Eels in Myth and Solar cycles
[image: Chung_46_29] *Looking forward to roads like this soooonnnnn...* From Eels and Humans, Tsukamoto and Kuroki (Eds.) Freshwater eels (Anguilla spp.) are an important food resource and support large-scale aquaculture in some oriental countries. Taiwan’s climate is ideal for eel stocks living in the wild and for aquaculture. Indeed, the country’s aquaculture industry, which was initiated in the 1960s and peaked in the early 1990s, contributed greatly to Taiwan’s economic development at the time, though much of that production has since been transferred to mainland China. "Be Curious..."
"Children, be curious. Nothing is worse (I know it) than when curiosity stops. Nothing is more repressive than the repression of curiosity. Curiosity begets love. It weds us to the world. If Fracking Causes Earthquakes And Politicians Take Bribes To Approve Fracking In Earthquake Zones.. What Then?
The map above is from *National Geographic* and it shows the likelihood of human-induced earthquakes for 2016. That's not a way of tracking a team of obese volleyball players. It's all about fracking. Anyone even tangentially involved with allowing fracking in California should be subject to the... severe punishment, especially if they've accepted money from Oil and Gas interests, in return for their acquiescence, the way Governor Jerry Brown and oily state Senators Ricardo Lara and Isadore Hall have. Trump and Clinton: Censoring the Unpalatable

The Poet: Rainer Maria Rilke, "And Yet..."
"And yet, though we strain against the deadening grip of daily necessity, I sense there is this mystery: All life is being lived. Who is living it then? Is it the things themselves, or something waiting inside them, like an unplayed melody in a flute? Is it the winds blowing over the waters? Is it the branches that signal to each other? Is it flowers interweaving their fragrances or streets, as they wind through time?" ~ Rainer Maria Rilke

Is It Fair To Blame The Disintegration Of The Republican Brand On Trumpy The Clown?
Right-wing nut Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) made an interesting observation on Twitter yesterday. He reminded his 4,000 followers that Trump is a disaster and can't even poll above the Republican registration in California. He was referring to the new USC/*L.A. Times* poll that shows Hillary beating Trump in a head-to-head 59-28%. Not only is Trump failing to make any headway among Democrats or Independents, he's likely not even locking up Republicans! Both McCain and Romney took 37% of the vote and even the weak 2014 Republican gubernatorial candidate, Neel Kashkari, won 40%. And remem... more »

"Cherish your doubts, for doubt is the handmaiden of truth. Doubt is the key to the door of knowledge; it is the servant of discovery. Quentin Letts's "hunky" Tom Heap Like Quentin Letts of *The Daily Mail, *I do like a bit of *Countryfile *on a Sunday night. I really do. So I didn't really want to go to town on *Countryfile *regular Tom Heap over his pro-EU-biased *Costing the Earth *edition on the possible consequences for the environment of a British exit from the EU... Anna Holligan There's something I heard on Radio 4 the other day that's been worrying me. I'm not a foreign reporter and I can only guess how foreign reporters might feel when confronted with something harrowing, but I've also become deeply cynical when a BBC reporter seems to be using something harrowing to make a point. I was listening to this week's *Sunday *on Radio 4 and heard BBC reporter Anna Holligan being interviewed about the terrorist attacks in Brussels. As the discussion neared its close she began spontaneously talking about an experience she'd had this past week. S... more »

NATO Warns Europe To Prepare For War With Russia
NATO’s top commander has warned Europe to beef up its air defenses over the Baltics in anticipation of a Russian invasion. Tensions between NATO and Moscow has gradually worsened since the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation on 18 March 2014. Currently there are just eight jets patrolling the skies over the Baltics and NATO commanders think that the numbers are not sufficient to deter a Russian attack in Europe. The alliance is asking its European allies to prepare as a deterrence against a possible conflict, even though the preparation itself might be construed as an aggr... more »
California To Delay BPA & Chemical Warnings On Canned Food

