"Are There Any Questions?"
"Are There Any Questions?" by Robert Fulghum "Are there any questions?" An offer that comes at the end of college lectures and long meetings. Said when an audience is not only overdosed with information, but when there is no time left anyhow. At times like that you sure do have questions. Like, "Can we leave now?" and "What the hell was this meeting for?" and "Where can I get a drink?" The gesture is supposed to indicate openness on the part of the speaker, I suppose, but if in fact you do ask a question, both the speaker and the audience will give you drop-dead looks. The 'De-Escalation Zones' are a Clever Trick. Thank God.
[image: undefined] In my opinion, Putin and Lavrov are even more clever than I had thought. The Astana process proposal for "de-escalation zones" in Syria has something for everyone: 1. The SAG will receive yet more advice and assistance from Russia. As evidence of this R+6 forces are assembling in the eastern Homs Province area for a massive drive to liberate Deir al-Zor. The Tiger Forces and 5th Corps of the SAA seem to be poised to spearhead this drive. This effort, evidently to be conducted with full Russian air and advisory support is not indicative of Russia having "thrown i... more »

How Berkeley and NYU’s Anti-Free Speech Actions are as Unconstitutional as Hell
[image: undefined] Ann Coulter will not speak at Berkeley this week because the threat of mob violence lead campus authorities to claim they could not protect her. The same threats led New York University (NYU) to cancel Milo Yiannopoulos’ appearance in February. These are shameful actions by two universities, and they are unconstitutional as hell. Previous violence at Berkeley directed against Yiannopoulos, as well as the current threats, originated with a coalition of so-called antifa’s, anti-fascists, persons who believe in Trump’s America violence to silence speech they do not ... more »
May 6: The Hard Truth
The very hard truth. Since 1945, the U.S. has killed - nobody knows how many -15 million? more? It has created at least eighty million refugees - civilians, mostly. They drown, starve to death, are sold into slavery in their flight. The survivors have just spent a winter in the filthy and dangerous refugee camps created by Europeans who don't want them. (The U.S. won't help them at all.) Most of those children will never see school for any significant time. And what will happen to all those wretched people is anybody's guess. Why is the U.S. behaving like this? Part of this is the ... more »
Legitimation Crisis
I'm sitting here Saturday morning typing after finishing up today's grading. I can only grade in bursts or I get crabby pointing out non-sequiturs and poor grammar. Too much of those things can produce indigestion. Although, I know I'm guilty also of producing them in this age of constant acceleration. I haven't posted in a few days due to the end of the semester rush. It was an insane semester because of a very high workload and because of the general climate of anxiety that pervades the university. Uncertainty is high and trust in institutions is low. BWorld 127, Economic freedom in Asia means faster growth, lower prices
* This is my article in BusinessWorld on April 26, 2017. Thanks to its rapid economic growth, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is being looked up to by other economic blocs as it celebrates its 50th anniversary this month in Manila. The pace of trade liberalization until this decade is perhaps the world’s fastest both among ASEAN member-states, and even among those outside the group. Free trade creates good will among people and governments across the globe. It gives foreign trade partners greater access to the home market and, in the process, these trade partner... more »
Who--or What--Is the "Fittest"?

It is also known as "might makes right". Except the tyrant, even if he dies of old age, is NOT the fittest in the hearts and minds of all those he oppresses; and might does NOT make right--I am SURE you know that, though you might be inclined to deny it here.* *In the end, who decides who--or what--is... more »
