To wendle or not to wendle?
The BBC editor in the not-so-hot seat on this week's *Newswatch* was blog favourite Mike Wendling of BBC Trending. I thought it worth transcribing the whole segment as I found it interesting. The subject under discussion was: Is the BBC News website (including BBC Trending) dumbing down? One thing I noted, in passing, was Samira Ahmed seeming to signal her view of one critic's complaint by introducing him as "fulminating". At least she didn't say "frothing at the mouth". As for Mike Wendling, well, I think he put up a pretty good defence of himself and of the need for light as ... more »
The Coronavirus is spreading
This article sums it up well. I have nothing to add except to remind people to use hand sanitizer or wash your hands after touching money or any public surface. The incubation period of up to 2 weeks seems unusually long, so infected people spread it far and wide before they show symptoms.

Washington's 5th congressional district takes up the entire eastern end of the state, from the Canadian border to the Oregon border and right along the Idaho border. The biggest population center is Spokane and most of the votes come from Spokane County, a swing county. The other three counties are Walla Walla, another swing county, Whitman, a blue county and Stevens, a red county. It's a winnable district, although Democrats have been doing badly there in recent years. Obama lost the district both times he ran and Trump crushed Hillary 52.2% to 39.1%. *Stratfor Worldview* *Economics, Americas* [image: Reuters] Prepare for backlash. In the competition to sell arms around the world, the United States and Russia are on a collision course. In the year to come, however, the CAATSA threat might not land the United States all the a... more »
African Americans Take on More Education Debt—And the Payoff Is Complicated
*Jaymes Pyne, Eric Grodsky* *Education, Americas* [image: Reuters] We found that African American graduates with an advanced degree had higher pay increases than their white peers—but not necessarily higher pay. When seeking graduate and professional degrees, African Americans take on over 50% more debt than white students. On the upside, African Americans also see a bigger payoff to earning such degrees. Whether or not that payoff is enough to make up for the additional debt burden is unclear. These are some key takeaways from a study we released in January 2020 in the journal ... more »

"It Is Our Fate..."
"Well, it is our fate to live in a time of crisis. To live in a time when all forms and values are being challenged. In other and more easy times, it was not, perhaps, necessary for the individual to confront himself with a clear question: What is it that you really believe? What is it that you really cherish? What is it for which you might, actually, in a showdown, be willing to die?...I say, with all the reticence which such large, pathetic words evoke, that one cannot exist today as a person – one cannot exist in full consciousness – without having to have a showdown with one’s s... more »
Can We Do It?
Robin Sears wonders if Canadians can come together to fight climate change. He writes: Great social change rarely succeeds as a partisan project. How did we forget that lesson where the climate crisis is concerned? It is not clear when it became a partisan club wielded by progressive activists against “knuckle-dragging” conservatives. It was not true when Margaret Thatcher was an early acid rain pioneer, or when Jean Charest fought for real environmental change at the Rio Summit, or when Brian Mulroney fought hard on CFCs. But sometime around the turn of the century many conserva... more »

India Has Fallen Far Behind China’s Military—Here are Five Affordable Steps It Can Tale to Secure Its Border With China
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, Asia* This could work. Here's how. Since striking a landmark nuclear technology treaty in 2005 with New Delhi, Washington has steadily pursued an alliance with India, including technology transfers, modest but growing arms sales, and military cooperation including a 2016 shared basing agreement. The underlying rationale for that alliance? A desire to buttress India to counterbalance China’s seemingly meteoric rise as an East Asian military superpower. China-India relations never fully recovered from a 1962 war in which Chinese troops seized territor... more »
The U.S. Navy's Littoral Combat Ship: A Successful Catastrophe?

Bush pronounced the overthrow of Saddam Hussein a “catastrophic success,” implying the invasion was an operational triumph in the early going but gave off grave if not debilitating strategic and political fallout later on. It’s the other way around with the littoral combat ship (LCS), a program that has fulfilled little if any of its early pro... more »

These 5 .38 Caliber Guns Are Something Special
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, * They are super shooters. *Key Point:* The .38 Special pops up again and again. The .38 Special is one of the most durable cartridges in history. Introduced in 1898 as the .38 Smith & Wesson Special, it was meant to upgrade the U.S. Army’s firepower. The Army’s .38 Long Colt cartridge proved mediocre at stopping Philippine insurgents in close-quarters combat—the .38 Special was one proposed remedy. Although the Army eventually chose a different caliber (the .45 ACP), .38 Special eventually became one of the most popular cartridges in America. The .38... more »
The Air Force's F-15X: The Ultimate Weapons or Obsolete?
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, * The answer has implications for the F-35. *Key Point:* The worthwhileness of the F-15X concept comes down to whether you believe the Air Force should pay to maintain a lower-tier force of cost-efficient fighters to handle missions that don't require the F-35's special capabilities. The aviation world is abuzz with rumors that the U.S. Air Force is evaluating the purchase of a brand-new F-15X model of the legendary 45-year-old F-15 Eagle twin-engine fighter. Marcus Weisgerber first reported this possibility for Defense One, then expanded upon in an... more »

Free Will and Morality
Free will can be examined in two ways: first, we can examine the freedoms that a man requires to be free of all constraints; second, we can examine the freedoms he requires to be held morally responsible. The first criteria leads to a barbarian conception of man and the second criteria leads to a civilized conception. There is no evidence of the existence of free will, but if it exists, then it must be related to the flow of man’s moral principles. Freedom is good, but over-freedom—or freedom from all moral, social, and religious constraints—has negative consequences; it’s a form of ... more »
