Around The World With COVID-19

Probably too late, Iran is finally warning its citizens that millions of Iranians could die in the pandemic if they ignore the health guidelines. Those are basically the same health guidelines virtually no one is following in any of the Trump counties and states. Until recently Iran has followed the same basic guidelines as Trump-- basically ignoring the outbreak and hoping it would go away. There are no accurate numbers available from Iran but you get stories about bodies piling in morgues, mass graves and many thousands of critically ill people in swamped hospitals without the... more »

Coronavirus: Why 'Herd Immunity' Is a Dangerous Strategy

*Arindam Basu* *Public Health, World* [image: Reuters] It's experimental at best, and dangerous at worst. As most of the world tries to suppress the coronavirus spread, some countries are going it alone - trying to manage the pandemic through so-called “herd immunity”. Herd immunity means letting a large number of people catch a disease, and hence develop immunity to it, to stop the virus spreading. A little irony here obviously. Socialism solves little except to tax a need and otherwise get firmly in the wa causing economic suppression. Sound labor protocols, support for the weakened, and even good medical policy are all legitimate problems to be solved in order for capitalism to flourish. I often get asked - “How long is this COVID19 pandemic going to last?”. The answer, according to the WHO, is that it is up to us. We can stop this. The only question is whether we will. Most countries in the world are acting vigorously to stop it with rigorous case finding, contact tracing and isolation. But the UK and, sadly, Netherlands have decided to follow another direction.
