Taxonomy of Education Disruptors (2022 Edition)
First of all, I wish we could retire the term "reformers" as a catch-all, because it's no longer truly applicable. Much of what reformsters pushed is now status quo (e.g. high stakes testing), which means that I'm technically an advocate for education reform. Meanwhile, many folks whose predecessors were ed reformsters are no longer claiming that mantle. The world of ed reform was never a uniform unified whole. Alliances between folks with different aims, folks with different styles of advocacy, even alliances between unprincipled opportunists and sincere true believers have always... read more
Early Coal Retirement: How about a Global Auction
WASHINGTON DC, Nov 02 (IPS) - Report after report highlights that we can only achieve the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions required by the climate goals of the Paris Agreement if much of the existing coal power generation capacity is retired early. To this end, one concept that deserves greater consideration is conducting an auction for early retirement of coal power plants worldwide: a global coal retirement auction. Here are the GOP’s claims, followed by the facts. *1. They claim crime is rising because Democrats have been “soft” on crime.* Rubbish. Rising crime rates are due to the proliferation of guns, which Republicans refuse to control. While violent crime rose 28 percent from 2019 to 2020, gun homicides rose 35 percent. Biden's plans to continue restrictions on drilling
Jazz Shaw: The “most transparent administration ever” certainly is establishing a track record for keeping things secret from the American public and that pattern is being repeated again this week. At a time when Joe Biden is threatening to impose new taxes and penalties on the oil and gas industry for “making too much money” and blaming them for the high cost of gasoline, a secret has slipped out from this administration. Katie Tubb at Heritage is reporting that there are a couple of nuggets of information to be found in a massive report recently released by Biden’s Department o... read more

Streets empty in Russian 'occupied' city in Ukraine
Reuters: The streets and boulevards of the Russian-held port of Kherson in southern Ukraine are virtually empty. Many shops and businesses have been shuttered and, at a jetty on the banks of the Dnipro River, a handful of people board a ferry to leave. As Ukrainian forces advance to the north and east of the strategic city, Russian-installed officials there have evacuated tens of thousands of civilians in recent weeks. Only a few remain, and some expressed frustration at not knowing what lay ahead. Compounding the uncertainty are claims and counter-claims by both sides in the ... read more

Incentivizing High-Performing Cybersecurity Programs in the Banking Sector
Image by by Lorenzo Cafaro from Pixabay The U.S. banking environment has been beset by increasingly disruptive cyberattacks targeting financial institutions and their supply chains. These attacks underscore the importance of incentivizing high-performing cybersecurity programs across the banking sector, including many small to mid-sized institutions with limited resources. Most discussion of regulatory incentivization centers around the use of regulatory “sticks,” but using “carrots” could actually drive performance that is both faster and more effective against changing threats. ... read more