The state argues that stores and shoppers in lower-income areas may be scared away from tinned food which for some is the only available source of fruits and vegetables California officials are worried that ultra-specific labels warning about BPA and other poisonous chemicals placed on metal cans may cause many to run the other way. But there’s one thing that the BBC hasn’t reported that I think is worth mentioning, because it’s in the Times, the Independent and the Express. Not that that’s a very good reason, but it concerns the Labour party and antisemitism, topics I think the BBC is interested in, especially if it can find a way to sensationalise them. Like, putting it on The Big Questions. Having it on the Daily Politics. Getting Laura Kuenssberg to tell us what to think about it. The Express has: *Labour rocked by antisemitic... more »

Disheartened By the Choices for President? Take Heart. Your Other Country Is a Grand Monarchy

Balkanising Syria is Not Plan B, it's Plan A
*March 29, 2016* (Maram Susli - NEO) - Last month, US secretary of State John Kerry called for Syria to be partitioned saying it was “Plan B” if negotiations fail. But in reality this was always plan A. Plans to balkanize Syria, Iraq and other Middle Eastern states were laid out by former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in a 2006 trip to Tel Aviv. It was part of the so called “Project For a New Middle East”. This was a carbon copy of the Odid Yinon plan drawn up by Israel in 1982. Surviving on the Battlefield in the Information War
*March 29, 2016* (Tony Cartalucci - NEO) - There is undoubtedly an information war raging. There are intentional liars, people who witlessly repeat these lies, poor research, and opinions spun to look as if it is research. To sort the ever increasing amount of information from disinformation, there are a few simple methods people can use. But above all, people must personally dedicate themselves to following the truth no matter where it brings them, having the courage to accept a reality that may not necessarily mesh with their current perception. Party of the Death Penalty
*The Ruiguang Industry road, one of the prettiest in Taiwan.* The horrific murder of a four year old girl in front of her mother two days ago has once again brought the death penalty to the fore. The poor child was beheaded in a senseless, entirely random act of violence by a mentally ill man. This was followed by two more apparently random attacks (FocusTw). How False Memory Changes What Happened Yesterday
This is truly interesting. I have been working on the conjecture that our p rocessor establishes memories by leaping back in time to the event itself and then experiencing the event a second time. Let us call these true memories. Their interpretation may change but the core should remain constant. I do think memory interpretation is way more important not least because it is happening in the background unseen. I also suspect that we also train our minds to dismiss memories as unimportant. These naturally create windows into which an imagined memory can be c... more »

The money is now huge, the quality is plunging and unethical practice is natural as human nature takes its course. In this case the FDA did their job but the company chose to ignore all that and sold around the restri... more »

Friend - You have to see this "Wall Street Journal" headline from late last week: "Hillary Clinton Begins Shift to the General Election" Unfortunately for the Clinton campaign's plans, voters got in the way. We've won six of the last seven contests, and took 82% of the vote in Alaska, 73% in Washington, and 70% in Hawaii. Here’s the truth: the Clinton campaign and their allies in
Study Finds Scented Candles Are Dangerous To Human Health
New studies suggest that scented candles pose a major risk to human health – and researchers have warned that breathing in the toxic fumes from these household products is more dangerous than smoking a packet of cigarettes. As reported in The Daily Mail, scented candles, aerosols, gels and plug-in air fresheners change the structure of our DNA due to the industrial chemicals contained within – increasing the risk of lung damage, tumors, hormonal damage, asthma, and birth defects. All of these products contain industrial chemicals which can, among other things, transform the structur... more »

