"For Nothing Is Fixed..."

noreply@blogger.com (Coyote Prime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 13 minutes ago
"For nothing is fixed, forever and forever and forever, it is not fixed; the earth is always shifting, the light is always changing, the sea does not cease to grind down rock. Generations do not cease to be born, and we are responsible to them because we are the only witnesses they have. The sea rises, the light fails, lovers cling to each other, and children cling to us. The moment we cease to hold each other, the sea engulfs us and the light goes out." - James Baldwin

“What is Going On?”

*“What is Going On?”* by David Stansfield “We have now reached the point in our story where we no longer know what is going on. Moore’s law still reigns supreme over the technological playground, but it appears that our toys have outgrown us – or are very, very close to doing so. Each prediction about what this will mean for the human race is wilder than the next. The wildest prophecies of all cluster around a concept known as “the singularity.” Now there’s a word. Something to do with single, with singleness, oneness, with one or perhaps, The One. All of that and more is wrapped u... more »

No crust no pie

No one made a better pie than my mother. But I used to be good too, and was often asked to bring one to a family get together or church pitch-in. THERE ARE REASONS TO WORRY ABOUT 2020

I think Paul Campos is right: Trump has a very good chance of getting re-elected, by which I mean the probability of that happening is high enough that it should be considered its own independent ongoing crisis, that should be a non-stop focus of efforts to stop it from happening. As Campos notes, "Since the days of Grover Cleveland, only once has a party won the White House and not held it for at least eight years" (the Democrats lost the 1980 election after barely winning the 1976 election). That's a reminder that even if Trump is driven from office, a substitute GOP nominee coul... more »

Russia and China Could Stop America from Controlling the Seas in a War

Lest we forget *what*?

I grow increasingly uneasy every year with the growing laudation of Anzac Day. Lest we forget, it is said, every year, with increasing vehemence. But what exactly is it we should be remembering, and are earnestely entreated not to forget? In my own lifetime, the remembrance seems to have morphed from the birth of a nation and the bungling of generals to one in which the twin themes of duty and blood sacrifice have come to thoroughly permeate the day. Is it just the proximity to Easter that allows that commemoration's central theme to bleed so strongly into this one, I wonder? But ... more »

China Is Building Another Aircraft Carrier (and It Could Be a Game Changer)

Asia Times at The National Interest - 10 hours ago
*Asia Times* *Security, Asia* The planned carrier is bigger and features aircraft launch pads—some of which could be powered by electromagnetic motors. *Despite having similar steam turbo engines, the new carrier will do away with the curled-up bow as aircraft will be catapulted from launch pads, although it remains to be seen if the novel electromagnetic system which the Chinese military has been testing for years will be put into use on the carrier.* While China is readying its first home-built aircraft carrier – now doing sea trials in the Bohai Sea – for delivery to the navy... more »

Will it make the irving press on April 24? I doubt it very much. Now, if this had been a report of Syrians killing children, and if it came from a collection of liars called White Berets, it would have made every western paper. But this one isn't likely to. It's now April 25 and, as expected, this story did not make the ... more »

KEVIN WILLIAMSON, STOP DIGGING

Steve M. at No More Mister Nice Blog - 11 hours ago
In his recent *Wall Street Journal* piece about his dismissal by *The Atlantic,* Kevin Williamson complained that no journalist ever asked him to explain his position on the proper penalty for abortion in a hypothetical America in which abortion was criminalized. So *New York* magazine's Ed Kilgore asked him, twice -- and never got a straight answer, only some high-toned libs-are-evil invective, along these lines: People on the pro-choice side seek to shift the conversation to the question of the specifics of criminal sanction for obvious and shallow rhetorical purposes — because th... more »

Nigel Cameron at Blog Posts – Page Array – UnHerd - 11 hours ago
In a fascinating ruling, the US Ninth Circuit has ruled in the case of the monkey who took a selfie. Naruto, a macaque from Indonesia, did not bring the case himself. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), the radical animal-rights organisation, acted on his behalf. Although the Ninth Circuit is know for its liberal views, […] The post The strange case of the monkey selfie appeared first on UnHerd.
