TEPCO Externalizes Costs - Japan Taxpayers Pay for Fukushima Disaster
The Fukushima accident was catastrophic and the costs are being externalized, although TEPCO (and GE) bear direct responsibility for the disaster. In north east Honshu, property owned by generations of families was devalued or made uninhabitable by the Fukushima nuclear disaster. As of December 2014, six municipalities contaminated by the March 2011 explosions remain closed because of radiation contamination and more than 120,000 people are still living in temporary shelters, many of which are located in areas with radiation hot spots exceeding the standard of 5 millisieverts a yea... more »
How Turkey 'Played' The EU Over The Migrant Crisis
*Matthew karnitschnig, Politico:* *How Turkey held the EU for ransom* Accepting the Turkish terms on migration raise fears of a dangerous precedent Shopping in a Turkish bazaar is never wise for the novice. The EU learned that lesson the hard way when it discovered the carefully crafted refugee deal it believed it had sold to Turkish leaders in the run-up to Monday’s summit turned out to be little more than the beginning of the negotiation. Turkey made Europe a counter offer early Monday that six months ago would have prompted EU negotiators to get up and walk out. To European ey... more »
DSCC Wants To Shove A Republican Lite Corporate Shill Down The Throats Of Iowa Democrats
With hyper-partisan Republican obstructionism kicked up into full gear, several Senate incumbents who looked relatively safe, no longer are. Most Americans want the Republicans to go through the process of giving the president their advice and consent on his Supreme Court nomination rather than just declaring that they will not-- under any circumstances-- even consider *anyone* he nominates. And no incumbent previously deemed "safe" by the insiders is more likely to feel the sting of public anger on that than 82-year old Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa. Only a Communist Would Hide Behind a Mask - Superheroes During the Red Scare
I'm currently working my way through James Patterson's *Grand Expectations*, covering the history of the United States from the end of World War II and Watergate. Currently I'm in the 1952 presidential election, though the book isn't 100% sequential - for example, it covered the end of the Korean War before diving into the 1952 election. One thing I'm finding fascinating is the multiple facets of American life in the late 1940s and early 1950s. On the one hand, we see the United States enjoying prosperity which, to our eyes, is hard to believe. But that assumes you were white. A... more »

Paul Craig Roberts - The Financial System Is A Larger Threat Than Terrorism
*An excerpt from, "The Financial System Is A Larger Threat Than Terrorism" by Paul Craig Roberts, March 8, 2016:* Throughout the Western world the financial system has become an exploiter of the people and a deadweight loss on economies. There are only two possible solutions. One is to break the large banks up into smaller and local entities such as existed prior to the concentration that deregulation fostered. The other is to nationalize them and operate them solely in the interest of the general welfare of the population. The banks are too powerful currently for either solution to... more »

This one is relatively small time because Canadian involvement amounts to just $30,000,000 or so. But there are many such banks, and their holdings are in uncounted billions. Two Books I'm Reading
A friend hepped me to *The Devil in the White City* by Eric Larson. It's about the building of the Chicago World's Fair in 1893; and Larson shows how it was a snap-shot of the times. For instance; the world's first Ferris Wheel was designed for it as US-American engineers' response to the Eiffel Tower that wowed the world at the Paris World's Fair of 1889. Also, while I've read fairly extensively about the Pullman Strike of 1894, I'd never thought about how the drawing of thousands of workers and craftsmen to build the Fair in 1892-93 contributed to the pressures that made the strike... more »

Glyphosate Ruining Your Gut And Triggering Autoimmune Disease
I was subjected to the fundamental lie about Roundup in 1964 or there abouts. We carefully read the label and took the chemical back unopened. Apparently the legal double talk warned my father not to trust Monsanto at all. This was the only time we actually rejected a chemical. It now turns out that this chemical is profoundly problematic and that is added to recent reckless behavior in the promotion of the product itself to goose the sales volume. dream - Dream School - Modular Dorm Orphanage
*it felt like this...*there wasn't a straight line in the place. It was either a VERY EXCLUSIVE country private school or it was a buried school underground or it was a floating school in deep space... I can't be sure which as the dream (for the purposes of vivid recollection) started during a School Play. But it was no ordinary school play, nor no ordinary school stage. It was all hydraulic, or was moving in some way. The play might have been about being on a boat or ship and the waves were rocking the boat, and/or only the seats were moving, or both. When Bernie Was Growing Up Congress Had An Amazing Congressman, A Democratic Socialist From Harlem Named Vito Marcantonio
Yesterday Little Marco triumphed in the Republican primary in Puerto Rico. Although only 36,393 people voted, he won an impressive 73.8% and all 23 delegates, despite being the self-appointied senatorial spokesperson against Puerto Rican bankruptcy in the name of robotic Austerity. He probably won because he was the only Republican who campaigned there and because, unlike Cruz, he's somewhat popular among Hispanics. Rubio is anything *but* a champion of Puerto Ricans. The last Member of Congress who really was, was a Democratic Socialist from Harlem named Vito Marcantonio, one of... more »

Wind power, flattened mountain ridges, collapsed towers

"Just Once..."
"But because truly being here is so much; because everything here apparently needs us, this fleeting world, which in some strange way keeps calling to us. Us, the most fleeting of all. But to have been this once, completely, even if only once: to have been at one with the earth, seems beyond undoing." - Rainer Maria Rilke
