Hunter Gatherers Baked Their Own Bread 14,000 Years Ago - 4,000 Years Before Agriculture
Some 4,000 years before domesticated agriculture, hunter-gatherers baked their own bread, according to a discovery at an archaeological site in northeastern Jordan. Researchers have discovered the charred remains of a flatbread baked around 14,400 years ago, the oldest direct evidence of bread found to date, predating the advent of agriculture by at least 4,000 years. The findings suggest that bread production based on wild cereals may have encouraged hunter-gatherers to cultivate cereals, and thus contributed to the agricultural revolution in the Neolithic period. read more

What Are the Legal Pathways for Central Americans to Enter the U.S.?
The conventional wisdom about immigration suggests that the migrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border are cheating the system, “skipping the line” or otherwise blatantly breaking the rules. The United States is a country of laws, the thinking goes, and hopeful migrants should not be allowed to enter unless they do so legally. But what are these legal options? We decided to try to answer this question by looking at the categories for visas to the United States and the availability of these options for the 162,000 Central Americans who arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border in the past... more »
The Space Force Should Improve the Cybersecurity of Space Assets
President Trump offered his support last month for the creation of a Space Force within the U.S. military. In a paper released last week, my Harvard colleague Greg Falco argues that one of the first missions for this new force should be to improve the cybersecurity of space assets. This proposal is worthy of deep consideration as the cybersecurity of space assets remains a top, if underexamined, priority for national security, and the opportunity to shape the roles and missions of a new Space Force will soon pass. Falco does not hype the threat, but his assessment of the risks ar... more »

It was not a throwaway remark. President Trump took up the point yet again at the Helsinki press conference on Monday with an attack on the special counsel’s probe as “ridicu... more »

Emperor Napoleon welomes Tsar Alexander to the floating pavilion on the Neman near Tilsit, 25 June 1807. Via Wikimedia Commons. They're not supposed to judge! But they can't even allow themselves to consider what kind of crime we'd be talking about with any specificity, and this leads to a kind of sentimental muddling of the story, as in this report from The Times: “You have been watching,” sai... more »

Maladaptation to bogus climate change
People seem to think that adaptation to climate change is a free good. Some people tout it as a "no regrets" alternative to questionable mitigation efforts such as decarbonization. It is certainly not free and if the projected changes fail to occur it can easily be very bad.

Abandoned art
Artist (at the Rhein Center, Lakeside, OH) Bev Beatty is leaving small pieces of art around our little community called “abandoned art.” Whoever finds them can keep them, or leave them for someone else to find. Today at the Wellness Center I noticed something on the window sill and thought someone had forgotten something. Then I noticed the note inside that it was abandoned art just for me to find or leave as is. It’s a tiny Christmas tree in blue, pink and taupe, just the colors of our cottage, so of course, I brought it home for the fireplace mantel. [image: Abandoned art 20... more »

I do not like to use the word wrong. The majority of studies are always flawed in terms of small sample sizes. What the study can produce is an indication that needs to be noted as plausible. Out of Tesla's stock price, $300 is due to Musk's silly PC clichés & government's distortion of markets
I think that most people who seriously trade stocks (or invest into stocks) will agree that they are usually trying to estimate the fair or sustainable price of their stocks with the precision that is finer than 10%. Serious investors estimate the earnings with a similar accuracy and think hard whether P/E (the price-to-earning ratio) should be 10 or 20 and what could affect it. At the end, the stock price should be equal to the mean value of discounted life-long profits that the company will generate. So investing isn't quite a high-precision physical science but it is clearly about... more »
