Sea Level Rise Threatens UK Coastal Wetlands By 2100
A new analysis estimates that if greenhouse gas emissions continue unabated, sea-level rise will endanger coastal wetlands across the United Kingdom. That conclusion was derived by estimating salt-marsh vulnerability using the geological record of past losses in response to sea-level change. Data from 800 salt-marsh soil cores showed that rising sea levels in the past led to increased waterlogging of the salt marshes in the region, killing the vegetation that protects them from erosion. read more

On the Purpose of NATO & the Cost of European Defense
[image: undefined] The anxiety leading up to this week’s NATO summit is unusually intense, thanks in large part to President Trump’s fractious relationship with European allies. Donald Trump Protests: What's the Point?
Is there a point? Among those for whom Donald Trump is a pretty repulsive figure, then the answer is obvious. Simultaneously for the minority who don't think antagonising Trump, a man with a notoriously fragile ego along with a dainty set of hands, is a good idea then no, there shouldn't be any protesting. If you don't respect the man then at least respect the office, so goes the argument. And then there are the somewheres-in-the-middle who greet his "working" visit to the UK with indifference, or can't see any point in taking to the streets. Well, the protesters are right and the ... more »

People Expect The New EPA Administrator To Be Less Incompetent And Distracted Than Pruitt-- And That's Not A Good Thing
*Worse than Pruitt?* Yesterday, the *New York Times* reported that "Scott Pruitt’s brief, tumultuous tenure as the head of the EPA has left him disgraced in the eyes of many in Washington and across the country. But it may not have done him much harm in his home state. Though a comeback for Mr. Pruitt is far from assured, some liberals and conservatives in Oklahoma agree he could engineer one in this oil- and gas-dependent state where he used to be attorney general. His hard-line anti-regulatory message remains popular here, and many of his supporters consider the spreading plume of... more »

Climate Alarmists have about as Much Credibility as Peter Strzok

July 12: Lots of news. Little sense of its meaning.
I hurried back from the shore to find the irving press its usual self. It had a big story of course on the 12 boys in Thailand who were saved from a cave. Okay. It's an emotional story. But there is still no reporting of the hundreds of thousands (at least) of civilians including many, many thousands of children who are being deliberately starved to death by the U.S. and Saudi Arabia. So who gives a damn? Right? I was also struck by a typical irving press commentary from a propaganda house for billionaires - The Frontier Centre for Public Policy. One of the most frustrating aspects of the genetically modified food controversy is the complete lack of an open, intellectually honest debate on the topic, which happens to be a pretty important one. After all, the introduction of genetically engineered foods in the mid-1990s represented the single biggest change to our food system in decades, and it was all done under the veil of secrecy — these lab-created, gene-spliced foods were never labeled, and more than 20 years later consumers are still being kept in the dark. Universities everywhere have become pawns in this game, acc... more »

WHAT WE DID: Time passes quickly up there in the mountains?
*THURSDAY, JULY 12, 2018Part 4—Bob Dylan, turned on his ear:* "Times passes slowly up here in the mountains." So Bob Dylan improbably claimed in the song, Times Passes Slowly, on his 1970 album, New Morning. In our view, the album describes the unexpected discovery of personal happiness in married life and fatherhood. Election Recount In Iraq Going Badly Politically
In May 2018 Iraq held its latest election for parliament. Immediately afterward there were various charges of fraud. The loudest came from the Kurdish opposition, the Turkmen Front and Arab Alliance that accusedthe Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) of cheating in Kirkuk and Sulaymaniya. These complaints and others led parliament to amend the election law at the start of June to order a recount of the ballots. This process is roughly half way finished, yet there are still parties that are not satisfied and the controversy over the results continues. The recount started first in ... more »
