Trump's Most Repulsive Pandemic Utterance

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 minute ago
Trump has said a lot of things I find disgusting but the one that really got to me was when he accused pandemic healthcare providers of stealing supplies and selling them "out the back door." He's such a horrible, horrible excuse for a human being. These men and women are risking their lives to do their duty, which is more than anyone can truthfully say about that slob. Some of them have died; Trump, unfortunately, hasn't. Why would he accuse them of such a thing? Obviously because it would be *exactly* what he would do. Healthcare workers are not stealing masks, PPE, ventilator... more »

drug trafficking ‘represents the most serious challenge to human security

*This* illegal market, estimated in Kenya at more than €100 million a year, is constantly growing and has serious consequences for the health of Kenyans. Previously absent from the country, hard drugs – especially heroin – are now easy to find and at minimal cost: less than two euros a dose. In Mombasa, the drug-trafficking hub, an estimated 3.5 percent of the population has already tried heroin. Estimates of frequent users range from 2,500 to 5,000. Drug use is becoming a growing public health problem because as well as the harmful effects of drugs, many users contract AIDS ... more »

These Four Aircraft Explain Why Russia's Air Force Is So Powerful

Caleb Larson at The National Interest - 49 minutes ago
*Caleb Larson* *Security, Europe* Most military equipment in Russian arsenals today is legacy Soviet hardware. Russian bombers are no exception. *Here's What You Need To Remember: *When and if the PAK DA becomes operational, it would put an important arrow in Russia’s quiver—a theoretically very capable stealth bomber. Still, if that can be managed affordably remains to be seen. The relatively low price of oil has severely constrained Russian military spending, and designing a brand-new stealth platform is no easy thing. How We Classify Diseases Into Epidemics, Pandemics, and Outbreaks

Hassan Vally at The National Interest - 49 minutes ago
*Hassan Vally* *Public Health, World* [image: Reuters] What differences are there? The word “epidemic” immediately brings to mind a highly infectious and deadly disease of the kind found in Hollywood films. In Contagion, for instance, a lethal infection with frightening symptoms spreads like wildfire, threatening humanity as we know it. The scary thing is that infectious disease epidemics in real life have the potential to be equally dramatic and deadly. One only has to recall the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, which began in 2013. This epidemic killed around 70% of those infec... more »

20 Percent Unemployment Is Here: 22 Million People Have Lost Their Job Thanks to Coronavirus

*Hunter DeRensis* *economy, * The economic consensus is that by the end of April, the U.S. unemployment rate will hover around 20%, the highest in eighty years. The economic destruction wrought by the coronavirus pandemic continues to grow just as the disease does. While over 28,000 Americans have died from the virus, the number of people unemployed in this country has grown to over 22 million people. On Nietzsche’s View of Redeemer

Unknown at The Verma Report - 2 hours ago
Solitude is not a flight from reality, rather it’s a flight from the banal ways of looking at reality, and the discovery of a unique perspective on reality. Nietzsche talks about the redeemer, who is filled with love and contempt, who gives up his solitude to redeem humanity. Here’s a line from Nietzsche’s *Genealogy of Morals*: “This man of the future will redeem us, not just from the ideal held up till now, but also from those things which had to arise from it, from the great nausea, the will to nothingness, from nihilism, that stroke of midday and of great decision that makes the ... more »

SOME SIMPLE MATH

We've heard right-wingers say many times that the current projections for covid-19 deaths in the U.S. make the disease seem no more lethal than the seasonal flu in a bad year. In 2018-2019, for instance, the flu killed more than 60,000 Americans. Let me just remind you that the typical flu season is six months long. Covid-19 has now killed 34,475 Americans, according to Worldometer. That's as of today -- April 16 -- and it doesn't include today's death toll from every state. Now recall that the first covid-19 death in this country was on February 29. A flu season that kills 60,0... more »
