Mexico-U.S. Election Comparisons-- Here Decapitated Bodies Are Not Being Hung Off Of Highway Bridges (Yet)

The *New Yorker* and *The Atlantic* are doing some of the best political work I have seen and encourage you to follow them closely. The main point I want to stress is that looking at this solely through the prism, that the U.S. media is pushing, of this being something that can be boiled down to a validation of Bernie Sanders' populism or a larger Mexican response to Trump, is extremely misguided. This was a very Mexican so... more »

The Political Economy of Freedom of Speech in the Second Gilded Age
We are now well into America’s Second Gilded Age. The First Gilded Age was the era of industrial capitalism that begins in the 1870s and 1880s and continued through the first years of the 20th century, ultimately giving way to the reforms of the Progressive Era. The First Gilded Age produced huge fortunes, political corruption, and vast inequalities of wealth, so much so that people became concerned that they would endanger American democracy. The Second Gilded Age begins, more or less, with the beginning of the digital revolution in the mid-1980s, but it really takes off in the ear... more »

QotD: On the anti-reason corruption of science
*There is a limit to how far [scientists] can stray when you are forced to face the results of observations or experiments that give clear answers. So sciences that are closest to reality—-to definitive, objective tests of its theories and claims—-are the most resilient. Or if nobody is trying to impose an agenda beyond the truth, you are reasonably safe just following the clues where they lead.** Physics is a good example. Experimental physics is one of the most rigorous sciences, and the facts rule. Yet speculative theoretical physics is often unbounded by even the possibilit... more »

Watch and laugh as this bear enjoys a relaxing summer afternoon
Mark Hough had barely taken a sip of his Friday afternoon margarita when he heard twigs snapping and leaves rustling in his lush Altadena, California, backyard. At first he brushed it off as the sounds of his neighbor pottering next door, but the noise grew louder. “So I got up, looked over in the bushes and lo and behold there’s a bear climbing up over my fence,” Hough said Monday. The sighting was the first of many encounters Hough would have with the bear that particularly hot Friday afternoon — over the course of a few hours the bear availed itself of Hough’s backyard, his ho... more »

Don’t Let Trump Be The Only One Seen Hugging An American Flag This Fourth Of July
Fewer Americans than ever are willing to express their unrequited devotion to the United States, and yet, on Independence Day, that is exactly what we as Americans must do. We cannot let President Donald Trump be the only one who bear hugs Old Glory. Fourth of July Terror Plot foiled - by the same corrupt agency that put the would-be patsy up to it
*Would-be Fourth of July* *Terror Patsy Demetrius Pitts* Happy Fourth of July to my American readers and friends...particularly the intrepid American truth bloggers who blog perilously from Ground Zero of the War Against Truth and Justice. Speaking of which...I have a photo of yet another victim of that war posted above. This is a man by the name of Demetrius Pitts who was recently arrested on the spurious charges of planning a terror event to take place in Cleveland, Ohio on July 4th, 2018. The problem with this arrest is that Mr. Pitts and his crime fit a well worn and traverse... more »

Ukraine's Close Ties To China Is Another Reason Why NATO Should Be Hesitant In Admitting Kiev Into The Organization
© Photo : Press service of the Ukrainian president *SCMP*:* Ukraine’s path to Nato complicated by close ties to China* Kiev passed a new law that aims to push the country closer to Europe and Nato membership. But are deepening ties with Beijing – Moscow’s close military ally – pulling the country in a different direction? Solutions for those 'left behind' in small town America
For Independence Day, I'm about to talk about small town America, the tragic/hurtful fix they are in... and some possible solutions. Though I'll finish with some fierce political commentary on the stated intention of Donald Trump to meet privately with Vladimir Putin, without any U.S. officials or other parties present. *== Are small towns the soul of America? Well, then save them… right ==* First a telling statistic: there was a clear overlap between counties that had high opioid use ... and the vote for Donald Trump. After correcting for demographic variables such as age and r... more »

ICHEP And Me
The ICHEP conference opened today in Seoul. This is the most well-attended conference in particle physics around, with usually over 1000 participants. The week-long event dictates the deadline of particle physics and astrophysics experiments around, as every collaboration wants to show updated results of their searches and measurements in that venue, to have a share of the spotlights. This means that you can bet the month of June was a hectic one for ATLAS and CMS collaborators alike (but also those of LHCb and ALICE, just to mention the main four CERN endeavours). read more
'Curiouser and Curiouser': Salisbury, the Skripals & the Epic Failure of the British Fairy Tale
[image: undefined] "Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast" – Alice in Wonderland. The problem for the British narrative in the Skripal case is that one would have to believe way more than six things. Let me start with the latest: the taxpayer-funded purchase for more than one million pounds of the homes in Salisbury of the British spy Sergei Skripal and the police officer Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey. This purchase is explained as necessary on security grounds and – some suspect – may be followed by the destruction of both houses and all th... more »
