Why China's Slick Strategy to Dominate the South China Sea Is Working
*Michael Vatikiotis*
*Security, Asia*
And is unlikely to be challenged.
A year ago, there were real fears that contested claims over tiny specks of
coral in the South China Sea could spark a war in Southeast Asia involving
China, the 10 ASEAN member states and the US. The risks greatly multiplied
after a special tribunal convened in The Hague under the Law of the Sea
ruled in July 2016 that China’s territorial claims in Philippine waters had
no legal basis. What has transpired since then demonstrates the pragmatism
of regional states, the limited extent of US influence in Asia, a... more »

Water Structure: It's Different At Nanoscale Size And Different Temperature
The surface of water drops at 100 nm size changes with temperature. At room
temperature, the surface water molecules of these droplets have much
stronger interactions than a normal water surface. The structural
difference corresponds to a difference in temperature of -50°C.
Nanometric-sized water drops are everywhere, as droplets or aerosols in
air, in our bodies as medication, and in rocks and oil fields. How they

Responses To Terrorism
For a second time this week, I find myself turning to something Robin Sears

remembers when he and his wife lived in London:
My wife left Harrod’s less than an hour before the IRA’s Christmas attack.
The savage bombing of the Queen’s Horses and their trainers rattled my
London office windows across the park. I watched a terrorist hit team spray
women and children with blood and tissue, murdering one of Palestine’s
saints, 10 feet in front of me in a crowded holiday hotel lobby. The Tokyo

The Biggest Fallacies of Washington's Budgets
The release of the proposed fiscal 2018 federal budget from the Trump
Administration revealed, once again, why Washington's annual budgets are
barely worth the paper that they are written on. While the budget
proclaims that it will help reduce the threat to American prosperity from
the $20 trillion federal debt that was inherited from the Obama
Administration, it makes broad economic assumptions that will be the
undoing of this latest iteration of fiscal (mis)management from Washington.
Let's start by looking at the assumptions made in the budget from Table S-9

UK Government’s Controlled Mainstream News Controls Your Emotions
When people die, it's very sad. But what's even sadder, is when your
government exploits your emotions to kill more people in wars of occupation

What people tend to forget is, both sides are controlled by the same
people. ISIS and the UK government are one and the same.
So let's get our act together and get angry at this Satanism that's

sufism

The Poet: Paul Laurence Dunbar, “We Wear The Mask”
*“We Wear The Mask”*
“We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,-
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
And mouth with myriad subtleties.
Why should the world be overwise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while
We wear the mask.
We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
To thee from tortured souls arise.
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
But let the world dream otherwise,
We wear the mask!”

The Islamic State group has weaponized children
Mia Bloom, Professor of Communication, Georgia State University at Politics + Society – The Conversation - 1 day ago
In claiming responsibility for the attack in Manchester at an Ariana Grande
concert on May 22, the Islamic State group has sunk to a new low.
We have seen terrorists target venues where young people congregate before
– shopping malls, discos and schools. If IS was indeed involved, they have
now deliberately targeted young children, tweens and teens and their
parents in a horrific attack that has killed 22 as of this writing and
wounded 59. The attacker used a nail bomb to maximize the carnage.
Through my research I have gained access to the Islamic State’s encrypted

The May 22 suicide bombing at a concert in Manchester, England has claimed
at least 22 lives. Once again we find ourselves mourning the loss of
innocents and wondering how our societies can find normalcy in a world of
suicide attacks, car rammings and mass shootings. Many pundits have already
called for the United Kingdom and other societies to increase their levels
of security, add more police officers and install security personnel, ... more »

This Is Why the United States Is No Longer a Military "Hyperpower"
*Dave Majumdar*
*Security, *
Thanks, Russia and China.
The United States is no longer the “hyperpower” it once was in the
immediate aftermath of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Where once Washington held a position of complete dominance, the United
States is now faced with competing powers—some of which can field
peer-level capabilities.
“The military environment has shifted away from the existence of the United
States as the single ‘hyperpower’ to a situation in which foreign
militaries are emerging with near-peer and, in some areas, peer
capabilities,” U.S... more »
Why Do Russia, China, Iran and Cuba All Have in Common? Intelligence Services Gunning for America
*Dave Majumdar*
*Security, *
And new technology is helping their efforts.
Foreign intelligence services such as Russia’s SVR and GRU are amongst the
most dangerous threats facing the United States according to senior U.S.
intelligence officials. While Russia and China are the two most dangerous
and potent threats, even intelligence services from smaller nations like
Cuba and Iran can pose a significant danger.
“Foreign intelligence services present a grave threat to DoD’s [Department
of Defense] ability to plan and execute strategic operations across the
globe,” U.S. Marine Cor... more »

Is North Korea Using China's Satellites to Guide Its Missiles?
*Peter J. Brown*
*Security, Asia*
Is this possible?
As North Korea fires more missiles in its drive to build and test rockets
to reach the US mainland, one issue largely overlooked is that satellites
are among methods used to guide such weapons to their targets.
Pyongyang doesn’t have a satellite navigation network, raising speculation
that if it is using such a guidance system then is it tapping into China’s?
While information on military programs in the North is difficult to verify,
reports going back to 2014 show that North Korean engineers were in China

China Isn't Rising—It's Merely Outlasting Other Nations

*Politics, Asia*
[image: Soldier in Tiananmen Square. Flickr/Creative Commons/Richard Fisher] China
has been a hegemon and source of civilization for at least twenty
centuries; its rise is not new.
Does China’s imperial past predict its future? Does Europe’s past predict
Asia’s future? These are the wrong questions to be asking. Asia is much
more than simply China, and Asia itself is much more than simply a
reflection of Europe. The question is not whether there are any lessons to
be drawn from Europe’s bloody past; nor is the question whether there is
anything e... more »

outweighing security too.
When Hillary Clinton made her first visit to China as secretary of state in
2009, she stressed the need for economic cooperation. But then she startled
human-rights advocates by declaring that “our pressing on those issues
can’t interfere with the global economic crisis, the global climate change
crisis, and the security crisis.”
I joined in the criticism: “Trade trumps human r... more »
