Musical Interlude: Kevin Kern, “Another Realm”
Kevin Kern, “Another Realm”
"A Look to the Heavens"
“While hunting for comets in the skies above 18th century France, astronomer Charles Messier diligently kept a list of the things he encountered that were definitely not comets. This is number 27 on his now famous not-a-comet list. In fact, 21st century astronomers would identify it as a planetary nebula, but it's not a planet either, even though it may appear round and planet-like in a small telescope. Messier 27 (M27) is an excellent example of a gaseous emission nebula created as a sun-like star runs out of nuclear fuel in its core. The nebula forms as the star's outer layers are... more »
"Three Words You Must Remember"
*"Three Words You Must Remember"* by Paul Rosenberg” "The statement I’ll be making today is simple… very simple. Nonetheless, I think it’s of tremendous importance. It’s the type of thing that, if kept sufficiently in mind, can slowly revise your mental universe. It’s also the type of thing that makes me want to write, “Repeat this every morning, noon, and night for at least one month, then meditate on it for a few years.” And I’m not entirely unserious about this; I think that would be an immensely valuable thing for you to do. This concept can not only revamp you, but could revam... more »
"Life, In Short..."
"It is easy to overlook this thought that life just is. As humans we are inclined to feel that life must have a point. We have plans and aspirations and desires. We want to take constant advantage of the intoxicating existence we've been endowed with. But what's life to a lichen? Yet it's impulse to exist, to be, is every bit as strong as ours- arguably even stronger. If I were told that I had to spend decades being a furry growth on a rock in the woods, I believe I would lose the will to go on. Lichens don't. Like virtually all living things, they will suffer any hardship, endure ... more »
Chet Raymo, "The Great Silence"
*"The Great Silence"* by Chet Raymo "If there is one word that should not be uttered, it is the name of - no, I will not say it. Any name diminishes. In the face of whatever it is that is most mysterious, most holy, we are properly silent. It is appropriate, I think, to praise the creation, to make a joyful noise of thanksgiving for the sensate world. But praising the Creator is another thing altogether. When we make a big racket on His behalf we are more than likely addressing an idol in our own image. What was it that Pico Iyer said? "Silence is the tribute that we pay to holines... more »
"11 Things Everyone Needs You to Know"
*"11 Things Everyone Needs You to Know"* by Marc "A silhouette of a human being stands before you. Perhaps an old friend. Perhaps a neighbor. Perhaps a perfect stranger, like me. Here are 11 things we all need you to keep in mind… *1.* *You never really know how much the people around you are hurting.* You could be standing next to someone who is completely broken inside and you wouldn’t even know it. So never deprive someone of hope; it might be all they have. And remember that there are two ways to spread light in this world: You can either be a flame of hope, or a mirror that r... more »

Coronavirus or General Flynn?
Which do I want to write about? Let’s look at the statistics on Coronavirus. There have been 50 (or about 50 at the time I am writing this) people in the United States, who have passed from this world because of the coronavirus, also known as covid-19. There were over 1600 children aborted yesterday, according to statistics from the CDC. And the day before, and the day before.(Using data extrapolated from the latest results available. And these results are voluntary, which means they are probably under reported.) Coronavirus ain’t squat. Nothing to be excited about. We kill more bab... more »
Coronavirus Meets 1880s Photography, Produces Unique Work of Art
I’ve worked in / with photography, film cameras, and darkroom technique for a half century plus ten years. I get blog posts from others in the field – both young hipsters rediscovering film, and fellow geezers who never forgot it. From the 1860s through about 1910, many photographs were made as tintypes: Thin pieces of steel, coated with a light-sensitive emulsion called a collodion, exposed in a large format camera, and then developed under dim red light. Matthew Brady shot most of his Civil War images on tintypes. Your great great grandparents’ portraits were quite likely made on ... more »

Meet China's Very First Nuclear Attack Submarine (It Was a Disaster)
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, Asia* Meet the Type 091. *Key Point:* While the Type 091 may be remembered as a crude effort, it was ultimately a successful one, and an important first step in China’s self-sufficiency in nuclear submarines. In 1974, the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) accepted delivery of the country’s first nuclear-powered submarine. Long a cherished goal of Chairman Mao himself, the design was initially a disappointment. Despite their less than ideal performance, the Type 091 Han-class submarines will ultimately be remembered as Asia’s first indigenously produ... more »
Go West, Young Man? Americans Aren't Moving Around As Much As Before
*James Pethokoukis* *Politics, * No more frontier, after all... Settlers in the New World didn’t stick to the coasts. The history of the American experience has been one of mobility, particularly westward. “Go West, young man!” and all that. But not anymore. First, Americans aren’t moving as much generally as they used to. In 2018, fewer than 10 percent of us changed residence within the past year, half of the level of the 1980s. And the drive to journey westward, in particular, has dissipated. As Philadelphia Fed economist Kyle Mangum writes in the new analysis “No More Calif... more »