*Financial Times:* *Saudi Arabia loses oil market share to rivals in key nations* World’s largest oil exporter suffers setback amid low prices Saudi Arabia lost market share in more than half of the most important countries it sold crude to in the past three years, even as the kingdom increased output to record levels. The world’s biggest oil exporter lost ground to rivals in nine out of 15 top markets between 2013 and 2015, including China, South Africa and the US, according to an analysis of customs data. Saudi Arabia set itself a goal in late 2014 of maintaining its crude mark... more »
Who Really Discovered America?
Here is another writer tackling our favorite vexing question. The loss of Atlantis created a huge hole in human history that has been heavily discounted when what is properly called for is some overstatement. Most scholarship has relegated Atlantis to a mere lost city not much bigger than Bronze Age Minos. The evidence to hand argues for a global progenitor civilization or culture centered safely on Islands in particular comparable to the similar British Empire. During the Bronze Age, land based empires were difficult to establish and sustain. This actually remained lar... more »

Can North Korea Actually Detonate A Nuclear Device On U.S. Soil?
REUTERS/KCNA *Gordon G. Chang, Daily Beast:* *North Koreans Just Threatened to Nuke D.C.—And They Can Actually Do It* Pyongyang put out a video suggesting the strike would come from a submarine. More likely: in a suitcase. On Friday, a North Korean propaganda outlet released a four-minute video showing an American flag in flames—and a submarine-launched warhead detonating near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. “If the American imperialists provoke us a bit, we will not hesitate to slap them with a pre-emptive nuclear strike,” the video’s Korean-language subtitles said. “T... more »

Not All Countries Freak Out About Healthy Eating Alternatives-- Take Holland
I'm thinking about going to Paris this summer. What I'd like to do is rent a house or an apartment in the city and then take a side-trip to Bordeaux, Périgueux, Limoges and the Dordogne Valley to see the caves in the region. It's the only part of France I've never visited and friends tell me it's not-to-be-missed. But Roland wants to visit Amsterdam. He loves Amsterdam-- and especially our friends there-- but I lived there for 4 years and visiting someplace you know in such a workaday way isn't really a vacation. And, after all, no place is as good as it used to be, right? I lived... more »

Donald Trump: Japan And South Korea Could Have Their Own Nuclear Weapons
*Voice of America*: *Trump’s Asia Security Criticisms Set Off Talk of Nuclear Arms Race* SEOUL—Donald Trump, the front-running U.S. presidential candidate for the Republican Party, is not winning a lot of friends among America’s key allies in Asia after criticizing their contributions to regional security and suggesting they develop their own nuclear arsenals. In an interview with The New York Times, the Republican front-runner called for a complete reassessment of longstanding U.S. security pacts with Japan and South Korea. Trump has in the past criticized both Asian allies as “... more »
CIA-Backed Syrian Rebels Are Not Really Fighting Pentagon-Backed Syrian Rebels
Photo credit: Kurdishstruggle *Sam Heller, War On The Rocks*: *Are CIA-Backed Syrian Rebels Really Fighting Pentagon-Backed Syrian Rebels?* The Los Angeles Times’ contention Sunday that “in Syria, militias armed by the Pentagon fight those armed by the CIA” is basically incorrect. This is complicated, but bear with me. The Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are not a monolithic force. Like nearly every other faction in Syria, they’re spread across an archipelago of enclaves nationwide. The SDF units clashing with Syrian rebels reportedly supported by the CIA are not ... more »

According to the United Nations Human Rights Council, it has committed “the crimes against humanity of extermination; murder; rape or other forms of sexual violence; torture; imprisonment; enforced disappearance and other inhuman acts.” Assad is responsible for the lion’s share of the violence, but criminal and auth... more »
The Question of Quantum

Journalists Preparing Report Outlining Russian President Putin's Wealth And Connections
Kremlin Press Service *Fiscal Times*:* Putin Plays Defense in Advance of Corruption Report* The Kremlin on Monday took the unusual step of issuing a sort of “pre-buttal” in advance of the publication of an international group of investigative journalists’ report on the personal finances of Russian President Vladimir Putin, his family, and close friends. Putin spokesperson Dimitry Peskov said the Kremlin has received a set of questions from reporters leading the Putin administration to believe that “another media falsehood disguised as a sample of objectivity is due within days.” ... more »
