Disney furloughs workers but still pays managers huge bonuses
It's not unreasonable that Disney is furlough 50% of its workforce since it's closing its parks. However what is something that stinks is that they will continue to give top managers a total of $1.5 billion in bonuses, three months of pay for those workers being laid off. This is the sort of "capitalism" that modern conservatives reject. Long gone are the days when anyone support unrestricted capitalism where rich robber barons could break unions and exploit workers. While this isn't something that the government should "fix" we the people should shame Disney and possibly boycott i... more »

The data is in — stop the panic and end the total isolation
[image: undefined] The tragedy of the COVID-19 pandemic appears to be entering the containment phase. Tens of thousands of Americans have died, and Americans are now desperate for sensible policymakers who have the courage to ignore the panic and rely on facts. Leaders must examine accumulated data to see what has actually happened, rather than keep emphasizing hypothetical projections; combine that empirical evidence with fundamental principles of biology established for decades; and then thoughtfully restore the country to function. Five key facts are being ignored by those calli... more »

Here are ten more principles of social success that I’d add to Carnegie’s classic lists. 1. Current measures prohibiting the eviction of tenants and helping them through the financial crisis won't last forever. A 40-year-old voucher program might be a longer term solution.

"We Have Become ‘Karen’ Nation"
*"We Have Become ‘Karen’ Nation"* by Tom Luongo "A week ago, I didn’t know what a ‘Karen’ was. Today I can’t stop seeing Karens everywhere I look. It’s like that moment in "They Live!" when Nada puts on the glasses for the first time. The problem now is I can’t take the glasses off. And I’m not the only one. In recent weeks the failed Karen meme of a few years ago has returned with a vengeance as people realize just how much damage Karens have done to our society. A Karen is a person, usually a woman, who is never satisfied with the service she’s receiving and demands to talk to th... more »
Hundreds of crows gathering at a car park in Texas
Scary footage shows hundreds of crows gathering at a car park in Texas in scenes reminiscent of a horror movie. Video was posted of the crows perched on tops of several cars outside a Walmart store in Houston, Texas. The rare sighting happened on December 14 and footage was posted with the caption: 'As temperatures dropped into the freezing digits, tens of thousands of crows congregate and tailgate at a Wal-Mart carpark. They are all over the place.' In it the man taking the video can be heard saying: 'Car washes will make some money now. They're on every car. The crows, which are ... more »

I agree - let the states dig themselves out of the hole they've made
Earlier this week I pointed out that, just as I predicted some time ago, states with serious budgetary and fiscal problems of their own making were using the coronavirus pandemic as an excuse to get Federal funds to bail themselves out. I used Illinois as the prime example, but added: Look for other states to make similar demands during this crisis. They think that since so much federal money is being thrown around, no-one will notice (or care very much) that they're taking the opportunity to divert billions, even trillions of federal dollars to pay for their own excesses and sel... more »

Why America's Accusations That China Is Testing Nuclear Weapons Harms Arms Control
*Sahil Shah* *Security, Americas* [image: Why America's Accusations That China Is Testing Nuclear Weapons Harms Arms Control] The success of the CTB Treaty requires good-faith arguments. In a new compliance report released last week, the United States once again accused Russia, and now China, of violating the “zero-yield” standard or threshold envisioned under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). While “zero,” “yield,” and “threshold” do not appear in the text of the CTBT, the United States, Russia, China, and other negotiating parties have always held the interpret... more »

The pandemic has thus ground the global oil industry to a halt. Storage is about to breach saturation point. Oil service firms that supply the industry are shutting down. A Tribute To Teresa Rodrigo
I was very saddened the other day upon learning from a colleague that Teresa Rodrigo Anoro passed away. Teresa was a professor at IFCA, University of Cantabria in Santander, Spain, where she held the position since 1995. At the IFCA she led a strong team of experimental particle physicists who collaborate to the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The *Times* story cited groups such as FreedomWorks and ALEC. But left out of that story was another well-funded group that has also been aiding the demonstrators. A *Washington Post* story names that group: The ads on Facebook sounded populist and passionate: “The people are rising up against these insane shutdowns,” they said. “We’re fighting back to demand that our elected officials reopen America.” ... more »
The BBC's Ideological Drift
The open thread is looking lively. Disqus provides the flexibility that other systems lack! One negative response to - may I call it our reinvention (?) - was spotted - not on *this* blog — but over on Biased-BBC. I do hope the predicted invasion of trolls doesn’t materialise. But hey ho. Anyway, there’s bound to be a certain amount of cross-pollination between ‘over here’ and ‘over there’ (one example) and on this occasion I’m borrowing from something I first saw on Biased-BBC. ....and in more depth here. "The Islamic prayer call states that ever... more »
