10:24pm MDSTThe Death of Democracy in Canada. The Death of James Michael Flaherty
*The Death of Democracy in Canada. The Death of James Michael Flaherty* Written by Robin Mathews For the Canadians increasingly convinced that all conventional politicians are betraying Canadian democracy, the death of James Michael Flaherty underscores their position. The response to his death by federal (and other) parliamentarians and politicians says it all. The praise of a major actor in the betrayal and deception of Canada and of all Canadians reaches across the parties in the House of Commons (and across the country) without interruption. Let us not confuse respect ... more »
Disenfranchising America-- What Is Obama Going To Do About It? BONUS: The Gay Agenda Revealed
It's not exactly news-- at least not to anyone who reads *DWT*-- but Friday, President Obama accused the Republicans of undermining democracy by pushing disenfranchisement legislation in several states where they have managed to win control. He came right out and accused them of reacting to a fake problem with a blatantly political tactic. That's pretty heavy stuff coming from a POTUS. And, at least in my book, that makes him obligated to do something about it. If he wants to acknowledge that the GOP is "trying to rig the elections by making it harder for older people, women, minor... more »

Funny anecdote on the edTPA
I see a few folks here and there starting to talk more about the Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA), or the Pearson product that will now be used to score and certify student teachers. I scored some of these things. Painfully mediocre stuff. Here’s a quick note about my experience that I shared with some others […]
MH370 staged Crash Scene - a remake of the 2004 Boxing Day Indian Ocean Tsunami USS San Francisco Crash
~ Amin In the light of the staged MH370 crash scene in the Indian Ocean, thousands of miles away from the real crash scene in South China Sea, is history repeating itself? Judge for yourself. Could the “grounding and high speed head-on collision” involving the USS San Francisco be another stage play like the 2Aug 1964 Gulf of Tonkin (USS Maddox Incident) incident which gave President Lyndon Johnson the excuse to escalate the Vietnam war; to bomb Vietnam back to the “stone ages”? Forty years after the Nam War, many will agree it was another senseless war with sinister selfish agend...more »
Blowback question of the day: Are teachers also ceding control of their profession to parents?
I may get blowback for this one, so here goes: is the relative apathy of teachers, and the myopic ignorance of the larger political realities affecting education, forcing them to cede control of the activist narrative to parents? I am part of many activist groups, passively and otherwise. Many of these groups are led by […]

Yes Another Earth-Shaking Republican Scandal In Wisconsin
You probably read yesterday that Tom Petri (R-WI) will be formally announcing on Monday that he will be retiring from Congress at the end of this year. He just doesn't have it in him to fight off right-wing extremist Glenn Grothman, the union-hating kook who wants to abolish weekends. Grothman doesn't live in Petri's district, but part of his own state senatorial district is part of WI-06, Petri's district. Another state Senate seat that makes up part of WI-06 is the 19th district, currently held by another Republican extremist, Senate President Michael Ellis. He represents parts... more »

The Wayshowers Shoes
There is not much sense in living out the days ahead as if all that matters is the physical existence you know now. All of this can and will change as the evolution of the species takes place. These changes to the physical you are a process that takes place gradually and all at once. You are not the same human of a year ago and won’t be in a year’s time. Exiting the Common Core Memorandum of Understanding
In October 2013, I wrote a post examining the details of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) memorandum of understanding (MOU), the agreement that state governors and state education superintendents signed with the US Department of Education (USDOE) in which “states” agreed to be “state led” in developing “common standards” according to the criteria set forth in […]
April 12:When the real headline is the bottom line.
There's a curious story that gets a banner headline on page of today's TandT. "B.B changes handling of young offenders" It tells how young offenders have been held in open custody homes in or within reach of their communities. It also says these have been quite successful. But now it is moving to a quite remote facility. The province's child and youth advocate says it doesn't sound like a good idea, and he'd like to hear what the motivation is. He points out that such a remote ,"closed" custody is contrary to the advice of the law, itself. As I read the story, I grew impatient with ... more »
"2014 is shaping up as a year of reckoning for the United States. One of two things will happen: Either the US dollar will be abandoned and collapse in value, thus ending Washington's superpower status and Washington's threat to world peace, or Washington will lead its puppets into military conflict with Russia and China. The outcome of such a war would be far more devastating than the collapse of the US dollar." -- Paul Craig Roberts

Interesting thought: Are the corporate reformers lamenting Colbert’s move to the Late Show?

France in 2014, will it be the UK in 2016?
Will Ed Miliband become the British Francois François Hollande? I think it's quite likely, after all in 2012 we were told that Ed Miliband had agreed to work with the new Socialist President of France to “tilt” Europe away from austerity. How'd that work out? France marooned with high taxation and a stagnant economy - just what you'd expect with a Socialist government. Meanwhile the UK has, relatively, lower taxation, much better growth and if it wasn't for the Lib Dems and a liberal Prime Minister the situation could be even better.

