Kahlil Gibran, “The Farewell”

You have sung to me in my aloneness, and I of your longings have built a tower in the sky. But now our sleep has fled and our dream is over, and it is no longer dawn. The noontide is upon us and our half waking has turned to fuller day, and we must part. If in the twilight of memory we should meet once more, we shall speak again together and you shall sing to me a deeper song. And if our hands should meet in another dream we shall build another tower in the sky.” - Kahlil Gib... more »

Life is deep and high and distant; and though only your vast vision can reach even her feet, yet she is near; and though only the breath of your breath reaches her heart, the shadow of your shadow crosses her face, and the echo of your faintest cry becomes a spring and an autumn in her breast. Trump Seems To Think He Went Overboard On That Whole Chaotic Thing
Chris Whipple, author of *The Gatekeepers: How the White House Chiefs of Staff Define Every Presidency*, spoke with Chris Riback about how Donald Trump’s White House compares to others. Short version: "the most dysfunctional White House in history." Maybe Señor Trumpanzee listened to it and took it to heart because Gabe Sherman reported Friday in *Vanity Fair* that Trump wants a clean reset and get a whole new White House staff, one that is 100% MAGA. He's going to fire everyone who isn't onboard with his crackpot agenda, including Ivanka and Kushner-in-law. He's tired of being r... more »

What Happens When America's Enemies Attack with Their Own Drones?
*Eugene K. Chow* *Security, North America* The Pentagon is set to spend $332 Million on drone defense. Cheap drones are a deadly problem with an expensive solution for the U.S. military. With devastating effect, ISIS has rigged store-bought drones to drop grenades and serve as kamikaze bombers strapped with RPG warheads. In Iraq, more than a dozen have been killed and over fifty injured by these makeshift weapons. To defend against this lethal miniature air force, the U.S. military is investing heavily in technology, exploring everything from high-powered lasers to ray guns to... more »
Trump's New 'Low-Yield' Nuclear Weapon: Two Bad Ideas Rolled into One
*Tom Z. Collina* *Security, North America* Congress has already rejected them both. President Donald Trump wants a new nuclear weapon. Just a “small” one, no bigger than the ones that leveled Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Why? The president’s advisors think Russia “apparently” believes Trump might be reluctant to use some of the 4,000 nukes he already has because they are massively destructive. *That* would be crazy. But this new one, with a lower yield, would be more “usable” against Russia because it would cause less damage. This is not a new idea. Nor is it a good idea. It’... more »

Winston Churchill's Escape during This Battle Made Him a Legend Forever
*Warfare History Network* *History, Europe* And it was way before World War II. Few historical figures have brooked imprisonment worse than Winston Spencer Churchill. Marched off to the States Model School in Pretoria, he saw great events passing him by. He asked for help from anyone—his mother, the Prince of Wales, an American senator friend. “I am 25 today,” he lamented. “It is terrible to think how little time remains.” Even the comparatively beneficent Boer prison regime was suffocating, exacerbating his always pronounced depressive tendencies. Sins of omission
The whole Jeremy Corbyn/antisemitic Facebook group story may be igniting large parts of my social media timeline - as it's done for days - but the BBC's timeline is remaining stubbornly indifferent to it. Sky (among many others), for instance, reported yesterday that former chief rabbi Lord Sacks - a high-profile public figure - said he wouldn't sit down with Jeremy Corbyn until Labour took "resolute action" to tackle antisemitism in the party. Now that, to me at least, is newsworthy and I'd expect the BBC to report it. But, as far as I can see, the BBC *hasn't* reported it.
A Plethora Of Preponderance
The sky reflects a lot of *'time' *as measured presently. The *'space' *is... unimaginable, *beyond infinity*...! *These *are dwarfed by *'surfaces'*: places where we'd stand if we'd had *imagination*... were less *facile*—*in command*. A Trivial Post
Whether it's predictive text, Spellcheck or Google Translate, the suggestions our artificially intelligent friends give us can, from time to time, give us an inadvertent laugh. The tool I use to make transcribing easier, TV Eyes, came up with a belter tonight when it tried to catch the name 'Dominic Casciani'. (I was seeking a transcript of BBC One's evening news bulletin at the time, as you do). As regular BBC watchers will know, Dominic is one of the BBC's home affairs correspondents. He's featured in 14 of our posts so far (and counting), mostly for crimes against impartiali... more »
Robert Mueller has a fan letter that Donald Trump wrote to Vladimir Putin back in 2013.

The most important question: Why?...
*for ourselves and for others.* My quest to provoke and prod my feeble little brain into some understanding of *why *people believe and do stuff ("stuff" is a highly academic word, but I promise not to throw out too many more 10 dollar words) continues. Having already read about half of David Horowitz's book, *Radicals: Portraits of a Destructive Passion,* I am no closer to an answer. From Karl Marx to Barack Obama, Horowitz shows how the idealistic impulse to make the world “a better place” gives birth to the twin cultural pathologies of cynicism and nihilism, and is the chief sou... more »
Day 27: Democracy drowned by the corporate agenda
*Graphic by Suzanna Lasker* We’ve now had 107 letters, Op-Eds, radio and public access TV interviews on 28 Maine media outlets opposing the GD corporate welfare bill. Not bad for a one-man band....There were 17 of us folks at BIW this morning for the weekly Lenten vigil. These vigils will continue for the next three Saturdays. It was cold with cloudy skies and quite windy as it often is along the Kennebec River that runs through Bath. We had our usual BIW security man following us as we moved from the administration building to the South gate where workers stream out when the n... more »
Back in Time for Bias
Richard Littlejohn may not be everybody's cup of tea (though I'm partial to him, especially if served with milk) but about BBC Two's cookery-based historical 'reality' show *Back in Time for Tea* he's absolutely bang on the mark. His piece is headlined *It's always grim Oop North on t'BBC... As RJ says, the series features a typical family from Bradford, who are transported back in time to experience life in differe... more »
March 10: Pennies from Heaven?
I have just remembered the topic I had written about in my March 8 blog – and lost. It was about tax avoidance by the wealthy We have the knowledge that the wealthy all over the world have for many, many years been hiding their money from taxes by putting it in secret bank accounts. I don’t know the cost of this for Canada except that it must run for many, many billions of dollars. And in the U.S. it runs to many, many trillions of dollars. That’s why we have to cut back on education spending, on health (and in the U.S. cut down to almost no health at all). That’s why we can’t get ... more »

Security In Iraq, Mar 1-7
There was an increase in attacks across central Iraq during the first week of March. While that did not translate to any real change in casualties, it did point to the Islamic State becoming bolder since it converted to an insurgency at the end of last year. There were 78 incidents reported during the start of March, the most since 79 from November 15-21, 2017. Those were spread across Babil (1), Dohuk (1), Kurdistan (1), Irbil (2), Salahaddin (6), Anbar (7), Diyala (12), Kirkuk (12), Ninewa (12), and Baghdad (24). During the first week of March, Baghdad was at its regular high num... more »

The Changing Arctic–Nov 1922
By Paul Homewood In 1922, NOAA knew that the Arctic was undergoing a “radical change of climate”, and was “not recognizable” from the climate of 1868 to 1917. In November that year, NOAA published this chapter in their Monthly Weather Review: https://journals.ametsoc.org/toc/mwre/50/11 They must have had proper scientists in those days. Advertisements
God gave us methods of science, let’s use them properly to address changes in climate.
The global climate system is always changing and adjusting, always has, always will. Climates change. Climate is a major challenge, has been a major challenge, and will be a major challenge in the future. A UN committee was not necessary … Continue reading →
