Can the Stock Market Oil Collapse Save Canada from being a "Smash and Grab" Country?
*Police read protesters an injunction order as they blockrail lines in Hamilton, Ontario, in responseto the Wet'suwet'en and Tyendinagaprotests, Feb. 25, 2020.* When you're constructing the "Newz" out of whole fabricated and manipulated cloth, you have to move fast. Rapid scene changes are a must. Just two weeks ago, we were all mesmerized by sights such as that depicted above. Canadian police reading an injunction order to First Nations at a railway blockade. If you will recall, the blockades were set up to protest the "Smash and Grab" theft of Wet'suwet'en land in northern ... more »

"Singing To The Deer"
*"Singing To The Deer"* by Patricia Monaghan “At solstice, the woods were bright in a snowy way, the sky pearl gray above the stately maples and gnarled burr oaks. An Alaskan marooned in the urban Midwest, it took me years to find this nearby patch of relatively undisturbed land where I can sense the power of wildness. Now I go there often, watching the seasons unfold their changeful unchanging patterns in the increasingly familiar forest. I especially like to walk among the sleeping trees in the half-lit silence of winter dawns. The trail I follow winds and twists, new patches of ... more »

The Great Oil Crash of 2020 Has Arrived
*Hunter DeRensis* *Economics, * "The House of Saud, contrary to their initial plans, will now flood the market with cheap crude to crash prices and extract concessions from its competitors by grabbing up market share. This involves increasing their daily output by almost two million barrels and setting its crude to Chinese buyers for as little as $6." A chain of events on the international market, interrelated with fears of the coronavirus, a glut in the oil market, and uncertainty about the strength of the U.S. bull market has led to a dramatic fall in stock prices and a fallin... more »
Turkey and Russia Could Be Headed Towards a Crisis. Here's How Trump Should Respond.
*Douglas Macgregor* *Security, Middle East* When Erdogan views the map of the Middle East, Erdogan sees Syria and most of Iraq as historic Turkish territory taken from the Turks when the Ottoman Empire collapsed at the end of WWI. It is no accident that Turks wear T-shirts with Erdogan’s picture and the slogan “The Sultan of the World.” Russia may have a problem with that. Zbigniew Brzezinski habitually lamented the failure of American Policymakers to study maps of the world, to appreciate the historic impact of wars, economics, history, religion, language, culture, and climate.... more »
Don’t Buy Hype Out of the Military-Industrial Complex
*James Holmes* *Security, * As Richard Feynman might advise: make caveat emptor your motto when sizing up new concepts. If a hypothesis doesn’t undergo rigorous tests, and if it doesn’t perform well . . . it’s wrong. Beware of minor word choices when interacting with representatives of the military-industrial complex. Syntax can shape or misshape deliberations about strategy, force design, or budgeteering. Something as simple as speaking about some potential future capability or widget in the present tense can mislead. Such phrasing implies that the capability or widget already e... more »

The Syria Safe Zone Idea Is Back (And It Still Won't Work)
*Daniel R. DePetris* *Security, Middle East* The U.S. military is more than capable of establishing one, but the endeavor is expensive and resource-intensive—diverting energy, capacity, manpower, hardware, and intelligence from regions deemed higher priority for the United States. The Assad regime and the jihadist-dominated opposition in Idlib would follow a cease-fire, a buffer zone—jointly patrolled by Russian an... more »

Seven Years After Death Of Hugo Chavez, Venezuela Still Resists
Seven years have passed since the death of Hugo Chávez. The Latin American and national situation has changed in that time, and yet the Venezuelan reality is still partly explained by what his life meant, particularly in the humble sectors of the country. The wake lasted ten days. Men and women from all over the country arrived, each as he could, with what he had, to say goodbye to Chavez, to the commander, to thank him, to promise. The lines lasted day, night, dawn, kilometers. I saw it near ten o'clock at night, a lady had passed out, outside the hill's lights looked like a birth.... more »

"The Choice Of Achilles..."
"Suppose that we are wise enough to learn and know- and yet not wise enough to control our learning and knowledge, so that we use it to destroy ourselves? Even if that is so, knowledge remains better than ignorance. It is better to know - even if the knowledge endures only for the moment that comes before destruction - than to gain eternal life at the price of a dull and swinish lack of comprehension of a universe that swirls unseen before us in all its wonder. That was the choice of Achilles, and it is mine, too." - Isaac Asimov

