A Crime Syndicate Head, Foreign Agent, Harridan President?
Hillary Clinton is the worst major party presidential candidate in my lifetime, with the possible exception of Obama. The first election of Obama at least came with a built-in excuse for those of a lame mind and irresponsible nature. Those who make no real effort to learn about the candidate for whom they vote could claim him as an unknown. Of course they could not make the same excuse in 2012. Hillary is a decades long known collectivist, personal power luster, and criminal and crime abettor. She is now known also as the thief of government e-mails, a paid (through the Clinton... more »
Announcement of my interest in becoming US Secretary of Education
Stephen Krashen November 7, 2016. According to the BAT organization's poll, I was one of those mentioned as a possible candidate for the position of Secretary of Education. If appointed, here is some of my platform. Most of the ideas are not my own, and I will supply full documentation if my candidacy develops. Chet Raymo, "Rules For Believing And Thinking"
*"Seven Rules for Believing"* by Chet Raymo "I was reading again recently Richard Dawkins' letter to his daughter Juliet on her tenth birthday, urging her to avoid tradition, authority and revelation as reasons for believing. Ask for evidence, he writes- evidence that is at least potentially available to all. Good advice, and I wouldn't mind passing on Dawkins' letter to my own children or grandchildren. But there is further advice I would add. A week or so ago I proposed here Four Rules of Rational Thinking, and had some savvy comments by readers. Let me now propose Seven Rules of... more »
"It Is Very Strange..."
"Life is a strange thing. Why this longing for life? It is a game which no man wins. To live is to toil hard and to suffer sore, till old age creeps heavily upon us and we throw down our hands on the cold ashes of dead fires. It is hard to live. In pain the babe sucks his first breath, in pain the old man gasps his last, and all his days are full of trouble and sorrow; yet he goes down to the open arms of death, stumbling, falling, with head turned backward, fighting to the last. And death is kind. It is only life and the things of life that hurt. Yet we love life and we hate death... more »

Tomorrow's Notable California Congressional Races-- Some Democrats Aren't Worth Voting For-- And Some Are Fantastic
Tomorrow's the big day here in California. Let me remind you, that all of our endorsements for the 17 statewide propositions are here. There are no Republicans worth voting for anywhere in the state-- not for any office. In the U.S. Senate race, Kamala Harris is a better bet than Blue Dog Loretta Sanchez and in the congressional races, the Democrats I would never consider voting for are corrupt New Dem Ami Bera (who should be in prison instead of his poor fall-guy father), Blue Dog Jim Costa, New Dem Ro Khanna, coked-up New Dem Pete Aguilar, New Dem Isadore Hall, Blue Dog Lou Corr... more »
Latest Polls Show Bernie Sanders Would Win Election By A Landslide
Last minute polling data shows Bernie Sanders would defeat Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump and win the election in a landslide if he was on the ticket. Aggregated data from hundreds of nationwide polls have delivered Clinton and Trump the lowest favorable ratings of presidential candidates since polls began 30 years ago. Clinton’s favorability rating has slumped to 41% among all eligible voters, according to the HuffPost Pollster, while Trump has inched up to 38% in the past week. Sanders meanwhile has surged to his highest favorable rating of the election season. His 54.1% favora... more »
Democratic Electoral College Voters Refuse To Vote Hillary

Fixing the Poison of American Politics - Cleaning Up Redistricting
I'm writing this the night before Election Day in the United States. Once the votes are tallied, a sizable percentage of the population will be convinced that the country is doomed. Cards on the table, I'm definitely a partisan. Though a fairly liberal Republican in my 20s and early 30s, I've transitioned to liberal Democrat. That probably puts me in a minority of people who voted for both Bush and Obama. Basically, as I've grown older I've come to the conclusion that not everybody gets an equal shot and some people have horrible luck - whether in their parents, their genetics, thei... more »

