China's Buildup Of Its Naval Forces Continues
*Lyle J. Goldstein, National Interest*:* China Prepares to Ramp Up its Shipbuilding Process* *Why Washington should pay more attention to China's buildup of undersea forces.* A decade ago, myriad questions hung over the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). The only modern vessel it seemed capable of building in a hurry was a coastal fast attack craft, hardly the stuff of a world-class fleet. Where were the large surface combatants or even the frigates that are the workhorses of any sea service? And then there was the biggest question of all: would China actually go all in for th... more »

From shell-shock to PTSD, a century of invisible war trauma

Some soldiers' wounds in WWI were more mental than physical. George Metcalf Archival Collection, CC BY-NC-ND In the wake of World War I, some veterans returned wounded, but not with obvious physical injuries. Instead, their symptoms were similar to those that had previously been associated with hysterical women – most commonly amnesia, or some kind of paralysis or inability to communicate with no clear physical cause. English physician Charles Myers, who wrote the first paper on “shell-shock” in 1915, theorized that these symptoms actually did stem from a physical injury. He posite... more »

Re-Writing History
History is being written. The narrative evolving in the mainstream media about the 2016 election is that Hillary Clinton lost as a result of Russian hacking. It has yet to be disclosed how Russian hacking caused the election loss. I think the soon-to-be-hegemonic explanatory framework is going to articulate a "dumbed-down" American public, represented as too befuddled to discern truth from the "fake news" about Hillary Clinton promulgated across the Internet. What will be missing from this emerging narrative's explanatory framework? Declining economic opportunities wrought by Clin... more »

In 2008 we got a short preview of what life will be like, but most Americans seem to have come to the conclusion that the last financial crisis was just a minor bump in the road toward endless economic prosperity. The world seems to have conveniently forgotten about the Panama Papers. That’s bad for us all.
The ‘Panama Papers‘ scandal was one of the biggest data leaks in history. Ecuador’s Ruling Leftist Party Claims Victory In Yesterday's Presidential Elections. Opposition Claims Fraud
*Washington Post:* *Ecuador on edge as leftist party appears to extend its reign* QUITO, Ecuador — Ecuador was locked in a political standoff Monday after a disputed presidential vote, with leftist candidate Lenín Moreno claiming victory and his conservative opponent denouncing the results as fraudulent. I feel the urge to revisit some recent topics. Sayeeda Warsi is one of the BBC’s privileged Muslim spokespersons whose visceral hatred of Israel is always allowed to stand unchallenged. Since I posted my earlier comments several further reviews of her book The Enemy Within have materialised. Jenni Russell, for instance, in the Sunday Times (£) has written a rather respectful review, but one gets a vague impression that she’s written it through gritted teeth. Ancient Ways Humans Kept The Dead From Rising Out Of The Grave
Vampires, ghouls, zombies, they have become part of Western burial imagery even though they originated elsewhere. Yet concern about the dead rising from their graves was evident long before tales arrived from Romania or Haiti. From the 11th to 14th centuries AD, medieval people in England likely believed strongly enough in animated corpses they actually took measures to prevent it. The bones come from the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy, North Yorkshire, a site managed by English Heritage. Canada's Banks and Chief Executive Officer Compensation
The Great Canadian Banking sector has been in the news rather regularly over the past few weeks with stories about outsourcing jobs to overseas nations, over-selling products to customers and record-breaking profit levels. In light of the news coverage, I wanted to look at a rarely reported banking sector statistic, the high level of CEO compensation. To source this data, I have looked at the 2017 editions of the Proxy Circulars for each of the banks and summarized the data in a table for your perusal. Each of the Big Five Canadian banks has its own method of calculating compensat... more »