The Vapid Party
Conservatives, Andrew Coyne writes, believe in absolutes and reject moral relativism: Conservatives at their best disdain the lazy moral relativism that passes for sophistication in some corners of the left. There are such things as right and wrong, they insist, not right for some and wrong for others. Some absolutes remain. And, in a democracy, there are still a few absolutes: Ideas previously accepted as axiomatic — that everyone has a right to vote, that those who don’t vote should be encouraged to, that public confidence in elections should not be undermined nor the inte... more »

The city is doubly valuable for rebel factions, as it is both a source of oil revenue for its occupier and has a border with Iraq’s Anbar Province, a particularly big incentive for AQI, which presently controls much of Anbar as well.... more »

The Poet: Rainer Maria Rilke, "And Yet..."
"And yet, though we strain against the deadening grip of daily necessity, I sense there is this mystery: All life is being lived. Who is living it then? Is it the things themselves, or something waiting inside them, like an unplayed melody in a flute? Is it the winds blowing over the waters? Is it the branches that signal to each other? Is it flowers interweaving their fragrances or streets, as they wind through time?" ~ Rainer Maria Rilke
TV Watch: Two excellent things about CBS's choice of Stephen Colbert to succeed David Letterman
*Rush asks over and over, do we really care what he thinks about it? Great point, Rush! Who in his right mind could possibly care? Except for the fact that you've got still got a lot of people listening to you who aren't in their right mind.* *by Ken* It really seems as if some note should be taken of the news that Stephen Colbert has been named to succeed David Letterman as host of CBS's *Late Show* -- at some date to be determined next year after Dave finally packs it in. Two things occur to me -- both good, let me hasten to say. I'm certainly not claiming that they're profound... more »
Judicial independence for justices of the peace
The Justices of the Peace Review Council in re EM released a decision this evening saying: 26. Judicial independence for justices of the peace was considered in the Supreme Court of Canada decision of Ell v. Alberta. Justice Major, writing for the Court, held that the principle of judicial independence applies to justices of the peace as it does to all other judicial officers (see para 17). The Court also provided historical context for judicial independence in para 21: The historical rationale for independence was to ensure that judges, as the arbiters of disputes, are at comple... more »
"The Paradox of Our Time"
Dr. Bob Moorehead, "The Paradox of Our Time" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=181B7yainqY ◆ *"The Paradox of Our Time"* “The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings, but shorter tempers; wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less; we buy more, but enjoy it less. We have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences, but less time; we have more degrees, but less sense; more knowledge, but less judgment; more experts, but more problems; more medicine, but less wellness. We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly,... more »
"For This Is What We Do..."
"For this is what we do. Put one foot forward and then the other. Lift our eyes to the snarl and smile of the world once more. Think. Act. Feel. Add our little consequence to the tides of good and evil that flood and drain the world. Drag our shadowed crosses into the hope of another night. Push our brave hearts into the promise of a new day. With love: the passionate search for a truth other than our own. With longing: the pure, ineffable yearning to be saved. For so long as fate keeps waiting, we live on. God help us. God forgive us. We live on." - Gregory David Roberts, “Shantara... more »
Chet Raymo, “Cranes or Skyhooks?”
*“Cranes or Skyhooks?”* by Chet Raymo “In the late 19th century, an intractable problem bedeviled scientists. Geologists had convincingly demonstrated that the Earth was hundreds of millions of years old, and fossil evidence suggested that life had been around for most of that time. Which means the Sun must have been burning more or less steadily throughout the duration. Yet physicists and chemists could not provide any credible source of energy that would keep the Sun shining for all that time. Not gravitational contraction. Not chemical combustion or any other known chemical reac... more »
Paulo Coelho, "Solitude..."
*“Solitude Is Not The Absence of Love”* by Paulo Coelho “Without solitude, Love will not stay long by your side, because Love needs to rest as well, so that it can journey through the heavens and reveal itself in other forms. Without solitude, no plant or animal can survive, no soil can remain productive for any length of time, no child can learn about life, no artist can create, no work can grow and be transformed. Solitude is not the absence of Love, but its complement. Solitude is not the absence of company, but the moment when our soul is free to speak to us and help us decide ... more »

The Economy:"The Fed's Childishly Naïve Theory of Credit”
*"The Fed's Childishly Naïve Theory of Credit”* by Bill Bonner Gualfin, Argentina. “Today, we return to familiar territory. We have seen it before: The slowdown in the economy. The overpricing of assets (particularly stocks). The huge increase in debt. The Fed's QE and ZIRP. But for all its familiarity, it remains strange... and mysterious. Let's backtrack... The foundation for today's peculiar economy was laid in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1968, President Johnson asked Congress to end the requirement that US dollars be backed by gold. Then in 1971, President Nixon issued Executive O... more »

'Woman's Hour is not for me'
To mark the passing of Richard Hoggart, who was partial to a bit of poetry, I thought I'd express my feelings about a particular BBC programme in verse: *Woman's Hou*r is not for me, In spite of stats I heard today, For - by per cent - we're 43, Us men, Of those who tune to Jane and Jen - Or so I heard Ms Garvey say, On *Feedback*, now, this very day. This morning's edition of *Woman's Hour *had four items on its agenda, not one of which fired me with any great urge to listen to it: (1) some hand-wringing about the lack of racial diversity in children's books, (2) a call for men ... more »
