Zelo Street

April 4, 2019 10:35 AM
Not many people know this, as the saying goes, but the first well-known name to threaten legal action against Zelo Street was not the perpetually thirsty Paul Staines (see the aptly named post, A Bully And A Hypocrite, for The Great Guido’s ultimately fruitless attempt to bully me into submission), but right-wing spinner Lynton Crosby, or someone on his behalf. The threat was over the suggestion that Lynt might be fond of playing the race card.

Why did the BBC display such craven cowardice over the Cambridge Analytica scandal? What was behind the ambushing of the Observer’s Carole Cadwalladr by mercenary hack Isabel Oakeshott on The Andy Marr Show™? How did the Beeb end up pushing seriously dodgy items such as the live on-air resignation of a junior shadow minister from Jeremy Corbyn’s team just before Prime Minister’s Questions?

What the Brexit documentary aired by the BBC earlier this week shows is that its political editor Laura Kuenssberg is nothing if not dedicated and hard-working. She displays a strong work ethic. But sometimes it’s a case of, to paraphrase Peter Cook, "her work ethic I like very much. I have nothing against her work ethic. The problem is, neither does she".

In the latest edition of Pointless Politicians, Theresa May once again broadcast to a waiting nation from Downing Street to bring the news that, once more, she hadn’t got a clue what she was doing. Her problem was twofold: one, that the nation was waiting for something else, having tired of her previous appearances on the show, and two, that her latest excuse for doing nothing wasn’t going to wash.

One conclusion that is inescapable from yesterday’s news that pro-Brexit protesters had tried, and failed, to disrupt rail travel at two locations is that to back Britain leaving the EU need not be an intellectually challenging task. As with so much else about those who still harbour delusions of past greatness, the ideas used by the saboteurs were decades out of date. And they could have got themselves killed. Well, maybe next time.

Those out there on the far right like to tell the world that they are hot on child sexual exploitation. To this end, the likes of Stephen Yaxley Lennon, who styles himself Tommy Robinson, rocks up at trials of those accused of such crimes, but only if they are Muslims. Just how selective the far right is when it comes to  CSE has been thrown into sharp contrast after the various trials of Nazi creep Jack Renshaw ended.
April 2, 2019 8:20 AM
The moment that had been urged on YouTube by campaigners, MPs, peers, media people and indeed his many victims has finally arrived for Stephen Yaxley Lennon, who styles himself Tommy Robinson. Twitter had banned him. PayPal had banned him. Most recently, Facebook had banned him, million followers or no. Now YouTube has severely restricted his access and slapped a health warning on his content. But it hasn’t banned him. Yet.

Due to the sterling efforts of the Tweeter known as Mates Jacob (and formerly as Racists 4 Rees Mogg) we have seen the propensity of Tory members to lapse into forthright racism on an all too regular basis. What we have also seen is the occasional instance of anti-Semitism. Now has come an absolutely bang to rights example of Tory anti-Semitism, and yet there has been no press interest whatsoever.
( What with the constant Israeli promotion of criticism of their policies as anti-semitism, you have to wonder if the label retains its cachet )

Bob Stewart, formerly a Colonel in the British Army and United Nations commander in Bosnia, and Tory MP for Beckenham since 2010, is no stranger to controversy, not least because it was he who described Spectator assistant editor Isabel Hardman as “the totty”. The infamous spreadsheet detailing the behavioural peccadillos of some Tory MP said of him “Permanently intoxicated and very inappropriate with women”.

After Gisela Stuart appeared before the host’s inquisition on The Andy Marr Show™ yesterday to excuse Vote Leave’s lawbreaking in the run-up to the 2016 EU referendum, the perpetually thirsty Paul Staines and his rabble at the Guido Fawkes blog were quick to fire up the spin machine, telling readers “Gisela Stuart Reminds Remain That They Spent Far More Money”. Maybe they were a little too quick.

Eyebrows were raised in Summer 2013 when Jacob Rees Mogg, the Honourable member for times long past, was discovered to have been the guest of honour at a gathering of the Traditional Britain Group. He had been warned about attending, but TBG had dismissed the warnings as a “smear”. Rees Mogg checked with CCHQ, “who had no knowledge of the group that they could give me”. This was disingenuous claptrap.

After all the adverse comment, and a slew of resignations, following Adolf von Batten’s decision to appoint Stephen Yaxley Lennon, who styles himself Tommy Robinson, as advisor to the party, it might have been thought that those still drifting around the planet UKIP would be steering well clear of anyone else tainted by actual or even alleged criminality. But that thought would have been misplaced, as last Friday’s events show.

To the BBC’s credit, at least this morning’s edition of The Andy Marr Show™ tackled the issue of Vote Leave spending around £675,000 more than they were legally allowed to during the EU referendum campaign. To this end, VL’s former campaign committee chair Gisela Stuart was subjected to a little light grilling by the host (Michael “Oiky” Gove and Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson were, sadly, attending another hair appointment).