No Place For Amateurs
The Bloviators of the Right have claimed for a long time that government should be run like a business. Donald Trump's son-in-law recently repeated that claim. Government, he said, should be run like "a fine American business." Robin Sears writes that anyone who buys that claim is a dupe: To anyone who has served in government the reasons why this fantasy always ends in tears are obvious. Politics is a profession, and governing successfully requires years of training. Governing is about choice: hard difficult, unpleasant choices. As several presidents have observed, most recentl... more »
"When the Tidal Wave Hits, Part IV"
*"When the Tidal Wave Hits, Part IV" * by Jeff Nielson "The first two parts of this series presented the economic tidal wave that is approaching us and explained how and why we have never been less prepared economically or socially for such a cataclysm. Part III detailed how the economic destruction being wrought upon is deliberate – perpetrated by the banking crime syndicate and condoned by our puppet governments. The third installment also explained how our governments are preparing for what lies ahead. These corrupt regimes (led by the United States) have fabricated their “War o... more »

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 now clearly a government cover-up: All evidence contradicts official story
Yes, the story line is no good, but allows a lot of folks to get on with their lives. The evidence we have is seriously odd. It conforms to really three options. 1] The pilot switched off the transponder. That means he had a serious plan for which we have zero evidence and certainly no plausible confederates. If committing suicide, this is a pretty odd way to do it and leaves a plane full of passengers with cell phones who must be silenced. It is really too big an enterprise for a lone madman. 2] A team attempted to seize control and explosions happened and the fuselage was br... more »
I'm a Married Catholic Priest who thinks Priests Shouldn't get Married with Joshua J. Whitfield
[image: The Whitfield family] This is a different perspective and welcome to the general debate. I am no particular fan of celibacy itself as it happens to put a serious biological burden on young priests during their formative years and that this runs a real risk of driving psychological pathologies best avoided. Yet the demands of the non celibate life includes family and vast tracts of time which likely halts spiritual formation dead in its tracks. I personally think that the priesthood can now be largely drawn from far more mature individuals who have mostly she... more »
Dweller of the Sand Dunes
This is an unusual report because it is remarkably rich in detail and unexpected twists and turns. It is also not the first time we have evidence of an official response team that then becomes secret, begging the obvious question of the integrity of the story teller who is an eye witness. The fact that it all occurred among sand dunes is unusual only because it is unusual. The creature observed would patrol a huge hunting range and the available game brought it out of cover which allowed extensive observation.. . Right off the bat, there is no doubt that this is a giant sloth. ... more »

It is interesting how news stories that have dominated the BBC News website for a day or two suddenly drop down the news agenda. The horrific killing of a young Kurdish-Iranian asylum seeker has been the lead story on the BBC News website for a couple of days and yet, this morning, has dropped to the 'small print' section of the BBC's home page main headlines as their 7th-placed story. Sky News, in contrast, still has it as their second story and ITV has it among their 'large-print' headlines as their 5th-placed story. Another difference between the three broadcasters is that bo... more »

Here Are 5 American Super Weapons 'Stolen' By China
*Kyle Mizokami, National Interest:* *5 American Super Weapons Stolen by China* As China’s military has grown, the country’s military-industrial complex has struggled to keep up with the pace of demands. An arms embargo put in place after the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre shut off the flow of weapons and technology transfers from the high-tech West to China. China’s state-run arms industries have acquired know-how by hook and crook, and occasionally churn out weapon systems that are entirely too similar to American designs to be a coincidence. *Read more* .... *WNU Editor:* Only... more »

Where's your county seat? A modern mathematical method for calculating centers of geography
Peter Rogerson, Professor of Geography, University at Buffalo, The State University of New York at Science + Technology – The Conversation - 1 day ago
Ten states need to move the markers. Nicolas Henderson, CC BY People have long been intrigued by figuring out the center of the places where we live. You’re probably familiar with the concept of center of population. Imagine placing an equal weight at the residential location of each individual; the center of population would be the single point on a map that balances all those weighted spots. The U.S. Census Bureau, for example, produces a map each decade showing the location of the country’s center, summarizing the geographic distribution of the national population.
