After 25 Years Of Chaos, FDA Signals For Reform When It Comes To Supplement Oversight

Hank Campbell at Science 2.0 blogs - 9 hours ago
United States Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D., has been in the private sector and in government, he has been care provider and patient, he has used supplements and watched as a $40 billion supplements industry duped the gullible and often engaged in outright deception, all using an exemption granted by the U.S. government. But a recent statement by him, coupled with a raft of warning letters to supplement companies, signals that might change. read more

Afghan Civilians Fear CIA-Backed Death Squads that Can Call In Airstrikes

Alexander Rubinstein at 13 hours ago
[image: undefined] Elite CIA-backed special forces in Afghanistan are leaving a trail of carnage in the country. As such units do not operate under the umbrella of the Department of Defense, they have been given near-impunity despite standing accused of war crimes. Last month, the New York Times cited “senior Afghan and international officials” who said that while most strike forces in Afghanistan have been put under the purview of Afghan intelligence since 2012, two of the most “ruthless” units are “still sponsored mainly by the CIA.” On Friday, the Bureau of Investigative Journal... more »

Understanding State Propaganda From The USSR to The USA

Adam Garrie at 13 hours ago
[image: undefined] While the *de jure* role of state sponsored propaganda is to convince a population to adopt a certain line of thinking on the issues of the day, the *de facto* function of state sponsored propaganda is rather different. In a society in which even a sizeable minority of the public are capable of critical thinking, few will immediately believe everything they are told, even if they can’t quite put their figure on a specific point of contention. Because of that, in educated societies as the Soviet Union’s was, state propaganda serves a purpose of alerting people as t... more »

President Starts a War? Congress Yawns. Threatens to End One? Condemnation!

Ron Paul at 13 hours ago
[image: undefined] Last week’s bipartisan Senate vote to rebuke President Trump for his decision to remove troops from Syria and Afghanistan unfortunately tells us a lot about what is wrong with Washington, DC. While the two parties loudly bicker about minor issues, when it comes to matters like endless wars overseas they enthusiastically join together. With few exceptions, Republicans and Democrats lined up to admonish the president for even suggesting that it’s time for US troops to come home from Afghanistan and Syria. The amendment, proposed by the Senate Majority Leader and pa... more »

From Jenna Orkin Congressman Walter Jones Dies I met Walter Jones in 2005 when I was visiting Congress to discuss Peak Oil. One hallway in the House of Representatives was lined with posters depicting all the American soldiers who'd died in Iraq. The effect was stunning and as I stood there, a man came out of the corner office. He was older than many of the people one encounters in those halls - aides of under thirty, so I sensed he was a Congressman, particularly as he seemed interested in my response to the exhibit. It had been his idea, as it turns out. He did not believe Cong... more »

“Humanitarian Intervention” And The „New World Order“: Violation Of The International Law (I)

Vladislav B. SOTIROVIĆ at OrientalReview.org - 14 hours ago
The term „humanitarian intervention“ is the American political neologism (newly coined word) to morally cover a new format of Washington’s global imperialism at the time of the post-Cold War’s „New World Order“ in which the USA feel very comfortable to play a role of a global policeman. Thinking About Risks From AI: Accidents, Misuse and Structure

An early Google self-driving car. (Source: Flickr/LoKan Sardari) World leaders have woken up to the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) over the past year. Billions of dollars in governmental funding have been announced, dozens of hearings have been held, and nearly 20 national plans have been adopted. In the past couple of months alone, Canada and France launched the International Panel on AI (IPAI), modeled on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, to examine the global impacts of AI; the U.S. Congress created a National Security Commission on the subject; and the ... more »

Venezuela's Socially Responsible Banking

A Political Junkie at Viable Opposition - 14 hours ago
Back in 2012, Rachael Boothroyd wrote an interesting article entitled "Venezuela Increases Banks' Obligatory Social Contributions, U.S. and Europe Does Not" which appeared on Venezuelanalysis. This missive which was written three short years after Wall Street banks caused the near collapse of the global economy gives us a sense of yet another one of the reasons why Washington is moving against the democratically Maduro government, trying to replace it with one that is more palatable to their narrative. As background, during the 2008 - 2009 crisis, paralleling the situation in the w... more »

Socialism For The Rich

Owen Gray at Northern Reflections - 14 hours ago
Donald Trump has declared that he's the enemy of socialism. But Robert Reich writes that what he stands for is socialism for the rich. Capitalism is for everyone else: In the conservative mind, socialism means getting something for doing nothing. That pretty much describes the $21bn saved by the nation’s largest banks last year thanks to Trump’s tax cuts, some of which went into massive bonuses for bank executives. On the other hand, more than 4,000 lower-level bank employees got a big dose of harsh capitalism. They lost their jobs. Banks that are too big to fail – courtesy of th... more »

The Problem with "Monopoly."

Peter Greene at CURMUDGUCATION - 14 hours ago
A standard piece of charter/choice rhetoric is to refer to the public school monopoly, the suggestion being that school choice is needed in order to break the public school stranglehold. I'd argue that the term is not accurate, that it suggests a single nationwide education entity that imply doesn't exist. Can an enterprise be a monopoly if it's actually several thousand individual entities? But that's not what I want to talk about today. Instead, I want to talk about what the use of he word "monopoly" reveals about the choice cheerleaders ho use it. Let's think about this for a se... more »

THE 2020 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION WILL BE A REFERENDUM ON ONE CANDIDATE -- AND IT MIGHT NOT BE TRUMP

Steve M. at No More Mister Nice Blog - 15 hours ago
The real and (mostly) imagined scandals of Hillary Clinton received more coverage during the 2016 campaign than the very real, very serious should-have-been-scandals of Donald Trump. The standard explanation is that most political insiders assumed that Clinton would win, so the press was getting a head start on holding the next president accountable. In an ideal world, a presidential election with no incumbent wouldn't be a referendum on one candidate rather than the other. Sometimes, as in 2008, it's a referendum on the previous president. That was a year when Democrats were fortu... more »

E. Kent Yucel I would like to give some additional perspective on the widely-touted Medicare for All (MFA) movement, which seems almost to have become a litmus test for being considered a competitive Democratic presidential candidate. Unfortunately, MFA, as it is used in the parlance of most advocates as well as the Democratic presidential candidates, skips over several important issues. These issues cut to the heart of whether or not MFA is a feasible approach to achieving universal health insurance in the United States. I want to emphasize that I make these points ... more »

This is when a pilot earns his flying pay