What Cholera Tells Us About Global Health

Commentaries, Analysis, And Editorials -- November 7, 2016
*Albert Hunt, Bloomberg*: *Dismal Campaign Presages a Crisis of Government* One word describes this U.S. presidential election: dismal. That has ominous implications for the important tasks of governing over the next several years. Elections in which big issues are joined have value because they provide a governance agenda to be debated and decided. Election 2016 and Revisiting the New Jim & Juan Crow
As we all know, for probably three-fourths of the electorate ― between women and people of color ― the choice for president should have been a no-brainer. Essentially, the choice was made for us; that’s how many people one candidate intentionally insulted. Along with that, promises by politicians don’t impress. For many, day-to-day issues matter more than slick propaganda. For example, this past semester I taught Michelle Alexander’s “The New Jim Crow.” The topic of her book ― the drug war and the criminalization of people of color, which has wreaked untold havoc on the country ― ... more »

If patriotism were used to do what is best for our country, it would be admirable. But that almost never happens. Instead, patriotism is manipulated to justify the killing and looting of other countries to benefit the very wealthy. That's what empires are all about. I thought of that as I read about Mr. Khan, who is now campaigning for Hillary Clinton. Mr. Khan is the man whose son was an American soldier who was killed in Iraq. The Ring Of Fire reports: Speaking with Bill O’Reilly on Sunday evening, Palin responded to O’Reilly’s assertion that polls show Clinton leading in most key locations. “Like I’ve said before, polls are only good for strippers and cross-country skiers. Was Digby right about the press corps and Trump?
*MONDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2016In search of the media's "narrative:"* Last Thursday morning, the gang on CNN's This Morning were discussing the Trump campaign's strategy for the campaign's final days. Alisyn Camerota played videotape of Trump on the stump. He was telling himself to "stay on point." In response, Chris Cuomo and David Gregory chuckled about it a while. As they did, Cuomo seemed to apologize for the pundit laughter: CAMEROTA (11/3/16): We have a window into Donald Trump's strategy, because he is speaking to himself out loud. Charitable Status Is Key: "100 Who Care" Update
I said back here that I would report on any replies from the "100 Who Care" groups I blogged about. Only one has. And I had a private conversation with a member of another group in Atlantic Canada. The first thing to know: not all groups operate the same way. I got a reply from an organizer of 100 Women Who Care Ottawa, who used only her first name. In my initial email I advised that I would be blogging further on the topic so any responder should consider herself on the record. Since I'm not sure she she understood that, I won't use her name. Quantum mechanics is more beautiful than classical physics
One of the numerous unjustifiable and negative adjectives that Steven Weinberg attached to quantum mechanics in an interview was "ugly". It's ugly when there isn't an objective state of affairs at every moment, we were told. Equivalently, it's ugly when the world doesn't obey the laws of classical physics. The aesthetic discussions are unavoidably subjective to some extent and people's differences cannot be completely settled. Nevertheless, I am confident that his view – and the view of many others who use murky excuses to sling mud on quantum mechanics and its brilliant fathers – i... more »

But the Carl Gustaf stuck around — and for a different role than Abramson and Jentzen had planned in the 1940s. Add in the nearby Minoan world and the Egyptian Delta and we have a tight local shipping culture and real security from the beginning. That same sea culture became global by 2400 BC. FBI Director James Comey has cleared Clinton of all wrong doing over her illegal activities involving classified emails, despite the fact that agents say they have enough evidence to indict her. Paulo Coelho, “Change and Renewal”
*“Change and Renewal”* by Paulo Coelho “When winter arrives, the trees must sigh in sadness as they see their leaves falling. They say: ‘We will never be like we were before.’ Of course. Or still, what is the meaning of renewing oneself? The next leaves will have their own nature, they pertain to a new summer that approaches and which will never be like the one that passed. Living means changing– and the seasons repeat these lessons to us every year. Changing means going through a period of depression: we still don’t know the new and we have to forget everything we used to know. Bu... more »