It's the oil not the virus that's causing todays problem
The market is having big problems today because oil is too cheap. While that sounds odd there's actually logic behind it. US fossil fuel production has exploded through the use of fracking but to be cost effective oil has to have a minimum price which is above what we're seeing these days. The reason prices are low is that not only is demand down, with less traveling due to the WuHu flu but Saudi Arabia has decided to drive down oil prices by dramatically increasing production. Ostensibly that's to punish Russia and Iran, both of whom count on oil revenues to fund their imperialism... more »

Central Banking is Socialism
[image: undefined] Last week, the Federal Reserve responded to Wall Street’s coronavirus panic with an “emergency” interest rate cut. This emergency cut failed to revive the stock market, leading to predictions that the Fed will again cut rates later this month. More rate cuts would drive interest rates to near, or even below, zero. Lowering interest rates punishes people for saving, thus encouraging consumers and businesses to spend every penny they make. This may give the economy a short-term boost. But, it inhibits long-term economic growth by depleting the savings necessary for... more »

Crimes In Afghanistan: Fatou Bensouda’s Investigative Mission
It seemed an unlikely prospect. The International Criminal Court has tended to find itself accused of chasing up the inhumane rogues of Africa rather than those from any other continent. It has also been accused of having an overly burdensome machinery and lethargy more caught up with procedure than substance. […]
Could the U.S. Sanction the International Criminal Court?

COVID-19: Look after the small things you can control
The fear-mongering and panic stations concerning the current coronavirus epidemic are reaching fever pitch. Politicians are accusing each other of failing to prepare for it; pundits are bloviating every which way; and alarums and excursions are the order of the day. In the midst of all this folderol, we find ourselves rudderless. Which way should we turn? Whom should we believe? What should we do? The short, simple answer is that we should do whatever is in *our* power and *our* control to do. If something is beyond that - national health-care policy, hospital staffing and ... more »

*Mark Episkopos* *Technology, * 5G seems to be coming in the next iPhone. But what else should we expect? Apple is at least half a year away from announcing its next flagship phone, but a steady trickle of leaks from market analysts and industry insiders has given us an increasingly coherent picture of what to expect. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming iPhone 12. A fresh batch of leaks, dumped late last week, reveals a spate of new hardware details while reinforcing some previous points of speculation. Donald Trump's New Coronavirus Strategy: Blame China?
*Peter Harris* *Politics, * Using the coronavirus as a stick for beating China would not be good foreign policy. Most importantly, antagonizing Beijing would hamper international efforts to deal with the virus. For the time being, the coronavirus crisis seems to have provided an opportunity for a small rapprochement in U.S.-China relations. Perhaps because he feels under pressure to downplay the seriousness of the pandemic, President Trump has been effusive in his praise for Beijing’s handling of the spread – evidence, he suggests, that the virus can be brought under control. Revolt at Sobibor: When the Nazis' Victims Took Over a Death Camp
*Jonathan F. Keiler* *History, Europe* A heroic uprising. By the spring of 1943, the Nazi deaths camps in eastern Poland—Sobibor, Belzac, and Treblinka—were running out of victims. These camps were main centers of Operation Reinhard. Named for the late Reinhard Heydrich, Heinrich Himmler’s former deputy and chief architect of the “final solution,” the purpose of the camps was pure mass murder on an industrial scale. Operation Reinhard was, by the perverse standards of the “final solution,” an overall success. The death camp at Treblinka alone murdered at least a half million peo... more »

One of the challenging parts of my job here at Cato is that it calls for me, not only to make the case for monetary alternatives, but to comment on current Fed policies. Why is that such a challenge? Because so far as many of my fellow free-market fans are concerned, saying that the Fed should do X rather than Y amounts to endorsing monetary central planning—a major free-market no-no. From border security to climate change, national emergency declarations raise hard questions about presidential power

How the ‘Bernie Bros’ were invented as sexist, racist, antisemitic and unAmerican as borscht
The Democratic presidential nomination race is a fascinating case study in how power works – not least, because the Democratic party leaders are visibly contriving to impose one candidate, Joe Biden, as the party’s nominee, even as it becomes clear that he is no longer mentally equipped to run a local table tennis club let alone the world’s most powerful nation.

It is unusual for Popular Resistance to cover an issue two weeks in a row but the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is developing rapidly, and there is a lot of misinformation about it.
