Identifying The Policy Levers Generating Wage Suppression And Inequality
Inequalities abound in the U.S. economy, and a central driver in recent decades is the widening gap between the hourly compensation of a typical (median) worker and productivity—the income generated per hour of work. This growing divergence has been driven by two other widening gaps, that between the compensation received by the vast majority of workers and those at the top, and that between labor’s share of income and capital’s. This paper presents evidence that the divorce between the growth of median compensation and productivity, the inequality of compensation, and the erosion... read more

Where Did the Delta Variant Come From?
*Trevor Filseth* *Health, Americas* Researchers have estimated that the Delta variant is about 50 percent more contagious than the Alpha variant. When any virus is transferred from person to person, it experiences “copying errors” when strands of their genetic material are replicated inaccurately from one virus to the next. Most of the time, this does not result in any significant difference. However, because effective viruses survive and replicate more quickly, and unsuccessful ones die off, more effective virus strains naturally develop over time. Biden, the Fed, and Wall Street Are Using Inflation to Rob You
The economic figures released last week confirm what most Americans already know: inflation, especially in food, housing, energy, and cars is stealing whatever resources most working families have to rebuild their lives in the wake of the COVID lockdowns. In response to the obvious, Fed Chairman Jay Powell and the Biden White House assure us that this rise of inflation is only transitory. It is due to bottlenecks in the system that will clear up as the economy recovers, so do not worry too much as your living standards plummet. That is almost like saying the little green men under ... read more

COVID is ripping through the United States again. And that, James Downie writes, is just fine with Republicans: In the last two weeks of June, the United States averaged between 11,250 and 13,500 new coronavirus cases per day — the lowest numbers since the virus began spreading widely across the country in early 2020. As of Saturday, it was 31,464 cases per day. With multiple vaccines widely available, this rise was entirely preventable. The backsliding is due in part to Republican politicians and right-wing commentators who have spread misinformation about the virus, as well as c... read more

Do drug trials underestimate side effects?
One commonly used trick in drug trials is to exclude any group that might make the drug look worse, such as those that are more likely to experience side effects. A good recent example of this is the covid vaccine trials, which largely excluded people with auto-immune diseases (more likely to develop an auto-immune disease after vaccination), people with allergies (more likely to have an allergic reaction to the vaccine), and, of course, the elderly (less likely to develop immunity after getting the vaccine, and more likely to become seriously sick from it). read more
