Some preliminaries though: The geological profession can be categorised into two major camps, hard rock and soft rock. Hard rockers deal with volcanics, metamorphic and igneous … Continue reading Out of Place Soils

Day in Portland: Trains and Film
MB and I went to Portland today to see the tall sailing ships and a movie. As we were walking toward the port district we passed by the narrow gauge train museum and went inside to have a look. I've always loved trains and still have my train set that I got for Christmas in 1959. In fact I still have the turkey box from our holiday turkey that year that I have kept the train in ever since. In later years I gave the train to my son Julian but it is still stored in our attic with his baseball cards and other such things. In 1980 I worked with friend John Hedrick in Orlando, Flo... more »
Exoplanets, waterworlds and asteroids
After three postings about politics and winning this phase of the Civil War... how about some *space stuff?* Proof that we are members of a dynamic, bold, competent scientific civilization. A planetary system similar to our own: Epsilon Eridani, at 10.5 light years, is one of the nearest solitary stars roughly similar to our sun, and hence was inspected by Frank Drake, in the 1960s, for possible SETI signals. Now, as well reported on the SETI Institute’s site, new infrared observations reveal a system very similar to ours, with a Jovian planet riding herd just outside a silicate-do... more »

DCCC-- Never Too Busy To Protect Paul Ryan's House Seat In Wisconsin-- It's In Their DNA Now
That’s an old Blue America radio spot we ran against Paul Ryan at some point in the distant past. As you may know, Randy Bryce isn’t the first Democrat to go up against Ryan. In 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006 Ryan's Democratic challenger was Jeffrey Thomas, a retired orthopedic surgeon from Ryan's hometown of Janesville. The Ryan-friendly Thomas' only issue for his first three runs was healthcare and he never quite cracked a third of the vote, but in 2006 he ran against Ryan's shady relationship with Republican corruptionists Jack Abramoff and Tom DeLay and went all the way to 37%. CNN Spins Depp Assassination Threat, Blames Trump
[image: cnn-spins-depp-assassination-threat-blames-trump] A CNN segment on Johnny Depp’s remarks about assassinating President Trump was little more than a thinly-veiled attempt to use the moment to smear the president and his supporters. On Friday morning, host Kate Bolduan and guests Guy Cecil, head of the Democratic SuperPAC, Priorities USA and CNN political commentator Keith Boykin — who is also a former Clinton White House aide — somehow managed to turn a threat against the president’s life into an indictment of the president.

Free Speech on the Way Out: Al Jazeera Targeted for Take-Down

The ossified model of centralized media dissemination and control has been disrupted by the decentralized model of the web 2.0 platform. Of course, free speech means that sophists who care little for the pursuit of truth may have as much influence as... more »