During 2010, former US Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin, via her Political Action Committee, went after several Democrat Representatives over their advocacy for Barack Obama’s health care reforms. To promote this campaign, SarahPAC put out a graphic, telling “20 House Democrats from districts we carried in 2008 voted for the Health Care Bill  … IT’S TIME TO TAKE A STAND”. The “targets” were picked out with gunsight crosshairs.

As the BBC has reported, “MP and former Attorney General Dominic Grieve has lost a vote of no-confidence by local Conservatives … It followed a ‘robust discussion’ about Brexit by party association members in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire … Opposition to him is reported to have been organised by a former UKIP candidate”. A former UKIP stalwart who ran against Grieve in 2017 and has rejoined the Tories.

Journalist and filmmaker Edward Lawrence was happy to report last night that the documentary he had been working on recently was a wrap. “It's 12.30am on the 30th March, an hour and a half after we're supposed to have left the EU … IT’S A WRAP!!! Thanks @bbclaurak for the past 9 months. The Brexit Storm airs Monday 9pm on BBC Two. #brexit”. A smiling Laura Kuenssberg was at front of shot.

As yesterday drew to a close, central London was turned into what looked like the aftermath of a particularly unpleasant far-right rally. That is probably because it was the aftermath of a particularly unpleasant far-right rally. Police officers were roundly abused, and so were journalists. Those stoking the paranoia that led their followers to behave that way remained silent about it. Which really wasn’t good enough.

[Update at end of post]

After the campaign calling itself Stop Funding Fake News came to wider attention through the advocacy of Countdown numbers person Rachel Riley, the questions about it came thick and fast. Not least of these was to ask why SFFN was smearing websites like The Canary and Evolve Politics as Fake News and clamouring to have advertisers abandon them, rather than work with Impress, which regulates their output.
March 29, 2019 6:44 AM
With at least 30 Tories, principally those in the ERG, as well as the 10 DUP representatives, committed to opposing Theresa May’s Brexit deal, it looks like it will be Third Time Unlucky for the PM as she makes that one last push to get the deal over the line. Desperation is in the air, and nowhere more so than with the Europhobic part of our free and fearless press, which is also in Last Push Mode.
March 29, 2019 5:06 AM
And so arrives the day on which the UK was intended to leave the European Union. All that false hope*, all the column inches, all the hot air has so far been in vain. Brexit has become the latest of Theresa May’s cans to be kicked down the road. To register their disappointment, the far right has decided to congregate in London this afternoon - but in what appears to be four separate gatherings. The potential for disorder is high.
*False hope ? I see elsewhere a legal opinion from the courts may be sought on that.
March 28, 2019 10:20 AM
Once more, the perpetually thirsty Paul Staines and his rabble at the Guido Fawkes blog have been diverting attention from the Tories’ increasing problems with racism in their ranks - not only Islamophobia, but other forms of racism, including anti-Semitism too - by kicking Labour. And as so often with the Fawkes folks, the careful use of language shows that the claim being made about The Red Team is not supported by the evidence.
March 28, 2019 6:16 AM
A new campaigning website has recently appeared, called Stop Funding Fake News. It claims to be inspired by Sleeping Giants in the USA, but those who contribute to it remain anonymous. It is also supported very enthusiastically by Countdown numbers person Rachel Riley, whose antipathy for anyone and anything she can link to the Labour Party leadership - as she mistakenly accuses it of being anti-Semitic - is well known.
So it should come as not surprise that the SFFN website shows, as examples of what it alleged to be Fake News, not only Arron Banks’ Westmonster site, and Politicalite, which backs the likes of Stephen Yaxley Lennon, who styles himself Tommy Robinson, but also The Canary and Evolve Politics. Which are both Impress regulated.
Thus the problem with what SFFN, cheered on by Ms Riley and others, are doing. Trying to damage regulated media outlets at the behest of those who disagree with opinions posted there is entering dangerous territory.

He gave the Daily Mail the exclusive the paper had craved in its unwavering support for Theresa May and her albatross-like Brexit deal: Jacob Rees Mogg was going to hold his nose and back his Prime Minister when the deal came back for yet another vote. The only problem for the inmates of the Northcliffe House bunker is that Rees Mogg had given himself a get-out clause that he knew meant his gesture was meaningless.
March 27, 2019 10:57 AM
After Darren Osborne drove his van into a crowd outside Finsbury Park Mosque, killing one and injuring several more, Stephen Yaxley Lennon, who styles himself Tommy Robinson, vehemently denied that he had influenced the killer. Osborne might have received messages from Lennon’s campaigning against Muslims, but as far as Lennon was concerned, he wasn’t the one Wot Done It.
