US Cyber Command Lawyer Calls For Military Cyber Operations Against Hackers
*The Hill:* *Cyber Command lawyer calls for military operations against hackers* The top lawyer for U.S. Cyber Command is calling for the United States to push back against transnational criminal hackers with military cyber operations. Marine Lt. Col. Kurt Sanger, general counsel at the command, wrote in a recent article published to Lawfare.com that ransomware attacks and other threats such as SolarWinds and Colonial Pipeline hacks highlight “the broad and severe impacts criminals can inflict through cyberspace.” The disruptions caused by the events “have demonstrated that wh... read more

Star Wars on Land: The U.S. Military Might Shoot Missiles Out Down with Lasers
*Michael Peck* *U.S. Military, * The question is: how can these be made small enough for battlefield service? *Here's What You Need to Remember: *Of course, there’s a catch. Continuous wave laser technology has been around long enough that the military has been able to ruggedize the system for use in the field. The U.S. Army wants a deadlier laser weapon that won’t just burn a target, but rather will slice it up. Instead of low-power continuous wave lasers that emit a steady stream of energy, the Army wants pulsed lasers that shoot intermittent but intense bursts that can quickl... read more

Was President Biden's Thursday's Remarks On Afghanistan The Worst Speech Of His Presidency?
*Peter Bergen, CNN*: *The worst speech of Biden's presidency* (CNN) On Thursday President Joe Biden spoke in defense of his ill-considered, hasty withdrawal from Afghanistan, in remarks peopled with straw men and littered with false assertions. First, Biden contended that he was bound by a 2020 Trump administration agreement with the Taliban to withdraw all US troops by May 2021. But that was an agreement conducted by a previous administration -- so it's not binding -- and it was predicated on the Taliban breaking with al-Qaeda. They didn't, according to the UN in a report r... read more

China was the world’s sixth-largest importer of weapons between 2014 and 2018, down 7 percent from the 2009 to 2013 time period. For years, drone warfare has been an essentially American pursuit. Seven Deadly Misconceptions About Nuclear Deterrence
*Franklin Miller, Peter Huessy* *Nuclear Deterrence, Americas* U.S. nuclear deterrence policy, in the broadest sense, is virtually unchanged since the Kennedy years. During the debate over the nuclear deterrent policy of the United States, the average person will hear many misconceptions about that policy advanced as “statements of fact.” But these aren’t facts, they are really just ideological tropes. Seven very earnestly held misconceptions tend to dominate the nuclear debating landscape and deserve to be examined. *The first misconception* is that national nuclear policies a... read more

*Trevor Filseth* *Afghanistan, * An expansion into Afghanistan, military or otherwise, would likely come with substantial negative costs for Beijing.
