Clues about the election outcomes
Maybe some clues about the election results. I was listening to Matt Walsh last night and he had some interesting statistics about Gen-Z--both that generation and their lifestyles and voting patterns (born 1996-2015). Overwhelmingly, they voted Democrat--huge spread from other generations. Only 45% of Gen Z report having good mental health--many suffer from anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, Bi-polar, etc. and a high percentage have seen a professional or take medication. From Catholics to Lutherans to Bible Only churches, Gen-Z is turned off--but they are instead opting for pantheis... read more

The not-so-lame duck session
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi talks with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer during the Moms Demand Action Gun Violence Rally on June 8, 2022, in Washington, DC. | Nathan Howard/Getty Images Democrats are eyeing votes on same-sex marriage protections and electoral reforms. Though several races remain uncalled, it appears Republicans will likely gain control of the House. And that means the next two months — also known as the lame-duck session — could well be Democrats’ last chance to use their unified control of Congress. For the Balkinization Symposium on Andrew Koppelman, Burning Down the House: How Libertarian Philosophy Was Corrupted by Delusion and Greed (St. Martin’s Press, 2022). James Hackney *Burning Down the House* serves the noble purpose of putting the analysis of political theory to work in helping us better think through our contemporary political morass. It also invites us to think afresh about the implications of political theory. Provocatively, Andrew Koppelman tells us: “I’m going to try to persuade leftists and libertarians that your ideals are not so far from each other as yo... read more

Commentary by Finian Cunningham In a wide-ranging interview with Finian Cunningham, former US military intelligence analyst Scott Ritter calls out a complex of American-made problems threatening world peace. The Ukraine war is just one symptom of a bigger disease. The war in Ukraine began with the 2014 US-backed coup d’état in Kiev and the weaponizing by the United States and NATO of an anti-Russian regime over eight years. “Absurd disconnect” in US foreign policy, “extraordinary provocations” toward Russia, the “scam” of nuclear weapons and US military defense doctrine, and ... read more

Can China Escape the Innovation Trap?
Chinese President Xi Jinping arrives at COP21 (Photo by COP PARIS, bit.ly/3O9MDLh; CC0 1.0, https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/) For most foreign observers, the biggest takeaway from China’s recently completed 20th Party Congress is likely that Chinese President and Communist Party Secretary Xi Jinping is tightening his grip on the world’s most populous country. But on closer inspection, the vision Xi put forward for China’s future in a headline speech to the Party Congress is a bundle of contradictions: liberal and reform-minded in some areas, bracingly authoritari... read more

Donald Trump will probably announce his third run for the presidency today. And therein lies a mystery. Paul Krugman writes: Let’s talk instead about how remarkable it is that someone like Trump managed to dominate one of America’s two major political parties and surely retains a substantial base. I’m not talking about the fact that Trump holds what I consider reprehensible policy views or even the fact that he engaged in several acts, including an attempt to overturn a national election, that can reasonably be described as seditious.
