Civilization Versus the Noble Savages
The words “polite,” “politics,” and “police” are derived from the Greek word “polis,” which is a modern understanding of city-state. This could imply that a polite society stands on the two legs: a good political establishment and an efficient system of law enforcement (policing). The Latin equivalent of “polis” is “civitas,” from which the words “civic,” “civility,” and “civilization” are derived. The suppression of base instincts and freedoms is a necessary condition for the creation of a powerful society or civilization. The civilized men, those who live in a powerful society, c... read more

Trump's tax cuts mainly benefited the middle class
Justin Haskins: ... Biden and many Democrats in Congress have argued that their plan to raise taxes in the midst of an economic recovery is justified because it would help offset or reverse important elements of the Republican tax reform passed in 2017. Democrats have long claimed that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act needs to be repealed or heavily altered because it unjustly benefits the wealthy at the expense of working and middle-class families. However, the most recent personal income tax data from the IRS prove that this claim is completely false. The 2017 tax law has disproporti... read more

Liberal justices rationalizing bad Constitutional law
Washington Examiner: To listen to the liberal justices, one would think the Supreme Court’s job is not to uphold the Constitution but to maintain “public support.” Their boasted concern for the court’s reputation should be largely irrelevant in decision-making other than in presuming they will be supported widely if they act in good faith interpreting the law. Filtering constitutional jurisprudence through public relations concerns is improper. It undermines the very Constitution the justices are sworn to uphold. A Pivotal Moment
Sometimes opponents come together for a common cause. Robin Sears writes: In the spring of 1940, facing rapidly darkening clouds of war, Winston Churchill reached out quietly to Clement Attlee, a lifelong opponent, to join a new unity government along with some of his senior colleagues. Attlee’s agreement helped Britain win the war. And sometimes they blow the opportunity: Four decades later, Pierre Trudeau, facing a deepening recession, skyrocketing energy prices and rising tensions with both Quebec and the West, reached out to Ed Broadbent and asked him whether he and some coll... read more

We haven't had much country music here, because it's a genre I don't follow. However, there are a few artists I enjoy, and some that make me laugh out loud from time to time. The Beauty Of Grossular
Old timers of this blog will recall that I am an avid stone collector. In fact, of all experimental sciences I am fond of (Physics, Astronomy, Geology above others) Geology is the one that fascinated me first, as a six or seven year old child. We are talking about almost fifty years ago, when newspaper stands in Italy used to sell small packets containing pictures of soccer players (they were not even adhesive back then: you had to use your own glue to attach them in the proper place within collection albums which were sold separately) . Kids collected those "figurine", and exchanged... read more

Physics is a natural science but it is one that is really capable of explaining a lot (and very precisely) by assuming a very little, by assuming some important principles that actually imply powerful predictions that are often verified to be correct. The precise laws of physics are often derivable from some propositions that are almost comprehensible to linguists. The search for the deepest such principles has been vaguely underway since the conception of physics (in the strict sense) by Galileo, Newton, and pals but it was elevated to a new, industrial level when Einstein and pals... read more
