“We live together, we act on, and react to, one another; but always and in all circumstances we are by ourselves. The martyrs go hand in hand into the arena; they are crucified alone. Embraced, the lovers desperately try to fuse their insulated ecstasies into a single self-transcendence; in vain. By its very nature every embodied spirit is doomed to suffer and enjoy in solitude. Sensations, feelings, insights, fancies- all these are private and, except through symbols and at second hand, incommunicable. We can pool information about experiences, but never the experiences themselves.... more »

Putin-Gate... Drip, Drip, Drip
Julian Borger reported in yesterday's *Guardian* that way back in December, after Putin was already celebrating his victories in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio and Florida that the British government had already been given the details of how Trump's campaign had been colluding with the Kremlin on stealing the election. This became part of the explosive dossier by former MI6 agent Christopher Steele. The news in Britain wasn't that that the UK intelligence services had also received the dossier but that Steele confirmed in a court filing earlier this month that he handed a... more »
Brazier! ‘Left Turn at Midnight’
When Graham Brazier died nearly two years ago, he’d been working with producer Alan Jansson on his fourth solo album — recording with him every Thursday night across several months. Since his death, Alan Jansson has been continuing to produce the album. A labour of love in every sense, Alan has also *produced* it in virtually every sense: starting with just the raw acoustic tracks they’d originally laid down, he has summoned musicians; enlisted the help of friends and followers; and with the help of Kelly Addis initiated a ‘kickstarter’ (and more) to help complete the great wor... more »

"A Look to the Heavens"
“While hunting for comets in the skies above 18th century France, astronomer Charles Messier diligently kept a list of the things he encountered that were definitely not comets. This is number 27 on his now famous not-a-comet list. In fact, 21st century astronomers would identify it as a planetary nebula, but it's not a planet either, even though it may appear round and planet-like in a small telescope. Messier 27 (M27) is an excellent example of a gaseous emission nebula created as a sun-like star runs out of nuclear fuel in its core. The nebula forms as the star's outer layers are... more »

A good time was had by all, but I couldn't help but think of the events that occurred on those cliffs you see in the background of the photograph, just above the head of the jockey in white. The Poet: Linda Pastan, "What We Want"
*"What We Want" * "What we want is never simple. We move among the things we thought we wanted: a face, a room, an open book and these things bear our names- now they want us. But what we want appears in dreams, wearing disguises. We fall past, holding out our arms and in the morning our arms ache. We don't remember the dream, but the dream remembers us. It is there all day as an animal is there under the table, as the stars are there even in full sun." ~ Linda Pastan, "Carnival Evening"

*"You Are Not Crazy: Taking a Time Out"* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM "Sometimes as adults, we just need a time out to refocus and gather ourselves before starting out again. Most of us feel a little crazy from time to time. Periods of high stress can make us feel like we’re losing it, as can being surrounded by people whose values are very different from our own. We Already Live in a Free Market - Here's Why It's No Utopia (Yet)

Within that free market, a clique of incredibly wealthy, well connected, and well organized individuals have decided to use their freedom to create "governments" they influence, media they control, police who impose by force their will upon populations, a military to either protect their racket or project it beyond their current areas of operation, and all else we associate with "statism." It's all Greek to me
Clytemnestra (Mrs Agamemnon) It should go without saying that the BBC is, despite the bias we mainly focus on here, still capable of producing many a delight and a few fair wonders. My non-work/non-*ITBB *recreation time this week (of which there was quite a bit) included listening, despite myself, to last week's *Drama on 3 *on Radio 3: *Iphigenia in Crimea - *Tony Harrison's gripping take on Euripides's *Iphigenia in Tauris. *I stuck with it and, in the end, thoroughly enjoyed it. Venezuela's Poor Are Now Joining The Protests Against The Government
*VICE News:* *Venezuela's poor are turning on its president and clashing with pro-government militias* CARACAS, Venezuela — Late in the morning on Monday, April 24, protesters gathered on a patch of grass next to a pedestrian bridge in Altamira, in the eastern and wealthier half of Caracas. They were planning the latest march in a series of protests against the government of President Nicolás Maduro that have rocked the faltering country since March 20, when Venezuela’s highest court attempted to dissolve the national assembly in an effort to further weaken Maduro’s opponents. Cosmic Whistleblowers - Simon Sharman
The other day I had the opportunity to watch a documentary by Simon Sharman called *Cosmic Whistleblowers*. You can see a preview, or rather a short trailer about the film, here. http://cosmicwhistleblowers.com/ This is sort of his pursuit of the “Roswell Slides” tale, his discussions with various individuals including some of those who were directly involved in the Roswell crash in some fashion, and with Don Schmitt and Tom Carey who have been investigating it for years. It ends just after the big fiasco in Mexico City and what Tom Carey. Photo copyright by Kevin Randlehe learned a... more »

Have I Got Tigers For You
Just to promote a point made in the comment fields of an earlier thread.... This week's *Have I Got News For You *saw (Establishment lackey) anti-Establishment hero Ian Hislop making a suggestive remark about BBC bias. The first segment had focused its satirical mockery on Labour - which, to my mind, is quite unusual for the programme. Of course, *all* of that mockery focused *personally* on Jeremy Corbyn (which surprised me a good deal less). There then followed a short burst of mockery for Tim Farron over the gay sex thing. And then came the utterly charming mockery of an 8... more »

Books: The good, the bad, and the very ugly...
*with the ugly starting to outweigh the good.* The older I get the less patience I have with books that rely on bad language, over-the-top depictions of sex, and are part of a series - all of which are now in plentiful supply. Reading is one of my greatest pleasures. It has been so since I started reading at about 4 years old. Every week during the summer my mom walked us the mile and a half to the library to restock our book supply. During the winter, weather permitting, we drove there where the very sight of all those books made me quiver with excitement. When I was about 9 y... more »

"Injecting a bit of realism"
Another beauty? And, on a similar front, the following report from Damian Grammaticas on tonight's BBC One early evening news bulletin reported the remaining EU's position whilst framing it in terms of Angela Merkel's talk of British "illusions". Damian then added, without appearing to quote either directly or indirectly, and thus giving the impression that he was 'telling it how he sees it'...: What EU leaders are most worried about is what Angela Merkel has called "illusions" on the British side about what can be achieved in Brexit negotiations. *This process today is about injec... more »
