Free Download: Kahlil Gibran, "The Garden of the Prophet"
*"The Garden of the Prophet" * by Kahlil Gibran "Oftentimes we call Life bitter names, but only when we ourselves are bitter and dark. And we deem her empty and unprofitable, but only when the soul goes wandering in desolate places, and the heart is drunken with over-mindfulness of self. Life is deep and high and distant; and though only your vast vision can reach even her feet, yet she is near; and though only the breath of your breath reaches her heart, the shadow of your shadow crosses her face, and the echo of your faintest cry becomes a spring and an autumn in her breast. "I've Heard..."
"I've heard fate talked of. It's not a word I use. I think we make our own choices. I think how we live our lives is our own doing, and we cannot fully hope on dreams and stars. But dreams and stars can guide us, perhaps. And the heart's voice is a strong one. Always is. Your heart's voice is your true voice. It is easy to ignore it, for sometimes it says what we'd rather it did not - and it is so hard to risk the things we have. But what life are we living, if we don't live by our hearts? Not a true one. And the person living it is not the true you." - Susan Fletcher

Law and ideology
Jill Goldenziel's posting below is a truly incisive summary of the domestic and international legal issues surrounding the killing of General Suleimani.I am incompetent, professionally speaking, to do anything more than admire the acuity of her analysis. That being said, I think the current discussion, including Prof. Goldenziel's excellent analysis, underscores the extent to which law, with some obvious exceptions, works primarily to legitimize the actions of those in power. Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership spells danger for 1.1 billion women

Help please.... An expat reader has asked me, given how untrustworthy the BBC and Sky News are now, which radio stations I'd recommend as being the least biased. It's a very good question, but I'm too focused on the BBC's output to be able to answer it other than to very tentatively suggest, say, LBC or Talk Radio. Unfortunately, I don't listen to either of those anywhere near enough to say how fair their news output is. It could easily be just as bad (or good). So where should we turn? Can *you *offer any suggestions?

The Poet: Rolf Jacobsen, "When They Sleep"
*"When They Sleep"* "All people are children when they sleep. There's no war in them then. They open their hands and breathe in that quiet rhythm heaven has given them. They pucker their lips like small children and open their hands halfway, soldiers and statesmen, servants and masters. The stars stand guard and a haze veils the sky, a few hours when no one will do anybody harm. If only we could speak to one another then when our hearts are half-open flowers. Words like golden bees would drift in. God, teach me the language of sleep." - Rolf Jacobsen, "The Roads Have Come to an End Now"

David Priess has a superb op-ed in today's Washington Post about the inadequacies of our impeachment process, particularly placing the duty to conduct a trial in the Senate. He canvasses a variety of alternatives (including a national recall election triggered by the House of Representatives.) What is important is that he has now joined the very small list of persons who are actually willing to question the degree to which we're well served by decisions made in 1787 by people operating under decidedly different assumptions about our political system and without our own ability to ... more »

Australia's fires are due to bad forest management and arson not Climate Change
Australia's fires aren't due to Climate Change but to bad forest management policies pushed by leftist "environmentalists". That's the same mistake the Democrats in California have made, albeit there arson isn't so common. Genetically Rescued Organism: A GM Poplar That Produces Less Isoprene But Grows Just As Fast
Poplars have become popular for use in products like paper, pallets, plywood, furniture frames - even as a biofuel - because they grow quickly. But being natural doesn't mean being good for the environment. Poplars are a natural source of isoprene, which negatively affects regional air quality and can lead to higher levels of atmospheric aerosol production, more ozone in the air and longer methane life. Ozone and methane are n the category of greenhouse gases, and ozone is also listed as a respiratory irritant. read more

The Arrogance Of BBC News
When we started Media Lens in 2001, we had a rather naïve expectation that journalists might: a) want to respond rationally to reasoned criticism; and b) have privileged access to unparalleled journalistic resources, experts and arguments that would enable journalists to respond with serious points to our challenges. In particular, we imagined that BBC journalists and editors – being funded from the public licence fee – might actually feel obliged to respond.

The U.S. Army has officially terminated the “Punisher.” The XM25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement System, or “Punisher,” was designed to engage enemy troops behind cover. The Navy's New Destroyer Isn't Ready, Forcing It to Buy More Old Arleigh Burkes
*David Axe* *Security, Americas* [image: Reuters] Not good. *Key point:* The Navy needs destroyers one way or another. The U.S. Navy might not have any choice but to buy more of its venerable *Arleigh Burke*-class destroyers. It’s a risky proposition. Delays in designing a new large surface combatant, or LSC, could compel the fleet to develop yet another version of the *Burke*, which has been in production in a succession of increasingly capable -- and heavy -- variants since the late 1980s. Budgetary pressure and uncertainty about the LSC’s design “are forcing the service to t... more »

*David Axe* *Security, Americas* [image: Reuters] Years in the making. *Key point: *Beijing invested in its submarines over the last few decades to ensure it could hold American carriers at risk. In 1995 and 1996, Taiwanese politicians signaled greater support for declaring their island country officially independent of China. Beijing’s response was swift, forceful … and ultimately an embarrassment to China. The Chinese fired several missiles toward small, Taiwanese-held islands. Why Is America's Navy Shrinking at a Time When It is Needed Most?
*David Axe* *Security, Americas* [image: Reuters] There's trouble afoot. *Key point:* The U.S. is retiring planes faster than it can build new ones. The U.S. Air Force is considering retiring older warplanes in order to save money for new technologies. The idea is that the flying branch eventually would buy new planes including the tech, ultimately restoring the near-term cuts. But there’s a flaw in that plan, the Air Force Association’s Mitchell Institute warned in a December 2019 study entitled “Moving Toward the Air Force We Need? Assessing Air Force Budget Trends.” Cutting ... more »

A Long Twilight Struggle Ends In Twilight
Andrew Bacevich has written an excellent piece in *The Guardian. *It's a coherent explanation of how we got here. The Cold War, he writes, gave Americans meaning, purpose and unity. When it ended, they -- and their country -- got lost: Like the polar ice cap or baseball’s status as the national pastime, [The Cold War] had acquired an appearance of permanence. So its passing caught citizens unaware. Those charged with managing the cold war were, if anything, even more surprised. The enterprise to which they had devoted their professional lives had suddenly vanished. Here was a cont... more »

This and that for your Tuesday reading. - Martin Lukacs writes that the Trudeau Libs' attempts to put a glossier face on politics as usual may be running into a less than compliant public: Not just in Canada, but around the world we have seen the emergence of an airbrushed, focus-grouped avatar liberalism—“yuppie simulacrum of populist breakthrough,” in Perry Anderson’s words—to face the challenge from a democratic-socialist left and an ugly resurgent right. "Although edibles are commonly viewed as a safer and more desirable alternative to smoked or vaped cannabis, physicians and the public should be aware of several risks related to the use of cannabis edibles," write Drs. What Happens if America and Iran Go to War?
*David Axe* *Security, Middle East* Iran has plenty of options for sidestepping American military advantages and striking at weaknesses in U.S. infrastructure. U.S. president Donald Trump on Jan. 2, 2019 ordered the killing of Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps militia and one of the country’s top military leaders. A U.S. Special Operations Command MQ-9 drone fired on a vehicle carrying Soleimani and a deputy militia commander at Baghdad’s international airport, killing both men. War could result.
