Fifty years ago, on June 12, 1967, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down one
of the most important civil rights decisions in American history, Loving v.
Virginia. The landmark case ended the last of the country’s state laws
banning interracial marriage – prohibitions described in the case’s oral
arguments as “the most odious of the segregation laws and the slavery laws.”
This wasn’t simply the dramatic end to longstanding policy justified with biblical
assertions about the separation of the races. In the most intimate human
terms, the court’s... more »

How are U.S. presidents and FBI directors supposed to communicate?
A new FBI director has recently been nominated, former Assistant Attorney
General Christopher Wray. He will certainly be thinking carefully about
this question as he awaits confirmation.
Former FBI Director James Comey’s relationship with President Donald Trump
was strained at best. Comey was concerned that Trump had approached him on nine
different occasions in two months. In his testimony to Congress, Comey

Chet Raymo, “Counting Out”
*“Counting Out” *
by Chet Raymo
"Remember "counting out"? Do kids still "count out"? Consider a count among
six children:

(3)if he (4)hollers (5)let him (6)go, (1)einie (2)meenie (3)meinie (4)mo.
Number 4 is "out."
Back in the early 70s, Kenneth Goldstein published an ethnographic study of
counting out rhymes. By extending the rhyme, a clever counter could count
out a child other than number 4:
(5)My (6)mother (1)says (2)that (3)you (4)are (5)it.

Please stop talking!
Did I mention that these days people everywhere are talking about BBC bias?
It’s the next big dinner-party thing, after antisemitism and Islamophobia.
We’re rapidly becoming superfluous but I’m taking our potential redundancy
as a sign of success; not that the trend for noticing the BBC’s bias is
likely to have been due to sites like ITBB. It’s just something that is
painfully obvious, and for some reason the penny suddenly seems to have
dropped. It’s a national zeitgeist, and zeitgeists work in mysterious ways.

Bear breaks into home and 'plays' piano, steals food from freezer
A Colorado woman captured an unusual intruder on her home footage: a black
bear who played with the piano.
Katie Hawley came home on May 31 and discovered her kitchen and living room
had been damaged. She called Vail Police, thinking it was a burglar. After
officers took a look around, though, they determined that a black bear had
entered through an open window to forage for food.
While inside the bear not only took food from the freezer, it also paused a
moment to "play" the piano, which Hawley realized when she reviewed her
home footage.

Jonathan Chait believes that Republicans will never agree to impeach the

Conservatives still have not lost their sense of being an insurgent

Conservatives think of their role as quasi-independent, but they also
imagine it as focusing exclusively on enforcing fealty to their doctrine by
politicians who might otherwise be inclined to wander. The scenario they

New Pentagon China Report Highlights the Rise of Beijing's Maritime Militia
Issued yesterday, the Pentagon’s annual report to Congress on China’s
military and security developments contains a typically vast array of data,
some publicly specified or confirmed for the first time. Among its 106
pages—arguably the most significant development is its unprecedented
coverage of China’s maritime militia—the first official U.S. government
assessment to call it out in public. This is a long overdue and welcome
breakthrough: the shadowy but knowable force’s vanguard units are literally

Terrorism in Tehran: Reality Confounds Rhetoric
For Americans fed a diet of rhetoric about Iran that constantly links it to
the sending, not the receiving, end of terrorism—in which “the leading
state sponsor of terrorism” is the adjectival phrase routinely affixed to

Riyadh mashes Iran together with Sunni Islamist terrorism of the ISIS
variety into one undifferentiated blob of evil—the deadly attacks today in
Tehran generate much cognitive dissonance. But however disorienting this
news may have been, it is true. An obviously well-planned operation struck... more »

Science, engineering, and leadership
West Virginia University professor James E. Smith argues that, without a
basic understanding of the scientific process that has been so successful
and useful in getting us to this point in our collective histories, we can
hardly expect to see a better future if similar men and women are not at
the helm. Maybe a little less pandering and a lot more proper
decision-making based on scientific facts will make the governance process
more attractive to professionals for whom a future legacy of successful
advancements is a valued outcome – and thus better for our future.

Among the important characteristics of the user-pay principle is that only
those who use the service or facility will pay for its construction and
maintenance while the rest of the population -- who won’t use them -- will
be spared of such cost. This characteristic is embedded in the
public-private partnership (PPP) mode of construction, procurement, and
maintenance of big infrastructure projects.
In contrast, projects that are funded through the annual general

Russia: US-Declared 'De-Confliction Zone' In Syria Illegitimate

groups fighting alongside the US in Iraq and in fact may Iraqi citizens
