Washington Governor Jay Inslee is doing the right thing by announcing a ban on events and social gatherings attended by more than 250 people-- should be less than 100-- in an effort to slow the coronavirus outbreak. I see there is a big empty space in the Rolling Stones tour schedule between San Diego's Credit Union Stadium where it is still due to begin on May 8-- that will never happen-- and May 12's show at the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. Charlie Watts is 78 years old. Jagger and Richards are both 76. This would probably have been their last tour but I would guess the chances... more »

COVID-19: The facts as of March 12, 2020

There are lots of things happening around the coronavirus epidemic - sorry, it's a pandemic now - but most of them revolve around issues we've already addressed in earlier articles here, and others have addressed *ad nauseam* elsewhere. Still, it's good to have accurate, insightful information on which to base our own decisions and actions, and that's what I try to present here. Let's start with the situation in health care. It's looking pretty dire. Italy has so many cases of the disease that doctors have advised medics to "stop treating the elderly and focus on those with bett... more »

*Mandie Shean* *Health, Americas* [image: Reuters] Children are either being infected less or exhibit milder symptoms, but they may still play an important role in transmitting the virus. As the number of new cases of coronavirus infection continue to rise the impact is now being felt in schools in Australia. At least four closed due to students and a staff member testing positive for the virus. Most international travel by Queensland students is also banned. It’s therefore important for parents to be there for their children to ease any concerns they may have about the virus an... more »

Will Putin's Power Grab May Make Him President of Russia for Decades

Alexey D Muraviev at The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Alexey D Muraviev* *Politics, Eurasia* [image: Reuters] Many Russians don’t see a viable alternative. It should be taken as a given that Russian President Vladimir Putin is a master of ambiguity and strategic surprise. After the Russian government resigned and Putin proposed amendments to the constitution in January, the Russian leader spent a great deal of time rebuffing claims he would try to run for president again when his fourth term in office was up in March 2024. But this week, he did not back away from a proposal by Valentina Tereshkova – a trusted supporter and one of ... more »

China's J-20 Stealth Fighter Dominates America's F-35 In This One Area

Mark Episkopos at The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Mark Episkopos* *Security, * Not stealth, but range. *Key point: *There is much that is still unknown about the J-20, including its launch mechanism and the final specifications of its WS-15 engine currently in development. The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force made waves at the 2018 Zhuhai Airshow with the latest showing of their flagship fifth-generation stealth fighter, the J-20. As is common with airshow coverage, large swaths of the ensuing commentary focused on the J-20’s handling and maneuverability as it performed a series of rolls and a climb. But this elides... more »

Never letting a crisis go to waste, propagandists are using the coronavirus to spread disinformation and conspiracy theories about the United States. Europe's Final World War II Battle Took Place 16 Days After Germany Surrendered

Robert Beckhusen at The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Robert Beckhusen* *Security, * And didn't involve Germans. *Key point: *The cost for both sides is in dispute. The small town of Odžak is nestled between the Bosna and Sava rivers, in the north of present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina. To the north and east, a handful of villages spread over the plains, while to the south and west a few shallow inclines lead into the foothills of Vučjak Mountain. Today the town is a quiet place, only worthy of note due to a large Bosnian flag — allegedly one of the biggest ever — that the town’s inhabitants made a few years ago. However, in the sp... more »

Young People Are Drinking Less Alcohol. Here's Why.

Dominic Conroy at The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Dominic Conroy* *Society, World* Let's take a closer look. Young people are drinking less than ever before. Some reading this will be able to recall the 1990s – the decade of peak alcohol, when drinking was a key part of life for young people. The decade saw the rise of pub and club culture, public displays of drunkenness by young adults and the arrival of new kinds of alcoholic drinks you could buy (alcopops anyone?). Flash forward to 2020 and the picture is very different. A range of studies from countries where drinking is a big part of the culture confirms a sharp decline i... more »

Michelle Grattan at The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Michelle Grattan* *economy, Americas* [image: Reuters] The government is hoping to “supercharge” investment in items like cars and utes, new tools and kitchen equipment. The Morrison government’s stimulus measures, to be announced Thursday, will include a $25,000 cash flow boost for small and medium-sized businesses, a subsidy to help preserve apprentices’ jobs, and a big expansion of the incentive to invest in equipment. These three items alone will total A$8.7 billion, in a package which is set to be much larger than earlier estimates. This indicates the government has respon... more »

Adam Cohen, Lindsey Darvin at The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Adam Cohen, Lindsey Darvin* *Sports, North America* Gambling has become a valuable tool to retain existing fans and develop new ones. Could this be put to work for a good cause? Every March Madness, thousands of tweets and articles dissecting seedings, potential upsets and favorable matchups flood the feeds of sports fans. According to ESPN, over 70 million people will fill out a bracket. Meanwhile $10 billion will be spent on office pools and bets, and work productivity losses are estimated to be in the billions. That’s all for the men’s tournament. But you’d be hard pressed to... more »

"It Would Be So Much Easier..."

CoyotePrime at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 20 hours ago
"It would be so much easier just to fold our hands and not make this fight... to say, I, one man, I can do nothing. I grow afraid only when I see people thinking and acting like this. We all know the story about the man who sat beside the trail too long, and then it grew over and he could never find his way again. We can never forget what has happened, but we cannot go back nor can we just sit beside the trail". - Plains Cree Chief, 1842-1886. His dying words.
