Samhara Kali by Raja Ravi Varma Swami Vivekananda wrote his poem Kali The Mother, on 24 September 1898, while he was staying in Srinagar, in a houseboat on Dal Lake. The poem is a prayer to Goddess Kali (the ferocious form of Mahakali), the ultimate deity of Shaktism, the mother of all living beings, and the Goddess of power, time, and the destruction of demonic forces. Vivekananda became a worshipper of Kali in 1886, after the death of his guru Ramakrishna Paramahansa.
