China Trade
by Reese Erlich When I first reported from China in 1980, bicycles outnumbered cars on Beijing's major streets, and the tallest building in town was a 25-story hotel. I visited a small village that had one black and white TV, which everyone watched at night. Today China's major cities are jammed with modern factories, skyscrapers, and large public transportation networks. The Chinese government's "socialist market economy" led to unprecedented prosperity, as well as massive corruption and intensified class divisions. China now has the second largest economy in the world after the... more »

Russia Is Not the Soviet Union
*Ted Galen Carpenter* *Security, Europe* [image: A participant wears a sticker with the word] Today's Russia is weak and not an existential threat. The messianic, superpower of the USSR was. The American public and U.S. policymakers both have an unfortunate tendency to conflate Russia with the Soviet Union. That habit emerged again with the media and political reaction to the Helsinki summit between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump’s critics accused him of appeasing Putin and even of committing treason for not doing enough to defend American interests a... more »

The Poet: Robert Frost, "Into My Own"
*"Into My Own"* "One of my wishes is that those dark trees, So old and firm they scarcely show the breeze, Were not, as ’twere, the merest mask of gloom, But stretched away unto the edge of doom. I should not be withheld but that some day Into their vastness I should steal away, Fearless of ever finding open land, Or highway where the slow wheel pours the sand. I do not see why I should e’er turn back, Or those should not set forth upon my track To overtake me, who should miss me here And long to know if still I held them dear. They would not find me changed from him ... more »

"This Is My Wish For You..."
"This is my wish for you: Comfort on difficult days, smiles when sadness intrudes, rainbows to follow the clouds, laughter to kiss your lips, sunsets to warm your heart, hugs when spirits sag, beauty for your eyes to see, friendships to brighten your being, faith so that you can believe, confidence for when you doubt, courage to know yourself, patience to accept the truth, love to complete your life." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
"Very Much Afraid..."
"In ordinary times we get along surprisingly well, on the whole, without ever discovering what our faith really is. If, now and again, this remote and academic problem is so unmannerly as to thrust its way into our minds, there are plenty of things we can do to drive the intruder away. We can get the car out or go to a party or to the cinema or read a detective story or have a row with a district council or write a letter to the papers about the habits of the nightjar or Shakespeare's use of nautical metaphor. Thus we build up a defense mechanism against self-questioning because, to... more »

US Maximalist Stance on Denuclearization Holds Korean Peace Process Hostage

How Would the U.S. Military Have Waged War Without the Tomahawk Missile?
*Robert Farley* *Security, * [image: Flickr] A story of how this could have happened--and what would have followed. For the past three decades, America’s signature weapon of war has been the Tomahawk Land Attack Missile, or TLAM. The TLAM has helped bust down the doors of air-defense networks from Iraq to Libya, and has become a favorite tool of political influence for several presidents. But what if the TLAM had never existed, or at least not in the form that we have grown accustomed to? What if the United States had given up the TLAM in arms control negotiations with the USSR... more »
Pearl Harbor Avenged: How America Sunk the Japanese Imperial Navy Once and For All
*Warfare History Network, Christopher Miskimon* *Security, Asia* [image: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_battleship_Yamato#/media/File:Yamato_Trial_1941.jpg] The naval combat that raged around the Philippines invasion was preceded by a game of reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, and planning. The Japanese superbattleship Musashi was steaming east along with a fleet of other battleships, cruisers, and destroyers on their way toward what was expected to be a climactic battle at Leyte Gulf. At 8:10 am on October 24, 1944, Musashi’s captain ordered the crew to battle stati... more »
How to Push Back Against Russia: The Trump Administration Must Revitalize NATO’s Nukes
*Dan Goure* *Security, Europe* NATO and the U.S. must accept as an absolute priority the need to recreate a solid, credible and capable escalation ladder with clearly delineated and identifiable capabilities are available for each rung. *Zachary Keck* *Security, China* [image: Flickr] Beijing is developing large, smart and relatively low-cost unmanned submarines that can roam the world’s oceans—and target the U.S. Navy. China may soon have a new weapon to help defend itself against enemy submarines. For years, many have commented on Beijing’s lack of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities. The Department of Defense’s 2016 report on China’s military, for instance, noted that Beijing “continues to lack either a robust coastal or deep-water anti-submarine warfare capability.” This was not a major problem when ... more »
How China Got Its Hands On Its First Aircraft Carrier
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, * Truly a story like no other. *In March 2002, the carrier finally arrived at the port of Dalian in Liaoning province, which would lend the carrier its name in Chinese service. Three years later, it was put into a dry dock to allow for an extensive refit process, including sandblasting away all the rust and restoring and installing the engines in 2011.* China was proud to launch its first aircraft carrier, the *Liaoning, *in 2012. This vessel was a refit of an incomplete Soviet Kuznetsov-class cruiser carrier. However, the story of how China got th... more »
Obama Administration Funded al-Qaida Front
[image: obama-administration-funded-al-qaida-front] The Obama Administration OK’d a $200,000 grant to a terrorist front with the help of World Vision, the Christian evangelical aid organization. And at least $115,000 of it actually went to the terror group.
