Messing With The Numbers
When you want to blame everything on a particular group you put your thumb on the scale. Had one shot of either the Pfizer or Moderna mRNA vaccines? You’re not vaccinated. Had two? Gay Rights, Religion, and Giving Peace a Chance
*Fulton v. City of Philadelphia* was the latest skirmish in the ongoing war over gay rights and religious liberty. The conflict concerns, in various forms, the question whether religious people who conscientiously object to facilitating same-sex marriages, and who therefore decline to provide cakes, photography, or other services, be exempted from anti-discrimination laws. The adoption agency in *Fulton*, which refused to provide certification for same-sex couples, offered a different instance of the same problem. The Court managed to avoid handing either side a dramatic victory. ... read more

McKenzie, however, suggests that the US intention to continue to support its partners means that they’ll continue to “offer” airstrikes to Afghanistan. Global Call On Banks To Stop Financing Fossil Fuels
To stop the world descending into full climate chaos, the continued burning of fossil fuels must be brought to an end as soon as possible. Even burning all coal, oil, and gas reserves already in production will push global temperature rise far beyond 1.5°C and likely beyond 2°C, the stated goal of the Paris Climate Agreement. This leaves no space for further exploration or extraction, yet many fossil fuel companies plan to vastly expand their operations, posing a true existential threat to people and planet. F-117: The Stealth Fighter That Made the U.S. Military 'Invisible'
*Peter Suciu* *F-117, * The fighter was so secret that it was in service for six years before the U.S. Air Force even admitted its existence. The exact potential of an advanced weapon system is never really known until it is tested in combat. This was certainly true of the stealth aircraft the United States developed during the Cold War—it was also the sort of weapon that most military planners would *never want to* see a need to be used. Then with the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact, it might have seemed that aircraft such as the F-117 wouldn’t ever be used in actual combat. Loc... read more

Is South Korea a Middle Power or a Protectorate?
*Ted Galen Carpenter* *North Korea, Asia* If Seoul wants to join the ranks of true middle powers, then it must greatly reduce its security dependence on the United States. There is little question that the Republic of Korea’s political leadership wants the country to play a more substantial role in international affairs. South Korea indisputably possesses many of the capabilities that so-called “middle powers,” such as Australia and Thailand. In terms of economic power, the ROK’s gross domestic product of more than $1.6 trillion makes it the world’s twelfth-largest economy. Thus... read more

*Mark Episkopos* *Su-27, * Remembered not just for its Cold War successes, the Su-27 and its upgraded variants will continue serving as one of Russia’s most numerous and flexible fourth-generation workhorse fighters. Nigh-unmatched in its versatility, the Sukhoi Su-27 (NATO reporting name Flanker) has distinguished itself as one of the most successful Soviet fighter designs of the late Cold War era. The plane that would eventually become the Su-27 grew out of the Soviet PFI, Russian for the "Prospective Frontline Fighter,” program. The PFI’s basic requirement was for a flexible ... read more
Why South Korea Is Stuck in the Middle
*Robert Kelly* *South Korea, Asia* Seoul will need to find a working relationship with Japan if its much-sought image as a “responsible middle power” is to solidify.
