The “legal high’ regime was always bound to fail, so it’s hard to mourn its
passing.
Over its short life, the regime made illegal the sale of a drug that *Lancet

of increasing harm.
This makes no sense.
The tragedy is that the end of this regime does nothing to bring the end of
drug consumption, so folk currently consuming these harmful legal highs
will be thrown on the mercies of gangsters and criminals selling illegal
drugs of dubious quality.
Why so? Because however much the War-On-Drugsters think other... more »

Ugly old fat Donald Sterling who wears a rat on his head is a racist?...

I just had the unpleasant experience of listening to Sean Hannity display
very little outrage over the alleged anti-black comments of the Clippers

Doesn't take long to figure this one out. Hannity was a supporter of

HEDGES ON THE MEDIA WAR
The crisis in Ukraine and the steadily dropping temperature in relations

others are worried it may turn 'hot'. But there's another war going on

US Secretary of State Kerry has already attacked RT, calling it "Putin's

facts. What is the information war? What methods is America using?

Lump sum spousal support
Racco v. Racco, 2014 ONCA 330:
[31] This was an appropriate case for a lump sum payment. The
appellant has an ability to pay. There was a high level of animosity
between the parties, a history of non-payment by the appellant, the
possibility that the appellant's financial situation would continue to be
precarious, the desirability of terminating personal contact, the need to
effect a retroactive award of support and the need to provide capital to
the respondent. These factors support a lump sum award. It was for the

R. v. Karimi, 2014 ONCA 320:

[24] Again we disagree. As this court pointed out in *R. v. H.A.*,
[2005] O.J. No. 3777, the context must be considered in determining whether
an otherwise apparently lawful threat (i.e., to call police) constitutes an
extortive threat. A threat to call the police unless the complainants gave

appellant knew the complainants had not stolen... more »

Tornado Op-Ed in the WSJ
I've got an op-ed in today's WSJ. Here is an excerpt:
What we can say with some certainty is that the number of years with very
large tornado losses has actually decreased. Consider that from 1950 to
1970 the U.S. saw 15 years with tornado damage in excess of $5 billion a
year. From 1993 to 2013 there were only four such years, with three since
2008.

data on which the op-ed is based can be found here.

The indigenously developed interceptor missile was fired from Wheeler

*Germany's Vice Chancellor Stuns, Declares Germany’s Green energy

The green energy orgy in Germany is over. The music has stopped and the
wine that once flowed freely has long run out. The green energy whores and

In a stunning admission by Germany’s Economics Minister and Vice Chancellor

U.S.-Philippines Pact Could Boost Arms Sales
[image: P-8A Poseidon]A new 10-year security pact between the United States

The agreement, to be signed on Monday, establishes a framework for an

"rebalancing" of U.S. resources toward the fast-growing Asia-Pacific region.

Academic Parenting 101: parental leave erosion
Academics are generally pretty lucky when it comes to parental leave- at

Canadians are forever being informed, explicitly or implicitly, that the
solution to the crisis of the day, or decade, is a freedom-sounding word
called “privatization”. This, the free-marketeers tell us, will solve our

The reality is invariably the opposite. “Privatization” -- also known as
bailed-out, highly subsidized corporatism – is in fact the problem, not the
solution.
Furthermore, the crises being addressed are often manufactured for the
express purpose of rolling out a parasitical regime of corporatization that

Greece Updates April 27 , 2014 -- Concerning Greece fiscal condition whether the so called primary budget surplus is allegedly 3.4 billion ( or is it 1.5 billion as per Troika calculations ) , just note the Greek debt sinkhole is now at 175 percent of GDP ! Other items of note , present FM Stournaras scurrrying away from the frontlines to run the bank of Greece after May Election for European Parliament and Local Authority Elections - smart move ...... Pasok finances a tad shady ( shocking , now let's look at New Democracy ) ....... Hmm , thought there would absolutely be no further needs for austerity measures , thought Greece was doing so well as per the EU ----- Takeaway - The European Commission may hail the “Greek progress” in its April 2014 review of the second Economic Adjustment Programme for Greece. The EC may hail the primary surplus and the structural reforms. However at the same time it stresses the need for additional austerity measures totaling 7.7 billion euro for the years 2-15-2017....... Greece 2021 ( why not 2031 ?? ) ---- Greece got a plan. A growth and development plan with the futuristic title “Greece 2021″, that is seven years from now. The plan was submitted by Finance Minister Yiannis Stournaras to Euro Working Group on Thursday in Brussels in the context with the Greek debt relief request. Here is to note that the development plan is the first after Greece sought the aid of the International Monetary Fund in 2010.

April 27: Another step back....
This will probably be just a short note. It bothers me I was not more
critical of Gwynne Dyer, yesterday.
He was commenting on the Ukrainian crisis - and rather dismissive of it.
They were just, he said, replaying the old strategic game, probably to
later include China. But nothing much with relation to China is likely to
happen for thirty years. So why worry?
Russia cannot invade the US; it can't match the US for military spending;
any damage it could do to the US is bearable; So why worry?
The trouble with all that reasoning is that thirty years is not a long
time; Russia has l... more »

After the Hank Aaron backlash, Cliven Bundy and now Donald Sterling,
it makes me realize that maybe Dr. King's legacy was ultimately a failure
and we're just one Act of Congress away from nationwide racial apartheid
that the Koch brothers, ALEC and the state Senate had already seriously considered
implementing in one North Carolina school district.
And, as if that wasn't enough to sour you on this country of ours,

Lin I-hsiung could not be permitted to die.

Reply to an Idiot
I've been too busy to be able to write a post about Elections Canada's

something about how mindless it is to refer to the Ukraine Crisis as the

Reflexively calling it a "Cold War" lulls people into thinking that it will

Perhaps It's Just Stupidity
In at least one way, Stephen Harper is absolutely consistent: He is the
author of his own misery. That was apparent in 2008, when he almost brought

And, Robert Asselin writes, it was apparent when Barack Obama decided to

'The airport's risky reputation arises from the airport's physical