It's Okay. You Don't Have To Homeschool.
Like most teachers, I've had those student requests. End of the period, usually, they stop by the desk, usually looking downhearted. "Could I have the assignments for the next week or so," they ask. And then the cause. Death of a relative. Family emergency. A non-elective operation. A family tragedy. Some sort of unavoidable crisis that would take them away from school. My answer was usually something along the lines of, "Just worry about taking care of yourself. We can sort out the work when you get back." On the occasions when the absence might cause extra falling-behind stress, I... more »

Siler also correctly points out that the Dems’ Trump Derangement Syndrome is now so severe, that they are willing to blow up the American economy, the 401(k) portfolios of every retiree, and (with luck) bury a few Trump supporters before the election. Regular readers of Hardnox already know this to be true, having seen countless examples of it laid out on these pages. But (to paraphrase Rush) every hour new eyeballs are finding our site. And the tale of... more »

Rocket launchers used for second strike on Camp Taji (Al Masalah) A day after the U.S. and England hit five Kataib Hezbollah targets in Iraq for the deaths of two American and one British soldiers at Camp Taji in Baghdad that same facility was hit again by rockets. 33 missiles rained down on Taji from seven launchers. That resulted in three more U.S. soldiers and 3-4 Iraqi Security Forces being wounded. Reject Using My Unjust Conviction Against Julian Assange
In 2015 I was wrongfully convicted of, and imprisoned for, violating the U.S. Espionage Act. Now, while there is no question that I stand in solidarity with WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange in a British court as he fights extradition, little did I know that my presence is also there as fodder to support extradition. If I am going to be used in such a way, there should at least be a modicum of truth to my inclusion. I found nothing reasonable about being persecuted and sentenced to prison under the Espionage Act.

Joe Biden's corona virus expert wants old people to die
Biden has set up a "Public Health Advisory Group" to help him figure out how to deal with corona virus/COVID 19. That's a good thing. Of course Joe will probably use this group to second guess everything Trump does and label it as wrong or bad or insufficient. Given that Joe is already been pretty negative about the travel bans which experts say have significantly helped Americans it's clear that he's more concerned about scoring political points that protecting your health. What's interesting is that Joe Biden has chosen Ezekiel Emanuel to be on the committee. Emanuel has writte... more »
Criticising the Coronavirus Strategy
You don't have to be a Lisa Nandy fan to agree with her that the government's response to the Coronavirus outbreak is a shambles. A few weeks ago, their effort presented as the epitome of sensible sensiblism: track down people who'd been exposed to infection, test, isolate, and do the same for everyone else they came into touch with. And credit where credit is due, one of the reasons we're weeks behind the calamity in Italy is because containment was taken very seriously. Unfortunately, as we pass from handling a few dozen infections to thousands of ill, it's evident there are seri... more »
It's time to pray: Corona Virus edition
Prayer is good because it reminds us that we're not in charge; that God is. It's too easy in or modern first world lives to forget about what matters; what sort of person are we making of ourselves? Corona virus is helping us meditate on our own deaths. Satan works hard to make us pretend that we will live forever but the reality is that no one gets out of this life alive. But when we ignore that our ultimate purpose is to become more like Christ-- to become good loving caring people-- we can make all sorts of stupid decisions ranging from watching porn, and thereby exploiting othe... more »

The latest advice about the coronavirus and your pets by a US microbiologist
When a Pomeranian in Hong Kong tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 last week, pets quickly became part of the coronavirus conversation. The case raised the alarming possibility that pets could become part of the transmission chain for the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, which could potentially harm both them and us. But many questions remain about this possibility and how best to respond. As Hong Kong’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) explained in a fact sheet last week, the Pomeranian tested “weakly positive” for the virus in sensitive tests th... more »

Two New Coup Disappointments In Venezuela
The Venezuelan right faces a sustained crisis in the ability to mobilize its social base. The latest actions have been an expression of that picture of little strength that cannot be disguised. March 10 should be the day to reverse that trend.
