The resolution may not make it out of the House Foreign Affairs Committee but the Florida Republican Mario Diaz-Balart and his constituents were more than outraged at the comments Bernie Sanders has made on Cuba and the Castro regime. THE RATIONAL ANIMAL'S END: Coe's book lays waste to an ancient myth!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 11 hours ago
*FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 2020Jeffrey Rosen makes things worse:* Over the past three or four decades, a tired old myth had come to an end. We refer to the myth of the rational animal. In popular mythology, it started with Aristotle! Are we humans really "the rational animal?" As the term is commonly understood, were we *ever* any such thing? Chris Matthews, and our acceptance of same, helped demolish this silly old claim. So has Alexis Coe's new book, You Never Forget Your First. Coe book lays waste to that tired old myth. Iranian protestations of innocence notwithstanding, the arrows following last week's massive drone and missile strikes on oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia all point toward Tehran. In this, there's one key question that's on everybody's mind: What is Iran after? While Tehran's aggression has made the probability of a U.S. or Saudi military strike on Iran higher in the short term, the Islamic republic does not necessarily intend to trigger such a strike and the ramifica... more »

Aristotle says, there are some men who are by nature slaves. He is right. The world is full of knaves and savages whose is a slave mentality—they can be from any strata of society; in fact, many of them are the progeny of high culture. They are the reason why a nation with total freedom can never survive. The model of freedom that may work is the one that is founded on rule of law, and rule of law is founded on a system of authority which cannot be subverted and beyond which there is no appeal. My point is that without a system of authority freedom is impossible.
