is not one of doubt, but of downright disbelief. It is disbelief in the reliability of all evidence and in t... more »
Macron takes on Germany
An intense political conflict has flared up, this time between France and Germany. It seems that nobody saw it coming. Since as recently as January, in Aachen, Germany, Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel were looking like new lovers. However, this political honeymoon didn't last for long. No more than two weeks later, the German Süddeutsche Zeitung announced Macron's anger. On Thursday, the newspaper published a leak that France was planning to confront Nord Stream 2 - the natural gas pipeline from Russia to Europe. The US wants to kill Nord Stream 2 and force Europe to purchase m... more »

Klobuchar Revisited: You Know Who Loves Her? Republicans-- And We Ought To Ask Ourselves Why
And it's not just because she treats her staff like shit. When we covered her announcement Sunday, we came across former Iowa state Senator David Johnson. Johnson, a dairy farmer, served in the legislature since 1999, representing the beet-red northwest part of the state. In 2016, he left the GOP-- noting that Trump was unqualified to lead the nation. He didn't join the Democrats but continued on as an independent. Once he realized he wouldn't win reelection, he announced he wouldn't run again in 2018. Now Johnson is working to help Klobuchar win the Democratic caucus, claiming "t... more »

*At Harvard, Asian-American students urge diversity efforts beyond admissions* On the stand in federal court, on social media, and during rallies, they defended Harvard University in a landmark trial over affirmative action in college admissions last year, helping to shore up the school’s case that it doesn’t discriminate against Asian-American applicants. But in recent weeks, some Asian-American students and alumni say they have been frustrated by the glacial pace of Harvard’s efforts to improve diversity beyond admissions. The imminent departures of two Asian-American professor... more »
The Supreme Court and Military Jurisdiction Over Retired Servicemembers
Airmen at a mock court-martial in 2015, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. (Air Force photo/Senior Airman Naomi Griego) From Admiral Bill McRaven to General Michael Hayden and General Martin Dempsey, some of President Donald Trump’s more visible critics of late have been retired military officers. And a provision of federal law little known outside the military makes it a crime, triable by court-martial, for those individuals (and any other commissioned military officer) to use “contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the S... more »

How is a same-sex wedding like an Israeli West Bank settlement? Discrimination based on either is not protected by the First Amendment. Laws in 26 states provide that the state will not contract with companies that refuse to do business with those who invest in Israel. In three states, the American Civil Liberties Union has suedto enjoin these laws, claiming that boycotts are protected by the First Amendment. The argument has gotten some traction: two courts were persuaded, and free speech considerations persuaded many US Senators to vote againstan anti-BDS bill. However, less t... more »
The shutdown: Drowning government in the bathtub
William E. Nelson, Professor of Law, New York University at Politics + Society – The Conversation - 16 hours ago
The government shutdown provided a short-term version of what some activists have long wanted: A government small enough so that you could 'drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub.'
Just like love, money will find a way
I'm sure many of my readers know the old proverb, "Love will find a way". That may or may not be true . . . but money usually does, too, and probably much more reliably than love. If someone wants something badly enough to pay the costs involved, someone else will find a way to supply it, irrespective of laws, natural obstacles and any other barriers. (Witness the trade in illegal drugs, which flourishes despite literally tens of billions of dollars spent fighting it each and every year.) In that light, I was amused to read an account of how US ethanol is still being sold in Chi... more »
