Anti-tether hysteria and low speed of deflation of cryptobubble
*Two proofs of a low IQ of the cryptocurrency "investors"* The first TRF blog post that contains the word "Bitcoin" was posted in November 2013 and the title said Bitcoin will probably keep on skyrocketing. Superficially, that title looks like an amazing prophesy today but the devil is in the details. If you had wanted to use my "precious prophesy" to become wealthy, you needed lots of patience. The Bitcoin was worth $1,000 when I wrote that blog post and it would decrease up to the bottom near $200 or so in 2015. (The drop was mostly due to the collapsed Mt Gox cryptocurrency exc... more »

*Roadside sign in Cape Town, South Africa, from February 2017 (source)* *by Gaius Publius* In Cape Town, South Africa, they're calling it the day the water taps could be turned off. They're also calling it, not an impending crisis, but a "deep deep deep" crisis now. It's also a vision, perhaps, of the future of California and the American Southwest. Is it time yet to take this matter seriously? Or is the writing on the wall not yet visible enough for people to rebel against their political leaders and act? The drama is unfolding before us, with South Africa leading the way. *Cap... more »

BREAKING: Todd seems or pretends to question Priebus!
*MONDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2018Actually fails to do so:* Back in June 2017, did Donald J. Trump order Don McGahn to fire Robert Mueller? In the past two weeks, the New York Times and the Washington Post have each reported that he did. Each paper reported that McGahn then told "White House officials" or "West Wing staff" that he would resign before he would comply with that order. Did those events actually happen? On yesterday morning's Meet the Press, Chuck Todd's first guest was Reince Priebus, Trump's chief of staff at that time. Almost surely, Priebu would have known if these event... more »

Disinformation, Neocon-Style
It's deja vu all over again. When you look closely at the pushback against the Nunes memo exposing the alleged misuse of the secret FISA Court for political gain or revenge, you begin to see a pattern and a formula. The propagation of anti-Russian fever is weirdly reminiscent of the run-up to the US invasion of Iraq. That Vladimir Putin is "hacking" our crumbling democracy is as much an article of faith as Saddam Hussein's cache of weapons of mass destruction. The methods by which this faith is being propagated to the American public become especially obvious when you notice that s... more »
Federal Court Ends Extraditions Hurting Anti-Corruption Effort
February 4, 2018, Iraq’s Federal Supreme Court ruled that extraditions were unconstitutional. It cited Article 21 of the constitution which states that Iraqis could not be extradited by foreign authorities. This ends efforts by Baghdad to get corrupt officials deported from other countries back to Iraq for their corrupt practices. Recently, former Trade Minister Abdul Falah al-Sudani was extradited by Lebanon. He was found guilty in absentia after he fled Iraq. It also triedto do the same thing to ex-Defense Minister Ziad al-Qattan. Now that effort is over. High ranking Iraqi officia... more »

Guilty Plea Not Always Leading to Mitigation of Sentence
R. v. F.H.L., 2018 ONCA 83: [22] A plea of guilt does not entitle an offender to a set standard of mitigation. The amount of credit a guilty plea attracts will vary in each case. In R. v. Faulds (1994), 1994 CanLII 770 (ON CA), 20 O.R. *If more money was diverted to school choice efforts, our education system would necessarily be upended* Columnist Star Parker wrote recently on this issue and the urgency of school reform amidst horrible proficiency statistics. As Parker notes, America’s financial contribution to education is second to none. Yet none of that additional investment is evident in overall grades. Students here rank 23, 25 and 40 globally when it comes to reading, science and math, respectively. Moreover, she writes, “In the case of our black children, the results are dismal. Kant’s View of Hume’s Argument
Immanuel Kant saw David Hume as an ally or predecessor than an adversary. In his published works Kant has constantly emphasized the importance of Hume. He has said that Hume had interrupted his dogmatic slumber. In his *Critique of Pure Reason* he confesses that he is pursuing a line of thought that Hume has originally proposed but has failed to fully develop. In his book *Kant: A Biography* (Chapter: "“All-Crushing” Critic of Metaphysics"), Manfred Kuhen gives a description of Kant’s view of the argument that Hume is offering. Kant believed that Hume’s argument consists of the fol... more »

*Greens are sexual harassers too* *News from Australia's Green Party* A young Greens volunteer was sexually assaulted in Canberra. That’s scandalous enough, but the party’s response to the assault has added to the injury. Former Greens candidate Christina Hobbs weighs into the debate, in response to a staggering OpEd by party founder Bob Brown. The Grotesque Chaos of Claire Kober’s Haringey
*Guest post from David Osland* The resignation of a council leader would normally be no biggie. I mean, I’m guessing entirely here, but presumably that happens in towns or cities across Britain several times a year, for one reason or another. These things usually merit a run of front pages in the local press, and perhaps a short mention or two nationally. They are then swiftly forgotten, as just another ego-driven municipal hissy fit over a bypass or an over-budget leisure centre. All of that makes the events surrounding Claire Kober’s departure in Haringey simply extraordinary. ... more »
